If the government had implemented stricter regulations on industrial waste disposal a decade ago, the water quality in the major rivers across the country would not have deteriorated to such an alarming level that it now poses a serious threat to public health.
│
If the government had implemented stricter regulations on industrial waste disposal a decade ago
│ └── a decade ago:时间状语
│
└── [主句 ─ 与过去事实相反] the water quality in the major rivers across the country would not have deteriorated to such an alarming level that it now poses a serious threat to public health
│ └── in the major rivers across the country:介词短语作定语
├── would not have deteriorated:谓语(would not have + 过去分词)
├── to such an alarming level:程度状语
└── [结果状语从句] that it now poses a serious threat to public health
├── that:连词(与such呼应,such...that...)
├── a serious threat:宾语
would/could/might/should + have + 过去分词
If the government had implemented...the water quality would not have deteriorated...
三、such...that...
本句主句中出现了 "such an alarming level that..."
- 对比:so + 形容词/副词 + that(so修饰形容词/副词)
*It was such a serious problem that the government had to take immediate action.*
*The problem was so serious that the government had to take immediate action.*
would not have deteriorated"译为"就不会恶化到"。"such...that..."
与过去相反的虚拟语气,从句用 had done,主句用 would/could/might have done。 本题还嵌套了 such...that...结构,注意从句"that it now poses"中的 now 提示了现在的客观事实。

Had the pilot not reacted with remarkable speed and professionalism when the engine failed unexpectedly during the flight, the consequences of this technical failure could have been far more disastrous than they actually turned out to be.
│
├── [虚拟条件从句 ─ 倒装省略if] Had the pilot not reacted with remarkable speed and professionalism when the engine failed unexpectedly during the flight
If the pilot had not reacted
│ ├── not reacted:谓语否定形式(had + not + 过去分词)
│ ├── with remarkable speed and professionalism:方式状语
│ └── [时间状语从句] when the engine failed unexpectedly during the flight
│ ├── when:连词
│ └── during the flight:时间状语
│
└── [主句 ─ 与过去事实相反] the consequences of this technical failure could have been far more disastrous than they actually turned out to be
├── the consequences of this technical failure:主语
├── could have been:谓语(could have + 过去分词)
├── far more disastrous:表语(far修饰比较级more disastrous)
└── [比较状语从句] than they actually turned out to be
├── turned out to be:谓语("结果是")
If the pilot had not reacted...
Had the pilot not reacted...
If I were you...
Were I you...
If it should rain...
Should it rain...
看到句首出现 Had/Were/Should + 主语 + ...
far
far more serious(严重得多)
much
……得多
much better(好得多)
a little
稍微
a little more expensive(稍贵一些)
even
even more important(甚至更重要)
far more disastrous than they actually turned out to be" 中的比较结构译为"比实际结果要灾难性得多"。
还原方法:把Had/Were/Should放回主语后,加上if。 口诀:"Had/Were/Should在句首,虚拟倒装不用愁"。

Should the proposed ban on single-use plastics be approved by the legislature in the coming months, it would represent one of the most significant environmental policies ever adopted by this country and would set an example for other nations to follow.
│
├── [虚拟条件从句 ─ 与将来事实相反,省略if的倒装] Should the proposed ban on single-use plastics be approved by the legislature in the coming months
If the proposed ban...should be approved
│ ├── the proposed ban on single-use plastics:从句主语(名词短语)

├── would set:谓语
├── an example:宾语
└── for other nations to follow:不定式短语作定语(修饰example)
If it rained tomorrow...
② should do
If it should rain tomorrow...
③ were to do
were to + 动词原形
If it were to rain tomorrow...
Should the proposed ban be approved...
= If the proposed ban should be approved...
"one of the most significant environmental policies" 中的复数名词 policies 是重点——"one of" 后面必须跟复数名词!
in the coming months"译为"在未来几个月内"。"ever adopted by..." set an example for"译为"为……

start from scratch(从头开始);build from scratch(从零建起)。例:They had to start the project from scratch.
If the researchers had collected more data samples during the initial phase of the study, they would be able to draw more reliable conclusions now instead of having to repeat the entire experiment from scratch.
│
If the researchers had collected more data samples during the initial phase of the study
│ ├── more data samples:宾语(more修饰data samples)
│ └── during the initial phase of the study:时间状语
│
└── [主句 ─ 与现在事实相反] they would be able to draw more reliable conclusions now instead of having to repeat the entire experiment from scratch
├── would be able to draw:谓语(would + 动词原形,表示与现在事实相反)
├── more reliable conclusions:宾语
└── having to repeat the entire experiment from scratch:动名词短语(作instead of的宾语)
├── the entire experiment:宾语
(Mixed Conditional)
had collected
would be able
had done
had done
would have done
*Instead of going to the party, he stayed home.*
*He chose tea instead of coffee.*

insist(坚持要求)
二命令
order(命令),command(指挥)
三建议
suggest(建议),recommend(建议),propose(提议)
四要求
demand(要求),require(要求),request(请求),ask(要求)
- invest more resources...(动词短语)
- continuing to rely...(动名词短语)
that contribute to global warming" 是定语从句,译为"导致全球变暖的"。
suggest/recommend/advise 等表示"建议"的动词后,宾语从句用 (should) + 动词原形。

在 "It is + 形容词 + that..."
vital, necessary, essential, important, crucial
urgent, imperative
strange, surprising, natural
建议性
advisable, desirable, preferable
二、not only...but also...
本句中,educators 有两个并列的虚拟谓语:not only transmit...but also cultivate...。
句尾的 "as these skills are essential..."
"It is vital that..." 主语从句中的 "(should) not only transmit...but also cultivate..."
It is + vital/necessary/essential/important + that → that从句用虚拟语气,谓语动词用 动词原形(should可省略)。 It is true/obvious/known that 用陈述语气。

│
She talked about her childhood experiences in the small mountain village with such warmth and nostalgia

├── in a big city:地点状语
└── for over thirty years:时间状语
一、as if/as though 引导的虚拟语气
as if/as though
一般过去时(be用were)
—
had never left
would/could + 动词原形
—
*It looks as if it is going to rain.*(天看起来要下雨——有可能)
*This meat tastes as if it has gone bad.*(肉尝起来好像坏了——可能真坏了)
三、such...that...
"such warmth and nostalgia that..."
- such + 名词 + that:such warmth that...(如此热情以至于……)
- so + 形容词/副词 + that:so warm that...(如此热情以至于……)
"with such warmth and nostalgia" 译为"带着如此的温暖和怀旧之情"。as if 从句中的虚拟语气 "had never left" 译为"从未离开过"(不需要加"本来"等词)。"
但要注意:如果 as if 后的内容可能是真实的(如 It looks as if it is going to rain),则用陈述语气。

一般过去时(be用were)
I wish I were a bird.
I wish I had studied harder.
would/could/might + 动词原形
I wish it would stop raining.
wish
hope
*I hope the education system will improve.*(有可能改善——有信心)
*I wish the education system would improve.*(很难改善——纯属愿望)
三、"place emphasis on" 搭配
同义表达:put/lay emphasis on。
"wish that...would..." place less emphasis on...and more focus on..."

But for the timely intervention of the international community and the tireless efforts of local volunteers
│ ├── But for:介词("要不是")
│ ├── the timely intervention of the international community:名词短语1
│ │ └── of the international community:介词短语作定语(修饰intervention)
│ ├── and:连词
│ └── the tireless efforts of local volunteers:名词短语2

│
If it had not been for the timely intervention...and the tireless efforts...
│

│ └── caused by the severe earthquake:过去分词短语作定语(修饰crisis)
├── would have resulted in:谓语(would have + 过去分词)
├── far greater loss of life and property:宾语
└── in the affected areas:地点状语
but for + 名词
要不是
If it hadn't been for...
But for the rain, we would have gone.
without + 名词
If there were no... / If it hadn't been for...
Without water, life would not exist.
otherwise / or
否则
If not...
I was busy; otherwise I would have helped.
二、but for 的完整还原
But for the timely intervention...the crisis would have resulted in...
= If it had not been for the timely intervention...the crisis would have resulted in...
"caused by the severe earthquake" 是过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰 "the humanitarian crisis",相当于定语从句 "which was caused by the severe earthquake"。
the timely intervention of the international community" 译为"国际社会的及时干预"。" in the affected areas" 译为"在受灾地区"。"loss of life and property" 是固定表达,译为"生命和财产损失"。
看到 but for / without / otherwise / or,立刻意识到这是含蓄条件。判断虚拟方向:but for / without + 名词 → 如果表示过去的条件 → 主句用 would/could have done。口诀:"but for不看if脸,虚拟语气照样用"。

Without the groundbreaking discoveries made by early scientists in the field of genetics, modern medicine would not have been able to develop the effective treatments and vaccines that have saved countless lives around the world.
│
Without the groundbreaking discoveries made by early scientists in the field of genetics
│ ├── the groundbreaking discoveries:名词短语
│ │ └── made by early scientists in the field of genetics:过去分词短语作定语
│ │ ├── made by early scientists:动作执行者
│ │ └── in the field of genetics:地点状语
│ │
If there had been no groundbreaking discoveries.../If it had not been for...
│
└── [主句 ─ 与过去事实相反] modern medicine would not have been able to develop the effective treatments and vaccines that have saved countless lives around the world
├── modern medicine:主语
├── would not have been able to develop:谓语(would not have + been able to + develop)
├── the effective treatments and vaccines:宾语
│ └── [定语从句] that have saved countless lives around the world

│ └── around the world:地点状语
└── around the world:地点状语(修饰主句)
Without the groundbreaking discoveries...
= If it had not been for the groundbreaking discoveries...(与过去相反)
= If there had been no groundbreaking discoveries...(与过去相反)
Without his help, I would have failed.(事实:他确实帮了)
He left without saying goodbye.(事实:他没告别)
"made by early scientists in the field of genetics" 是过去分词短语,修饰 discoveries,作用相当于定语从句 "which were made by early scientists..."。
"that have saved countless lives" 使用现在完成时,表示疫苗从过去到现在挽救了无数生命,强调对现在的影响。
made by early scientists" 译为"由早期科学家做出的"。"would not have been able to develop" 译为"就不可能开发出"(不能译为"将不能开发")。"
