三、阅读理解(共30分,每题2分)
As part of this year's Diversity Arts Series,.students at Dulwich College(德威学院)had an
innovative journey into the tradition of Peking Opera..Together with Yuyin Society(豫英剧院),a
famous Peking Opera company in China, the school planned three different activities-an online
Peking Opera experience;a day tour of Yuyinge(俞音阁),a theatre built in the Qing Dynasty;and
a two-day in-person Peking Opera workshop.These activities brought a rich,interdisciplinary(
learning experience to the students:music,art,drama,Mandarin and,of course,an
awareness of Chinese cultural history.
uyin Society recorded a video to immerse(使沉浸于)students in Peking Opera, just in
time for their Chinese Culture Day.In addition to classic Peking Opera performances, the video
included a special backstage view of what professional actors do behind the scenes, especially
how they do their facial make-up and wear costume headpieces.Students learned about how
different make-up and costumes would represent and reflect characters'different personalities and
status
On the day tour of Yuyinge, students were able to touch and feel the history of Peking
Opera through the beautiful ancient architecture. In addition, students were able to explore Peking
opera through a mix of activities, including a crash course on Peking Opera,a costume dress
rehearsal ),a lesson on how to do the stage movements,as well as appreciating an actual play.
The students walked away with knowledge of the five major roles in Peking Opera and a keen
aesthetic(美学的)sense of the art,.
Students at Dulwich College come from over 30 different countries and regions, each
carrying an unique cultural background.Although most of the students had been exposed to
Peking Opera to some extent, few had engaged with the art closely until they joined the two-day
hands-on Peking Opera workshop.Teachers from Yuyin Society shared with students the various
roles and techniques of Peking Opera and guided them through interactive activities, where our
students learned to draw mask paintings, sing famous pieces and practice stage poses.
36.What was the main purpose of Dulwich College's collaboration with Yuyin Society?
A.To organize a Peking Opera competition
B.To provide students with an interdisciplinary learning experience
C.To prepare students for a professional Peking Opera performance

40.What is the author's main purpose in writing this text?

A research group, led by a scientist Professor Lilach Hadany at Tel Aviv University, have
conducted a six-year experiment, proving that plants talk, particularly in certain stressful
situations.
Plants were put in a sound-proof chamber (and were recorded by two microphones.
Some plants were in need of water, others were cut,and a control group were left undamaged. The
researchers used an AI algorithm to separate the sounds successfully identifying the differences
between the sounds made depending on whether they were dry or cut.
On average, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20kHz,but the sounds produced
by plants are in the 40-80kHz region, far beyond our hearing capabilities. That doesn't mean they
can't be heard."White unnoticed to the human ear,the sounds sent out by plants can probably be
heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects,"Hadany tells us.Though this has yet to
be proven,it's possible that these animals use this information for their benefit, choosing which
plants to eat,for example
While farming has become a science itself, there's still a lot of estimation involved.
If farmers were able to receive exact information directly from their crop, they could start a much
more efficient method of care. The study thinks that more proper irrigation (could save up
to 50%of water cost and greatly improve the product."In times when more and more areas are
exposed to drought due to climate change, efficient water use becomes even more necessary, for
both food safety and natural environment."They would also be able to better identify and control
disease in a crop.
The sounds sent out by plants are not cries for help, but rather a by-product of material
stress rather than communication.Just as Hadany notes,"Obviously,a wonderful field of flowers
can be a rather noisy place. It's just that we can't hear the sounds."
41.The author tries to tell the readers in Para.2
A.the differences between the sounds
B.the process of the experiments
C.the inventions from the farmers
D.the function of the plants
42.The researchers'findings may contribute to the farmers of
A.earning a lot of money
B.taking good care of their crop
C.recognizing the origin of the plant
D.making full preparations for a discovery
43.What can be learned about the experiment in Para.3?
A.Some insects can notice the smell of the plants.
B.Not all the people can improve their work efficiency.
C.Neither animals nor plants can hear the sounds by people.
D.Some animals may use the sounds by plants to choose food.

new, inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more
efficient with water and sunlight.Right now the new leaf is about 10 times more effective at
carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one.Besides, the device can run in whatever water is
available. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water.
Hopefully, each home could have access to the new application in the future.

A.To promote a new technology.
B.To recommend a research team.
C.To introduce a scientific discovery.
D.To explain a historical event.
What will power your house in the future?Nuclear wind or solar power?According to
scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT)in the US,it might be artificial
leaves
Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as
photosynthesis(光合作用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this process.
The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a
special silicon chip with catalysts().Similar to natural leaves,it can split water into
hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then
stored in a fuel cell ()using those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top
of a house or beside the house.
Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is
promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries."One can imagine
villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based
on this technology"said an American scientist,Nocera.
An artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too
expensive and unstable for practical use.The new leaf, however,is made of cheap materials, easy
to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies,Nocera showed that an artificial leaf could operate
continuously for at least 45 hours.
The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful
When Dan Shaw gets up from the sofa in his home,Cuddles is never far away. When he wants to
go outside,he doesn't take Cuddles out for walk-Cuddles takes him for a walk.Cuddles is
clearly no ordinary family pet.It is a two-foot-high miniature horse and serves as the guiding eyes

instant he met Cuddles,he knew he was making the right choice. Then he began his training

JL)and find elevator buttons.Cuddles even demonstrated()its ability to step in front of Shaw
and block him,to prevent him from walking into a dangerous situation. The little horse also
expertly led Shaw through busy shopping malls. They got along without any difficulties. Now
Shaw is confident that Cuddles will change his life for the better.
