It is often said that the high school period is one of the most important stages that an individual will experience, and is often seen as a critical and life-shaping time. During this period, people often begin to discover what is meaningful to them and how they plan to continue living their lives. Volunteering at St. Clare’s Hospital has helped me form a positive experience during my high school years.
When I first began volunteering, I was very nervous about meeting new people and being pushed outside of my comfort zone. At the beginning of my volunteering experience, I was rather timid and not very outgoing. Fortunately, as time went by, I discovered how to introduce myself to new volunteers, to go out of my way to make patients feel welcome, and to extend the hand of friendship to others. I learned to respect diversity, which turned out to be particularly helpful in the real world.
My volunteering experience at the hospital has led me to believe that my love and sympathy for the disabled can brighten up the day of those lonely patients. There is another valuable lesson I have learned from the volunteer program: The significance of “service” involves making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the harmony of the community. Now I feel content each time I finish my shift. This positive feeling has motivated me to continue carrying on this worthwhile cause, and has become something that I view as having irreplaceable importance to my life.
It’s a great pity that many teenagers in my generation have not had experiences similar to mine and therefore missed out on some of the important lessons that can be learned in life. Knowing that I made a positive impact on someone is an emotionally uplifting experience that can never be matched by money or fame. And, to the best of my ability, I will follow this path of service throughout my life.
4. What does the author think of the high school period?

B. The author’s changes brought about by volunteering
C. Friendship between volunteers and patients.
D. Ways to help and respect patients.
6. What does the underlined word “timid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Confident. B. Shy. C. Brave. D. Calm.
7. What is the purpose of the text?

B. To share the author’s volunteering experience.
C. To explain the benefits of volunteering.
D. To introduce suitable community work.

Anxiety isn’t funny. When we feel worried or afraid, the last thing we feel like doing is laughing. Finding humor can be difficult when we live with anxiety. However, if we begin to look for humor, we can find that laughter can be a great coping skill.
Researchers have discovered that laughter has many benefits. Among the ways laughter lifts us by increasing our overall well-being and boosting our mental health. When we live with anxiety, our stress hormones pulse through us. This makes us feel tense and anxious. Although there are no quick solutions for anything in our life, a good laugh can instantly begin to reduce these harmful stress hormones that are mixed with anxiety. Laughter gets to work immediately, and a regular “diet” of laughter continues to decrease anxiety over time.
The act of laughing is similar to deep breathing in its ability to increase the oxygen in our bodies. Combined with reducing stress hormones, the increased oxygen in our bodies helps lead to muscle relaxation. All of this helps reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety.
Laughing feels good. It’s addictive and we can keep wanting more. When we laugh regularly, our anxiety begins to decrease. When we have humor and give ourselves a chance to laugh a little bit for even a short while each day, we distract our focus. Rather than seeing the world within or without as a worrying place, we start to see it as a good, safe, and perhaps even fun place. We start to see beyond the anxiety. Sure, the anxiety lingers (徘徊) for a while, but every time we laugh, we can reduce it.
Introducing intentional laughter into our life decreases our stress hormones. Breathing deeply during the act of laughing relaxes muscles. Thinking about something funny shifts our focus to new things. Having humor regularly helps our outlook become more positive.
8. What can make us feel nervous?
A. Pulsing stress hormones. B. Lacking sense of humour.
C. Tiredness and sleepiness. D. Feeling eager to get something.
9. Why is deep breathing mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To compare it with taking exercice. B. To suggest people do it more often.
C. To show its importance to the body. D. To explain how laughing reduces anxiety.
10. What does Paragraph 4 focus on in terms of laughter?
A. Its functions. B. Its concept. C. Its causes. D. Its disadvantages.
11. Who might need to read the text most?
A. A person who has developed a bad habit. B. A person who tends to feel nervous easily.
C. A person who is fond of humorous stories. D. A person who can’t get along well with others.
D
Thanks to technology development, healthcare services are more accessible than ever. Hospitals have committed to digitally enabled care going mainstream and more health services have gone online than ever before. But are older people who don’t use the Internet being left behind?
A study by Lancaster University found that lots of older people still avoid online life completely or use the Internet only on occasion. There are various reasons why older people don’t use the Internet. For many, a lack of confidence in their own ability to use technology raised fears about security, particularly with online banking.
Whatever the reasons are, one of the biggest concerns about an off line older generation is the likelihood that online. Madeleine Starr MBE, director of business development and innovation at Carers UK, said, “Though many of us use technology in our everyday lives, seven out of ten people don’t yet think of technology when it comes to caring. So, many are not yet realizing the benefits of this technology. Accessing appointments, ordering prescriptions (处方) or having consultations online can all help reduce visits to doctors and unplanned hospital visits.”
In an aging society, the Internet can make a huge amount of difference to older people requiring a bit of extra support and those caring for them. “Advice from specialist websites or symptom checkers is great for those who are unsure if their symptoms are cause for concern or find it difficult to get to a doctor’s appointment. Technology is making it easier to offer remote care and support for older people, helping them remain independent. The information on the Internet can prevent older people from taking their health into their own hands,” adds Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK.
However, services need to remain accessible to those who aren’t online. While it’s fine to support older people getting online, those who choose not to or cannot do so, for whatever reason, should not be treated like second-class citizens. They must still be able to access services in other ways that suit them.
12. What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To raise a topic to be discussed. B. To list some important facts.
C. To express the main idea of the text. D. To introduce new advances in science.
13. What might be the big concern about off line older people?
A. They will suffer from terrible loneliness.
B. They will face risks from online banking.
C. They will fail to benefit from advanced online healthcare.
D. They will underestimate the role of modern technology in healthcare.
14. Why does the author mention Caroline Abrahams’ words in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the popularity of the Internet.
B. To reveal technology is developing very fast now.
C. To indicate the big challenges an aging society faces.
D. To show the Internet is of great importance to older people.
15. What is the message the author wants to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Health services should get support from professionals.
B. Older people should be encouraged to place their health first.
C. Older people should receive some training in using the Internet.
D. Health services should be offered in ways that suit different people.

Due to my unhealthy eating habits, I became fatter and fatter after college. My good friend Anoush was a running enthusiast. So he advised me to lose weight by running and he promised to accompany me to run.
Seven years later, I got more serious about running. And I dreamed to participate in Boston Marathon. Anoush wanted to attend the same marathon with me. Every day we spared our time to practise hard, during which time Anoush gave me much professional guidance and encouragement. And then one day, both of us qualified for the 2017 Boston Marathon. We were excited but unfortunately, several weeks before the marathon, we had a serious quarrel. I didn’t talk with him anymore.
The day came. Anoush and I stood at the starting line. He said, “Good luck! You will certainly finish the marathon.” Hearing his words, I looked at him, saying, “It’s none of your business.”
Then we started running. Soon, I passed Anoush.
But I struggled in the heat starting at mile 16. I felt most of my oxygen went to the muscle in my legs and less in my brain, which made me feel a bit light-headed and dizzy (眩晕的). I continually encouraged myself, “Just get to the finish, run bold, and you will win.” But all phrases that I say to myself didn’t work.
Gradually I felt out of breath and had to slow down my pace. As I ran down the famous last stretch of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street, I fell down on the ground.

Looking into his faithful eyes, I realized that he was not cheating me and that he was really helping me. He just forgot the quarrel between us. I stood up and began to run with him.
When Anoush and I crossed the finish line, the audience at present applauded. Without any preparation, I was hugged by Anoush tightly. Suddenly, I felt regretful to break up with him. Then, I mustered up my courage to say sorry to Anoush. “Thank you and I am so sorry to you, my dear friend. I should not have quarreled with you.” “Just forget it. You know, we are good friends.” Anoush said. I felt more than happy and lucky to have such a friend in my life. Though quarrels between friends could not be avoided, as long as we have him/her in our mind, we would be good friends forever.
