Dan Simpson, a 68-year-old Domino’s Pizza delivery driver, attracted international attention and got over $ 40,000 in donations after a simple act of consideration for visually impaired customers was shared online.
On March 27, 2026, Simpson delivered pizzas and two bottles of Diet Coke to Brian Wilson and his wife Katie, who are both visually impaired. When picking up the order, he found the store had run out of Diet Coke.
Unable to reach the couple by phone to discuss other possible ways, Simpson chose not to replace the drink. Instead, he decided to solve the problem himself, driving to another nearby convenience store to buy the required Diet Coke before continuing his delivery.
Upon arrival, he politely explained what he had done. Brian Wilson was deeply moved. Though buying drinks was simple for sighted people, it was extremely challenging for the visually impaired couple to go out independently. Simpson’s consideration saved them great trouble. When Wilson offered extra cash as a tip, Simpson refused.
Wilson recorded the moment via his smart doorbell camera and shared the video on TikTok. It spread widely online and racked up thousands — even millions — of views around the world, viewers praising Simpson’s sincerity and devotion. Later, people learned that Simpson worked as a delivery driver for 14 years and lived a difficult life.
To help him enjoy a secure retirement, Wilson launched a GoFundMe campaign. Within eight days, more than 6,000 donors raised nearly $ 45,000, greatly exceeding expectations. Simpson was shocked by the generous donations, initially suspecting it might be a scam. He remarked he had only done a small thing and never imagined such rewards.
Simpson’s willingness to go the extra mile not only assisted customers in need but also inspired people worldwide to spread kindness.
4. What did Simpson do when the store had no Diet Coke?
A. He canceled the order. B. He got a different drink.
C. He purchased it elsewhere. D. He ignored it.
5. Why is Simpson’s difficult life mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. To explain why he made donations. B. To contrast his hardship with his kindness.
C. To criticize the pizza company for low pay. D. To suggest he expected rewards for his act.
6. What does the underlined phrase “go the extra mile” in the last paragraph really mean?
A. Drive a longer distance. B. Pay additional money.
C. Deliver to faraway places. D. Make more efforts than expected.
7. What lesson can we learn from the text?
A. One good turn deserves another. B. Every dog has its day.
C. God helps those who help themselves. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems’ overly agreeable responses may affect the way people handle social dilemmas and interpersonal problems, a new study suggests.
Myra Cheng, a Stanford professor and lead author, started the research after learning that undergraduates were using AI to solve relationship issues and even write break-up texts. While AI was overly agreeable when handling fact-based questions, only a handful of studies explored how the large language models (LLMs) that powered AI systems could judge social dilemmas.
Cheng and her team evaluated 11 LLMs, including Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. They used datasets of interpersonal advice and statements describing harmful actions. They also used 2,000 prompts (提示语) based on Reddit posts where the original poster was typically judged to be wrong. The research found that, on average, the models agreed with the user 49% more often than humans did. Moreover, the LLMs supported problematic behavior in 47% of the harmful prompts.
Then the researchers had over 2,400 participants chat with both agreeable and disagreeable AIs. Participants judged agreeable responses as more trustworthy, thus strengthening their own viewpoints and making them more likely to reuse the AI for interpersonal issues. In addition, participants also rated both types of AIs as equally objective, suggesting they could not tell when an AI was overly agreeable.
One reason the researchers pointed out was that the AIs rarely told the users directly that the users were right about something. Instead, they used academic language to indirectly side with the user.
In effect, for interpersonal matters, LLMs told people what they wanted to hear rather than what they needed to hear. As AI use grows via chatbots and AI tools built into Google search, there is a concern that relying on AI for interpersonal advice could damage people’s moral growth and weaken their sense of responsibility while narrowing their views. “AI makes it really easy to avoid friction (摩擦) with other people,” Cheng said, noting that such friction can be productive for healthy relationships.
8. What made Myra Cheng carry out the research?
A. AI frequently made mistakes when answering factual questions.
B. Earlier studies could judge AI social interaction thoroughly.
C. Students begged her to upgrade AI for personal troubles.
D. Students used AI for relationship problems and earlier studies were limited.
9. What can we infer from the research findings?
A. AI models agreed with users almost as frequently as humans.
B. LLMs accepted improper actions in most harmful situations.
C. Agreeable AI responses could make participants confident in their opinions.
D. Participants could recognize overly agreeable responses without difficulty.
10. What does Myra Cheng think of interpersonal friction?
A. It damages ordinary relationships. B. It benefits positive relationships.
C. It weakens long-lasting relationships. D. It affects close relationships.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Special styles of AI’s agreeable responses. B. Key features of AI’s agreeable responses.
C. Positive effects of AI’s agreeable responses. D. Hidden risks of AI’s agreeable responses.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. D

Wind turbines (涡轮机) are a net positive for a sustainable society. However, their giant, spinning blades (旋转叶片) can be deadly to winged animals like birds and bats. Although some reports dramatically overstate wind farms’ danger to flying species, each megawatt (兆瓦) of wind power may accidentally kill two-to-six birds and four-to-seven bats every year. That may not seem like many deaths, but every animal counts for an endangered species.
To lower such risks, engineers are developing new methods to make wind turbines easier for wildlife to notice and avoid. One potential solution may draw inspiration from some dangerous creatures in nature. As a study published in Behavioral Ecology shows, birds and bats are more likely to stay away from turbines whose blades are painted with warning colors similar to those of poisonous coral snakes and dart frogs.
“White blades, which are the most frequently used pattern around the world, turned out to be the worst option for birds,” Johanna Mappes, a scientist from University of Helsinki and study co-author, said in a statement. “This suggests that a relatively simple visual change could reduce bird deaths in connection with wind power.”
To test how birds respond to various turbine designs, the researchers showed birds videos of spinning blades with various color patterns, including traditional white, single black blades, red-white stripes and newly-designed, biomimetic (仿生的) red-black-yellow patterns. Using bird-friendly touchscreens to show real-life situations, the researchers could explore birds’ behavior without putting them in danger. Their tests showed that birds tended to get close to white blades most frequently while they actively avoided the blades with nature-inspired warning colors the most.
There is no way to completely prevent wind turbines from ever accidentally harming or killing animals. However, the study’s authors believe a wider industry adoption of inspired color designs could be an easy and cheap way to make the technology safer. If proven effective in real-world situations across different countries and bird species, this method may bring great changes to the global wind power industry.
12. Why are the numbers of bird and bat deaths mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To show the numbers are surprisingly high. B. To illustrate the threat is small but matters.
C. To argue against wind power. D. To overstate the danger.
13. How did researchers carry out the bird test?
A. Through on-screen images. B. By conducting field tests.
C. With colored physical blades. D. By direct field observation.
14. What can we learn about the new design?
A. It has been popularized. B. It needs further tests.
C. It can completely prevent bird injuries. D. It works well for most bird species.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To criticize white blades. B. To show the process of a study.
C. To present a practical solution. D. To prove wind energy harmful.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C

The Power of Reading Aloud in English Learning
Reading aloud is an often overlooked yet highly effective practice in English learning, offering unique benefits that silent reading alone cannot match. ____16____
Reading aloud sharpens pronunciation and intonation. When we speak out words and sentences, we can hear our own voice, making it easier to identify mispronounced sounds or an awkward pace. ____17____ By copying native speakers’ intonation through reading aloud, we gradually develop a natural speaking style that avoids the robot-like tone common in silent learners.
____18____ The combination of visual input, listening input and motor input activates various areas of the brain, creating stronger neural connections. That’s to say, words and sentence structures learned through reading aloud are more likely to stay in long-term memory. Besides, the act of expressing ideas helps deepen understanding of context and logic.
Reading aloud boosts language sense and confidence. Regular practice exposes learners to the flow of English including its rhythm, word combinations, and idiomatic expressions, developing a natural sense for what sounds right. Over time, this sense of language helps learners speak and write more naturally. ____19____ It is a key factor in moving from passive learning to active communication.
In short, reading aloud is a simple yet powerful tool that integrates pronunciation, memory, and fluency training. It turns hard-to-grasp words into practical language skills. ____20____ For anyone struggling to master English, integrating reading aloud into daily practice is a choice that produces lasting rewards.
A. Reading aloud strengthens memory and comprehension.
B. Reading aloud transforms positive language into active engagement.
C. As a result, the learning process becomes more effective.
D. With these skills, learners can master English within a short time.
E. Here are several key advantages of reading aloud for English learners.
F. Additionally, overcoming the hesitation to speak aloud builds confidence.
G. This direct listening feedback is also crucial for more understandable pronunciation.

A Warm Surprise from My Best Friends
Recently, I have been having a really hard time with my physics study. As a senior student, physics knowledge has become much more difficult than that in junior high school. Complex formulas (公式) and difficult problem-solving methods always made me confused. No matter how hard I tried to do exercises and review textbooks, I still failed to keep up with my classmates.
Things got worse after the recent physics exam. When I received my paper with a terrible score, I felt extremely upset and disappointed. I blamed myself for my inability to keep up with others. For days, I was in a bad mood and even lost confidence in learning physics.
To my greater depression, I found my two best friends Zoe and Mia acting strangely these days. We used to stay together all the time, chatting and walking home happily after school. However, they suddenly kept distance from me, never waiting for me after class and always leaving school in a hurry.
Every time I turned around, I saw them whispering secretly and putting their heads together. They would quickly separate and pretend nothing had happened once they noticed my sight. Their strange behavior made me feel left out and lonely. I could not help guessing that they might have gossiped about (说三道四) my poor academic performance. But I couldn’t gather my courage to confirm my doubt.
One day, I accidentally dropped my physics workbook on the hallway and bent down to pick it up. Just then, I saw my two friends standing in the corner and talking secretly. I could slightly hear some words like my name, physics notes and presents.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I froze on the spot the instant I overheard their conversation. I walked over quietly and found they were making physics notes and preparing a small gift for me. They told me that they noticed I was upset about the bad exam score, so they spent all their free time sorting key points that I often missed. They also bought a new physics exercise book which had clear explanations for difficult problems. I felt my eyes get wet and realized I had misunderstood them these days.
That night, staring at their carefully-prepared gifts, I was greatly inspired. I knew that I was not alone on the road of learning physics. I made a detailed study plan and decided to work harder with my two friends. Every weekend, we would meet to solve problems together, and my physics grades slowly got better. This warm surprise let me know that true friends will always stand by you when you are in trouble.
