I come from a poor family in a small village. After I finished Grade 10, my father told me the sad news that he couldn’t afford my study anymore.
The thought of not going to college (大学) made me very worried. One night, lying in bed, I thought about how to continue my studies. I heard that Karachi (卡拉奇) had many jobs, so I decided to go there to find work and pay for my education (教育) by myself. Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis lived happily in London with their parents. They had a comfortable (舒适的) house with a big garden, and their father often told them interesting stories after dinner. But one day, two men came to their house and talked with their father in his study for hours. The children felt something was wrong—their father looked sad when he came out. Soon after, their mother sat them down and said, “We have to leave our home and move to a small white house near a railway line in the country. It will be a new adventure (冒险).”
At first, the children were excited about the idea of a new life. But when they arrived at the house, their excitement went away. The house was much smaller than their London home, with dusty rooms and a tiny (小的) kitchen. There was no fresh food to cook, so they had to eat canned (罐装的) beans and bread for dinner. “This is terrible,” Peter complained (抱怨) unhappily. Their mother tried to cheer them up, but they missed their old life deeply.
The next morning, the children decided to explore (探索) around. Behind the house was a wild garden full of weeds, and at the end of it, they found a railway track shining in the sun. Suddenly, a train rushed (冲过) by with a loud noise, making the ground shake. “It’s like a big dragon!” Bobbie cried out, eyes wide with wonder. Peter, who had always loved engines, was curious and began asking endless questions about how trains worked. From then on, watching trains became their daily joy—they would wave at the passengers (乘客), who often waved back.
One stormy afternoon, the children found a large tree had fallen across the rails after the strong wind. Just then, they heard the sound of a coming train. “We must stop it!” Bobbie shouted. Quick-thinking, they took off their bright red coats—their favorite color—and waved them hard above their heads. The driver saw the bright flashes in the gray day and stopped the train as quickly as he could. Finally, it stopped just a few meters from the tree. Later, the railway manager came to thank them personally, calling them “little heroes.” The children smiled with pride, feeling that their new country life had finally become meaningful.

Beat the Autumn and Winter Blues
As autumn turns to winter, the days get shorter, and the weather turns colder. You may feel more tired, or even a little sad. But don’t be worried. ____43____ You’re not alone. Many people find their moods changing in the cold seasons.
The reasons behind these feelings are clear. Shorter days mean less sunlight, which influences the body’s “happy hormone” (激素) and makes us feel low. ____44____ Cold weather also keeps us indoors more, making us meet our friends and family not so often. As a result, loneliness will grow. All these reasons together often lead to increased worries.
____45____ First, try to catch as much sunlight as possible. Go for a walk in the morning or sit by a bright window when studying—even 20 minutes of sunlight a day can lift your mood. Second, keep your body active. Exercise, like jogging or dancing, helps release stress and makes you feel energetic. You can also do simple indoor workouts if the weather is too bad.
What’s more, talking to someone you trust, like your parents or close friends, about your feelings can make you feel more relaxed. ____46____ Sharing your worries doesn’t mean you're weak; it shows you’re brave enough to face your emotions. Also, try small, fun activities to cheer yourself up, such as baking cookies, listening to music, or watching a favorite movie.
Now, you have not only understood why autumn and winter influence your mood but also learned to use the above simple methods (方法). ____47____ Remember, taking care of your emotional (情感) health is just as important as taking care of your body—so be kind to yourself this cold season!
A. Don’t hide your true feelings.
B. These are common mood changes.
C. How can we deal with these blues?
D. Sunlight is the best way to lift mood.
E. Besides, cold gray days make tasks tiring.
F. It can be much easier for you to stay positive.
