Tom was a quiet boy in a middle school. He was good at drawing, but few people knew it. Because of his fear, he hardly showed his pictures to others. He felt like a nobody.
His closest friend, Leo, was outgoing and brave. Leo encouraged Tom to change. “Everyone can make a difference if they try,” he told Tom. “You just need to take the first step. But courage is not the absence (不在) of fear, but the presence (存在) of action.”
With Leo’s encouragement, Tom began to change. He started attending a school art competition. In his picture, he drew a small plant coming out of a hard rock. Its body was soft and not straight, but two green leaves were going up to the light above. No ground could be seen around its bottom. Tom took an active part in the preparation, and his hidden talent began to shine. However, one classmate, jealous of his progress, laughed at his work. But Tom dealt with it calmly. He kept working hard. In the end, he won the first prize. His teacher and classmates were proud of him, and his picture was shown in the school hall.
By the end of the story, Tom had become a confident boy. He learned that there’s no success without fear. But those fears helped him grow. Tom showed that personal changes were possible for anyone.

Are Short Videos Making Us Less Smart?
A 2024 report from China Youth Daily shows that over 60% of teens spend more than three hours on short videos every day. Some even watch them as long as they are awake. Many parents and teachers worry about this. They point out that teens are spending less time on study and sleep.
Why is it so hard to say no? The answer lies in the smart system behind these apps. It finds out what we like and gives us more of the same. The more we watch, the more it feeds us. This is like a hole that is hard to climb out of. Even when you want to stop, the next video always looks interesting. In fact, the system does not want you to stop at all.
So what are the negative effects? First, short videos narrow your world. You see only what you like, missing many important things. Second, you may lose patience for reading and thinking. You want everything to be fast and easy. Third, you may easily get angry or sad, as many videos show only one side of a story. You may believe something that is not true.
True relaxation should not cost your time or mind. So put your phone down and find a better way to rest. A book, a sport, or a talk with a friend—these small changes can help you take back control. After all, your time is your life. Don’t let a small screen steal it away.
28. What does the 2024 report from China Youth Daily show?
A. Teens spend more time on study than on short videos.
B. Most parents do not allow their teens to watch short videos.
C. More than 60% of teens spend over three hours on short videos daily.
29. Why does the writer mention “a hole that is hard to climb out of”?
A. To explain why teens keep watching short videos.
B. To tell teens to stay away from real holes.
C. To show how interesting short videos are.
30. What does the writer think of short videos?
A. He thinks they are helpful for teens to relax after study.
B. He thinks they are interesting and help us learn new things.
C. He thinks they are not true relaxation and may cause negative effects.
31. How is the passage organized?
A. Facts→Result→Problem→Cause→Call for action
B. Facts→Problem→Cause→Result→Call for action
C. Facts→Problem→Result→Advice→Call for action
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. C 31. B

Ms. He is 92 years old. She was born in a small village in Jiangyong County, Yongzhou. Jiangyong is famous for Nüshu—the world’s only writing system designed and used only by women.
Ms. He learned Nüshu from her mother when she was a child. In the old days, women in Jiangyong could not go to school. They could not learn men’s writing. But they wanted to share their feelings, sadness, and wishes. So they created their own writing. They wrote on fans, cloth, or paper. Mothers taught daughters Nüshu at home. For hundreds of years, it was a secret language.
After growing up, Ms. He worked hard to keep Nüshu alive. She collected old Nüshu works. In 2002, she opened a museum to show them to the public. She also gave free lessons to young people. Many of her students have become good Nüshu writers, and some even teach others now.
Today, Nüshu is no longer a secret. In 2006, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产). People from all over the world come to learn it. Ms. He’s story shows that with a strong will (决心), one can keep an old culture alive. As a saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
