After becoming super rich overnight, an Ottawa woman is now making sure struggling families can afford groceries
Patricia Patty Warden knows how hard things are right now. Grocery prices keep rising, and for many families, even a simple holiday meal feels out of reach. “The hardest thing right now isn’t just the bills — it’s the cost of groceries,” Warden told CTV News. “I’m in a position to give back.”
So she walked into a Greely Foodland and began quietly handing out gift cards to shoppers — hundreds of them. Many were stunned when they realized a stranger had just paid for part of their groceries. By the end of the afternoon, Warden thought she had given away more than $20,000 in grocery gift cards.
Warden won the $70 million Lotto Max jackpot (百万乐透头奖) in May 2024, but she says the biggest change isn’t what she can buy — it’s how many people she can help. “I get to help a lot more people, which was my goal,” she said. “It’s life-changing in that way. But I’m still Patty. That will never change.”
Her generosity comes from a deeply personal place. Before winning the lottery, Warden experienced years of pain, sickness, bad habits and having no home. At one point, she was sleeping on park benches while struggling to survive. “I have my mum to thank for everything,” she said. “She helped me rebuild my life — with honesty, caring, and respect for others. You can’t put a price on that. Seventy million dollars is nothing compared to those values.”
Warden has stayed away from bad habits for 30 years, and she says giving back is one of the greatest joys of her life. “I just want to share my happiness,” she said.
4. What does Warden think is the hardest struggle for families right now?
A. High hotel costs. B. Rising grocery prices.
C. No holiday meals. D. Being out of work.
5. What does the underlined word “stunned” in Paragraph 3 mean?

C. A little sad. D. Really tired.
6. What helped Warden rebuild her life?
A. Years of hardship. B. Help from the food store.
C. Winning the lottery early. D. Her mother’s love and values.
7. Which of the following can best describe Warden?
A. Kind and grateful. B. Rich and proud.
C. Brave and calm. D. Smart and careful.

China’s study tour market is growing very fast, with teenagers crowding into museums, cultural heritage sites, and tech companies for hands-on, immersive (沉浸式的) learning — raising the question of whether China could become a top destination for international student travellers.
At the 2025 Xianghu Dialogue, hosted by the World Tourism Alliance from Wednesday to Friday in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA), a US-based trade association (行业协会) with over 900 member companies in 30 countries, led some 20 international educational travel companies to explore the Chinese market and meet local companies.
Carylann Assante, chief executive officer of SYTA, who was on her first visit to China, said she was pleased by the welcoming nature of the Chinese people, the well-developed tourism market, the quality of hotels and restaurants, and the convenient transportation.
She noted that China strongly attracts young travellers from all over the world with its rich cultural heritage, lively and safe nightlife, and amazing variety of cultures and local foods.
Brent Imrie, president of SYTA and an experienced tour operator from New Zealand, saw a great chance to create study trips to China focused on culture, language, sports, and music. Calling Hangzhou “Asia’s Silicon Valley (硅谷)”, Imrie said he was considering organizing STEM tours for students from the US, Australia, and New Zealand to explore the city’s technological innovation (创新).
Besides organizing study tours to China, Imrie also stressed that by working with the World Tourism Alliance and local tour operators, there is a huge opportunity for Chinese students and educators to connect with SYTA members for overseas study tour experiences.
8. Why did SYTA organize a trip to Hangzhou?
A. To enjoy local nightlife. B. To explore study tour market.
C. To visit famous museums. D. To learn Chinese cooking.
9. What draws young foreign travellers to China according to Assante?
A. Rich culture and safe life. B. Well-developed tourism market.
C. Cheap hotels and foods. D. Convenient transportation.
10. What trips will Imrie consider for students?
A. Australian culture trips. B. American sports trips.
C. Hangzhou STEM tours. D. New Zealand music tours.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. SYTA’s History and Members
B. How to Travel Safely in China
C. Beautiful Scenery in Hangzhou
D. China’s Growing Study Tour Market

The oceans we see today are beautifully blue, but it wasn’t always like this. Long ago, for over 2 billion years, Earth’s earliest oceans had a green colour. This discovery helps us understand Earth’s past and may even help in finding life on other planets.
About 4.5 billion years ago, Earth became a planet. But the first life forms didn’t appear until around 800 million years later. Before life, the planet was covered by large oceans with deep-sea hot springs. These springs sent out a lot of ferrous iron (亚铁) into the water. Around 4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria (蓝细菌), one of the first living things, started to do oxygenic photosynthesis (光合作用). Modern plants use chlorophyll (叶绿素) for photosynthesis, while ancient cyanobacteria used phycobilins (藻胆素) to collect sunlight. Their growth led to the Great Oxidation Event about 2.4 billion years ago, when oxygen began to build up in the air and changed how life developed over time.
Scientists had wondered why cyanobacteria needed phycobilins. A team led by Taro Matsuo studied this. Using computers, they found that as cyanobacteria produced more oxygen, it reacted with the iron in the ocean. Ferrous iron turned into ferric iron (三价铁离子), which can’t break up in water. It formed rust-like things that took in blue and red light, leaving green light to reflect. So the oceans looked green. Cyanobacteria developed into phycobilins to take in green light and survive in these iron-rich, green oceans.
Matsuo wasn’t sure about the “green ocean” idea at first. In 2021, he was doubtful. But after years of research and a field study in 2023 on Iwo Island, where the water had a green shining due to iron hydroxides, his doubt turned into belief.
This study isn’t just about Earth. Matsuo says that green oceans, which might be brighter and easier to see from far away, could help astronomers look for water on other planets. Instead of only looking for blue, they can consider green as a sign too.
12. What colour were Earth’s oceans at first?
A. Blue. B. Green. C. Red. D. Gray.
13. How did ancient cyanobacteria get sunlight?
A. By using phycobilins. B. By using chlorophyll.
C. By using ferrous iron. D. By using oxygen.
14. How did Matsuo feel about “green ocean” at last?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear.
C. Unconcerned. D. Supportive.
15. What is the study’s wider meaning?
A. Finding life on Earth. B. Changing ocean colours.
C. Searching for water in outer space. D. Protecting ocean animals.

I’d just finished a months-long project. When a friend asked how I’d celebrate, the idea never occurred to me — I was already thinking of the next task. ____16____ Here are some simple ways to celebrate your every day.
Start your day as a celebration.
Celebrate the fact that you are alive. Take a few moments every morning to simply enjoy a few minutes over a cup of coffee or tea and breathe in the aroma (香气), feel the warmth, and enjoy the comfort. ____17____ When you start your day feeling thankful and happy, you will likely have more joy for the rest of the day.
Notice the small achievements.
We often forget to value ourselves. Did you choose to spend your lunch break taking a walk and getting some exercise? ____18____ Did you spend a few extra minutes giving a friend or co-worker a helping hand? Celebrate yourself for giving somebody the time to make their life easier. When we notice the little things in life we did well, it improves our mood and self-esteem (自尊).
____19____
This tip has a double benefit — when you celebrate someone else, both of you feel great! Start taking notice when your partner does little things, like taking out the trash, making the bed, or cleaning up the bathroom. When you celebrate someone else for the little things, they feel valued and will be more willing to help again.
Celebrate every evening.
Just as you begin every day in celebration, let’s end the day celebrating and reflecting upon the day that’s passed. Spend a few minutes over a cup of tea, or lying in bed, giving thanks for all the blessings in your day and your life. ____20____
A. Celebrate others.
B. Do something out of the ordinary.
C. I choose to fill my mind with positive things.

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon in southern Texas, 19-year-old Juan Mendoza was driving with his girlfriend when he saw something scary happen ahead of him. A car had been hit, spun (旋转) out of control, and stopped in the middle of the busy highway. While most drivers kept going, Mendoza didn’t hesitate. “I thought they could have kids,” Mendoza later shared, thinking of his own younger brothers. “And I was like, I’m going to get them out.”
The car belonged to Juan O’Matta, who is about to turn 80, and his wife Adriana. They were going home from a doctor’s visit when the accident made their car spin into traffic. Smoke was coming from the broken car as they sat stuck inside.
Juan O’Matta remembers that moment very clearly. “Nobody stopped,” he said. “He was the only one who stopped.” The video from that day shows Mendoza, who works as a cook at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant, running straight into the road. He moved broken pieces of the car out of the way and helped pull the couple from their smoking car. “He was there at exactly the right time when we needed help,” Adriana said. “That’s why I call him my angel.”
At the scene, the O’Mattas never learned the young hero’s name. But they really wanted to thank the man who saved their lives. With help from CBS News reporter David Begnaud, they were finally able to meet Mendoza again. Their emotional reunion happened at the Texas Roadhouse where Mendoza works. There were lots of hugs, tears, and sincere thanks.
The surprises didn’t stop there. Justin Back, president of Acadian Ambulance Service, attended the reunion and offered Mendoza a life-changing opportunity: a scholarship to go to EMT school to learn how to be an emergency medical technician (急救医疗技术员), along with a promise of a job after he finishes his training.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

A. Very surprised. B. Quite angry.
C. A little sad. D. Really tired.
6. What helped Warden rebuild her life?
A. Years of hardship. B. Help from the food store.
C. Winning the lottery early. D. Her mother’s love and values.
7. Which of the following can best describe Warden?
A. Kind and grateful. B. Rich and proud.
C. Brave and calm. D. Smart and careful.
B 5. A 6. D 7. A

B 13. A 14. D 15. C

Start your day as a celebration.
Celebrate the fact that you are alive. 【
而闻名”,需要用be known for来表达。
whether...or...

Changes Brought by Modern Technology in Students’ Life
Modern technology has greatly changed students’ life. To begin with, it brings huge convenience. We can look up learning materials online anytime and take online courses, which greatly improves study efficiency.
However, its downsides cannot be ignored. Many students get addicted to short videos or online games, wasting lots of study time. Besides, over-reliance on search tools weakens their independent thinking ability.
As far as I’m concerned, we should treat technology wisely. We should make good use of its advantages for study, while staying away from meaningless online entertainment. Only in this way can technology truly serve us well.

When Mendoza heard the offer, he was very surprised and thankful. He shared that he had always wanted to help people in emergencies but never thought he could get real training. “This is a real dream come true for me,” he said with a bright smile. He promised to work very hard in school to become a good EMT and help many more people in the future. His family, girlfriend, and co-workers all felt very proud of him and his brave heart. They knew this was just the beginning of his meaningful journey.
The O’Mattas were also deeply moved by this turn of events. They were happy to see the young man who saved them get such a wonderful chance for his future. “Kindness comes back to you,” Adriana said warmly. They decided to keep in touch with Mendoza and cheer for him as he starts his new journey, even planning to attend his graduation.
