No matter what your goals are in life, there is one great law that you need to obey in order to be successful: No one else is going to climb the ladder of success for you. No one else is responsible for your health, wealth, happiness, or success. From the day you leave your parents’ house and start to make your own choices, you are responsible for your life and the choices you make.
You choose the job you work in, the person you live with, and how much you exercise every day. Only you can choose how you spend your time, and the decisions you make on a consistent basis will make or break your life.
If you want a better life, you need to make better decisions. You can blame other people for your lack of results or happiness all life long, but it doesn’t change anything. Only you can change your life by changing the choices you make. Take responsibility for everything in your life, even if you can’t directly influence it. Even if it’s not in your direct control, you can always choose how you respond.
According to motivational speaker Brian Tracy, the biggest enemy to success is the path of least resistance. If you choose what is fun and easy over what is necessary, you will never reach the levels of success and happiness you are capable of achieving in your life. That’s because every great victory requires great sacrifice.
If success was easy, everybody would be successful. But because success in any area of your life requires hard work and sacrifices, most people will never reach their full potential.
Whenever you decide not to do what you should be doing, you not only waste your opportunity to grow as a person, but you also lose confidence in yourself. You start to see yourself as lazy and unsuccessful, and that self-image will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
To achieve any goal you have, there are only three things you need: A clear vision for what it is that you want, a plan to get there, and massive action consistently repeated over time! While the first two parts are the easy parts of the equation, most people struggle with the last part: Hard work.
There is nothing that you can’t achieve with hard work, so it is necessary that you build the habit of choosing what is hard and necessary over what is fun and easy to do. Doing this is probably the surest way to succeed in life.

In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well. But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question: “Why is writing important?” Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important.
This would have to change. As a new unit started, I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments, a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre (体裁) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart. I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human.
Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 1? A. Ninth graders. B. Students’ parents. C. Modern writers. D. Fictional characters.
Why did the students perform poorly in writing their first essay? A. They were not given enough time. B. They had a very limited vocabulary. C. They misunderstood the question. D. They had little interest in the topic.
What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Mixed. B. Amazing. C. Similar. D. Disturbing.
What does the author’s experience show? A. Teaching is learning. B. Still waters run deep. C. Knowledge is power. D. Practice makes perfect.

固定短语:in and of itself 就其本身而言;strike sb as + adj.

I required that...and that...(两个 that 引导并列宾语从句)
插入语:a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop 是 two assignments 的同位语,解释两次作业内容

Passage 02
The apprentice effect refers to a special learning phenomenon: people can achieve better learning results when they learn closely with excellent role models, just like apprentices learning skills from masters. A recent study carried out by educational psychologists proved this effect fully. Researchers divided 240 middle school students into two groups. Group A studied ordinary textbooks alone, while Group B finished the same learning tasks together with top-performing senior students who acted as learning partners. After an eight-week experiment, Group B scored 16% higher in the final test on average than Group A. Besides, students in Group B showed stronger learning motivation and were more willing to solve difficult problems actively. Why does the apprentice effect work well?
First of all, excellent role models set clear standards for behavior and study habits. Students will unconsciously imitate good learning methods, such as making study plans and sorting wrong questions regularly.
Secondly, communication with outstanding peers creates positive competition. Learners will push themselves to keep up with their partners instead of being lazy.
Finally, role models can offer timely targeted advice when learners meet difficulties, which solves problems much faster than thinking alone. However, experts remind us that the effect cannot work automatically. Simply sitting beside top students cannot bring progress. Learners must take the initiative to communicate, observe and learn from role models, instead of copying answers blindly. Only active learning can make full use of the apprentice effect.
1、 What is the apprentice effect?
A. Learning skills by practicing repeatedly. B. Making progress by learning from outstanding role models.
C. Improving grades through strict self-discipline. D. Gaining knowledge by finishing tasks independently.
2、What can we know about the experiment?
A. Group A learned together with senior top students. B. Group B got lower test scores than Group A.
C. The experiment lasted two months. D. All participants were high school students.
3、Which is NOT one of the reasons for the apprentice effect?
A. Good examples set proper study standards. B. Peer competition encourages learners to work harder.C. Role models give timely help with learning troubles. D. Top students help finish homework directly for learners.
4、What do experts warn students against doing?
A. Copying answers from role models mindlessly. B. Communicating with top students regularly.
C. Making detailed daily study plans. D. Asking seniors for learning advice bravely.
Passage 03
I used to be poor at math, and my 10-year-old daughter Lily also feared calculation. We often sighed over math homework every evening. Last year, I decided to learn the abacus together with Lily to change the situation. At first, both of us found it hard to remember the bead rules. The upper bead stands for five, while each lower bead represents one. We spent the first week practicing basic addition every day. Sometimes Lily made silly mistakes, and I also mixed up the beads now and then. Instead of blaming each other, we encouraged one another and reviewed mistakes together patiently.
After one month of continuous practice, obvious changes took place. Lily could finish two-digit mental arithmetic quickly without writing numbers down on paper. She no longer avoided math exercises and volunteered to finish extra calculation tasks after school. As for me, my number sense improved greatly, and I no longer felt nervous dealing with daily accounting calculations.
What surprised me most was the growth in confidence. Lily used to hide her exam papers with low scores, but now she is willing to share her progress with her classmates proudly. The ancient Chinese abacus is not only a calculating tool, but also a magic helper that brought my daughter and me closer, and helped us build confidence little by little.
1、 Why did the author learn abacus with her daughter?
A. To develop a new hobby in spare time. B. To improve both of their poor math ability.
C. To teach traditional Chinese culture to kids. D. To prepare for the school abacus competition.
2、What do we know about abacus rules?
A. One upper bead equals one. B. Each lower bead stands for five.
C. Upper beads represent five. D. All beads have the same value.
3、What change happened to Lily after learning the abacus?
A. She refused to do extra math homework. B. She finished written arithmetic much faster.
C. She became confident about her math study. D. She could work out difficult geometry problems.
4、What is the main idea of the text?
A. The abacus is the oldest calculating machine in the world.
B. Parent-child learning helps improve math skills and confidence.
C. Traditional tools are more useful than modern calculators.
D. It takes great patience to master the abacus skill.
Passage 04
Mr. Jesse Barrett was my high school English teacher, who left deep lifelong influence on me. I was a quiet shy teenager back then, too afraid to speak in public and never dared to share my opinions in class discussions. I hid myself in the corner of the classroom every English lesson.
One day, Mr. Barrett assigned a speech task about favorite writers. I prepared carefully at home but still planned to give up presenting on the stage. When it was my turn, I froze and could not say a single word. Just as I was ready to run back to my seat in embarrassment, Mr. Barrett smiled gently and told the whole class to wait patiently. He walked to my side and whispered: “Your draft is wonderful, take your time, I believe you can do it.” His warm encouragement calmed my nerves gradually. I finished my speech slowly, and the whole class cheered for me warmly afterward. After class, Mr. Barrett talked with me patiently. He told me that every voice deserves to be heard, and true confidence comes from bravely showing ourselves instead of staying hidden.
During the following two years, he kept offering me chances to join class speeches and English debates. Step by step, I became outgoing and brave enough to express my ideas freely. Years later, I chose journalism as my major in college, exactly because of the inspiration from Mr. Barrett. A good teacher does not only teach knowledge, but also lights up students’ inner world.
1、What can we learn about the author in high school?
A. She was outgoing and active in class activities.
B. She was shy and unwilling to express herself publicly.
C. She was good at delivering English speeches naturally.
D. She was the top student in the English class.
2、What did Mr. Barrett do when the author failed to start her speech?
A. He asked another student to take her place directly.
B. He criticized her for insufficient preparation seriously.
C. He comforted her and encouraged her to finish the speech.
D. He asked the class to laugh at her nervous performance.
3、What did Mr. Barrett teach the author most importantly?
A. How to write excellent English speeches quickly.
B. How to get high scores in English examinations.
C. How to make friends with classmates around her.
D. How to build confidence and show herself bravely.
4、Why did the author choose journalism for college study?
A. She was deeply influenced by Mr. Jesse Barrett.
B. She dreamed of being a news reporter from childhood.
C. Her parents advised her to pick this popular major.
D. She got full marks in high school English exams.
Passage 05
A large number of child psychology studies show that kids begin to worry about personal reputation when seeking help from others as early as seven years old. Many students choose to struggle with difficult problems alone rather than raise hands to ask teachers or classmates for help in class, simply because they fear being seen as incompetent or stupid by peers.
In a famous experiment, researchers invited 576 children aged 4 to 9 to take part in a survey. They described two characters: Kid A truly wanted to become capable, while Kid B only wanted to look smart in front of other kids.
After telling all children that both kids failed a test, researchers asked which one would ask teachers for help actively. Four-year-old kids held equal attitudes towards the two characters. However, children aged seven to eight clearly believed that Kid B, who cared about outward reputation, would refuse to seek help in public.
They considered asking for help a signal of weakness and low ability. Some kids even cheated in small games on purpose to keep the image of being smart. Psychologists point out that concern for reputation is a normal part of children’s social development, but excessive worry will harm learning efficiency.
Teachers and parents should create safe private communication channels for children to ask questions, and praise kids positively for brave questioning, to help children realize that asking for help is a wise way to learn, not a sign of weakness.
1、When do kids start to worry about reputation when asking for help?
A. At the age of four. B. At the age of seven.
B. At 、the age of nine. D. At primary school graduation.
2、How many children took part in the experiment?
A. 276 B. 476 C. 576 D. 756
3、Why do kids refuse to ask for help publicly?
A. They think teachers are too busy to answer questions.
B. They believe solving problems alone can improve ability faster.
C. They are afraid of being considered incompetent by classmates.
D. They think it is rude to disturb classmates during class.
4、What suggestion do psychologists give to adults?
A. Prevent children from cheating in all kinds of games strictly.
B. Punish students who cannot finish schoolwork independently.
C. Encourage kids to ask questions privately and praise brave inquiry.
D. Push children to solve all academic difficulties by themselves.
Passage 06
Nowadays, most students prefer typing notes on digital devices rather than writing by hand. 1____ Actually, both note-taking ways have unique strengths, and we can combine them properly for better study results. Handwritten note-taking brings obvious cognitive advantages. 2____ When we write with pens, we have to summarize and reorganize information actively instead of copying every word word for word. This deep processing strengthens long-term memory greatly. Besides, paper notebooks have no pop-up messages or social software reminders, which effectively cuts down learning distractions. 3____ Typing on laptops or tablets is much faster when recording large amounts of classroom content. Digital notes can be searched with keywords in seconds, edited freely and synchronized across all your electronic devices. You will never worry about losing notebooks or stained pages. 4____ For memory-focused courses such as history and biology, handwritten notes work better. For courses with plenty of data and materials, digital note-taking saves much time. 5____ Making good use of two methods will definitely improve your study efficiency.
A. However, digital note-taking also has its irreplaceable merits.
B. Many people argue over which method is better all the time.
C. It forces your brain to process knowledge more deeply.
D. In fact, we do not need to choose one side completely.
E. In short, each note-taking method fits different learning situations.
F. Handwriting takes more time and cannot store too much information.
G. Digital tools can completely replace traditional handwritten notes soon.
Passage 07
It is natural for every student to feel anxious before and during exams. Proper nervousness can push us to concentrate better, but too much anxiety will make your mind go blank and ruin your performance.
1____ First, full preparation is the most fundamental solution to ease test anxiety. 2____ If you master key knowledge systematically and finish enough targeted exercises, you will walk into the exam room with solid confidence naturally. Second, start answering questions without hesitation once the exam begins.
Many students waste plenty of time staring at the blank paper and letting anxiety grow. 3____ You can always go back to deal with hard questions later, and finishing easy questions first can help you build a steady state quickly. 4____ Simple breathing exercises work well during exams.
根据文章第一段中 “In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
根据文章第二段中 “Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important.
根据文章第三段中划线词下文 “The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
通读全文,再根据文章最后一段中 “I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human. 故选 A。

on the other side of...
use sth to do sth为固定搭配,意为“用某物做某事”,此处不定式to understand作目的状语。

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to senior high school! My name is Linda, your new head teacher. I know many of you are excited but a little worried about the new life here. Today, I’d like to give you some advice.
First, you should learn to introduce yourselves. When you meet new classmates, you can talk about your hobbies, your favorite subjects, and your dreams for high school. Being friendly will help you make new friends quickly.
Second, time management is very important. In senior high school, you have more subjects and more free time. You should make a study plan and stick to it. Don’t spend too much time playing mobile phones. Remember, you are responsible for your own study.
Third, ask for help when you meet difficulties. Our teachers and classmates are always ready to help you. You are not alone here.
I hope you will enjoy your new school life and become a better self. Thank you!

故选 A。
原句:In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life.
I met a cowboy, a strict father, and a modern-day Juliet(主谓宾核心)
In my ninth-grade writing class last year 地点 + 时间状语
2、三个定语从句,分别修饰三个人物名词: ① who saved his town 修饰 a cowboy ② who demanded his son earn straight A’s 修饰 father;demand 后省略 that 的宾语从句,demand (that) sb (should) do 虚拟语气
③ who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life修饰Juliet;after引导时间状语从句
More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
主干:I found myself wondering how...
1、find oneself doing:
2、who’d created these people
They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important.
They could have written pages (could have done 本可以,暗含对比)
后半句:writing didn’t strike them as important
固定短语:in and of itself 就其本身而言;strike sb as + adj.
For the next two assignments, a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre and that it contain a thesis.
主干:I required that...and that...(两个 that 引导并列宾语从句)
插入语:a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop 是 two assignments 的同位语,解释两次作业内容

I walked away with a yearbook
When 引导时间状语从句;full of messages 后置定语修饰 yearbook
, to put..., to teach...
teach 后嵌套宾语从句 what it means to be human
3、固定习语:put oneself in another’s skin 换位思考,设身处地体谅他人

4、A 细节题。
阅读策略:说明文 “定义 + 实验 + 原理 + 建议” 结构,首段抓核心概念,尾段锁定观点提醒;
答题技巧:否定类题目(NOT),采用排除法,逐一匹配原文信息排除正确项;
Passage 04

A. 276 B. 476 C. 576 D. 756
