Are you afraid of big storms? Many people are. But did you know some people go out to chase tornadoes? Such storms can hit suddenly and move very quickly, so storm chasers always have to be prepared.
When a tornado is about to hit, professional storm chasers try and get close to it to collect important information. Storm chaser Tim Samaras designed and built many different instruments for studying tornadoes. Throughout his career, the engineer chased down more than 120 tornadoes. Often, he filmed the storms while they were happening just a few kilometers away.
During a storm, storm chasers put special equipment in the way of the tornado. The equipment collects information about things such as wind speed and air pressure. This helps scientists to make better forecasts. It can even help people understand how powerful the winds can be, and as a result, change how we build our houses.
Storm chasing can be exciting, but also very dangerous. The storm chasers’ knowledge and experience are not always enough to keep them safe.
On 31 May 2013, Samaras and his team were chasing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, USA. To their surprise, the tornado behaved in an unexpected way. It grew rapidly and changed its speed and direction. On that terrible day, the largest tornado ever recorded appeared. It was 4.2 kilometers wide and had winds topping 480 kilometers per hour. While the tornado was moving towards them, Samaras and his team were driving as fast as they could. Sadly, when the tornado hit their car, it threw their car into the air like a toy. All three men in the car died.
The story of Tim Samaras is very sad, but his work continues to play an important role in weather science. Thanks to people like him, we can know more about tornadoes and save more lives.
20. Why do storm chasers get close to tornadoes?
A. To take beautiful photos for fun.
B. To collect useful storm information.
C. To run away from dangerous weather.
21. What does the underlined word “forecasts” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Weather predictions. B. Special tools. C. Safe houses.
22. What can we learn about Tim Samaras from the passage?
A. He never got hurt when chasing tornadoes.
B. He made useful machines to study tornadoes.
C. He only chased less than 100 tornadoes in his life.
23. What is the main idea of the whole passage?
A. The biggest tornado in history happened in 2013.
B. Storm chasing is fun and brings no danger at all.
C. Storm chasing is risky but helps people fight tornadoes.

Peter kept his eyes on the ground. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. His stupid mistake made him angry. His team had lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
As soon as he walked through the door, his father asked, “What’s wrong, son?” Peter’s feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room without another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.”
“I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. They’ll probably never let me play again.”
“Soccer is about team effort. You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes. ”
Peter didn’t say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart.
“Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. But I think if we continue to pull together, we’re going to win the next one. ”
To his surprise and relief, his teammates all nodded in agreement.
“Yeah,” they said, “don’t worry about it. It’s never just one person’s fault. We should think about how we can do better next time. ”
Peter smiled. It made him feel lucky to know that he was on a winning team.
28. How did Peter feel at first after the soccer game?
A. Upset and worried. B. Satisfied and happy. C. Excited and proud.
29. What can we learn from Peter’s father’s words?
A. It’s only the player’s fault if the team loses.
B. Winning games is more important than anything else.
C. Communication and learning from mistakes are important.
30. What did Peter do the next day at soccer practice?
A. He practiced alone without talking to teammates.
B. He said sorry to his teammates bravely.
C. He complained about losing the game.
31. What can we infer (推断) from the end of the story?
A. Peter’s team will win all the following matches.
B. Peter will not make mistakes in future games.

Boyan Slat is a well-known young environmental volunteer from the Netherlands. His story of ocean protection has inspired millions of teenagers around the world.
Everything changed in 2011, when 16-year-old Boyan went diving in Greece. Instead of colourful fish and clear seawater, he saw countless plastic (塑料) bags floating everywhere. Some sea creatures were caught in plastic waste. The terrible sight made him heartbroken. At that moment, he decided to clean ocean plastic as a volunteer.
At first, almost no one believed his idea. He wrote to hundreds of companies for support, but most refused him. Some even said his plan was impossible. However, Boyan never gave up. He spent all his spare time doing volunteer work on beaches, such as picking up rubbish, making posters and giving speeches at schools to tell people the danger of marine (海洋的) pollution. He also studied ocean science in his free time to design a special cleaning machine.
In 2013, Boyan set up the Ocean Cleanup, a volunteer group. Young volunteers from all countries joined him. They took part in regular coastal clean-up activities every weekend. For example, they collected plastic bottles, fishing nets and tiny plastic pieces. Up to now, their volunteer teams have removed more than 30, 000 tons of plastic from oceans.
Boyan often says that everyone can be an ocean volunteer. You don’t need big machines to make a difference. You can start with small acts like taking rubbish away after visiting the beach, using fewer plastic products and telling your friends to protect the sea.
The sea is the home of millions of living things. Thanks to young volunteers like Boyan, our blue planet is getting cleaner little by little. Age is never a barrier (障碍) to protecting nature. As long as we take action, we can guard the beautiful ocean together.

He is a naughty, smart and brave boy, who lives with his loving aunt Polly. He hates boring schoolwork and often plays jokes on others. With his best friend Huck Finn Tom experiences many exciting adventures. They even meet a bad man. Although Tom is naughty he always knows what is right. Finally he helps find out the fact and becomes a hero. I really enjoy this lively story. It shows the joy of childhood.
【答案】20. B 21. A 22. B 23. C

In April 2026, a group of French middle school students came to visit a middle school in Chengdu and took part in a wonderful Chinese culture exchange activity. France is well-known for its rich art and romantic (浪漫的) cultural history. This wonderful event offered a great chance for students from both countries to communicate and learn from each other.
The activity included three classic traditional Chinese art forms such as paper-cutting, tea art and Chinese calligraphy. Our Chinese students acted as little teachers and patiently guided their French friends to experience these traditional skills.
During the paper-cutting class, French students learned to cut different beautiful patterns. They finally understood that red paper-cuts are important symbols of good wishes and happiness in Chinese daily life. In the tea art part, they tasted fresh and fragrant (芬芳的) tea and felt the peaceful and gentle spirit of Chinese tea culture. They showed great interest in every detail.
Later, our French guests tried writing simple Chinese characters with brushes. Although it was a little difficult, they kept practicing carefully and felt proud of their works. They also shared their local culture with us. They introduced French painting art and some famous cultural traditions. They showed great creativity and artistic talent, which left a deep impression (印象) on us.
All students enjoyed the warm cultural communication. This cross-cultural activity built a solid bridge of friendship between China and France. It tells us that culture has no borders. As teenagers, we should value our traditional culture, learn excellent foreign culture wisely and share cultural beauty with the whole world.
24. Where did the culture exchange activity take place?
A. In Paris. B. In Beijing. C. In Chengdu.
25. What do red paper-cuts mean in China?

45. 请根据《The Secret Garden》回答:
Why do you think the book is named The Secret Garden?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The garden is locked and hidden for many years, so it is a secret at first. And it secretly changed everyone.
