The oceans we see today are beautifully blue, but it wasn't always like this.Long
ago,for over 2 billion years,Earth's earliest oceans had a green colour.This discovery
helps us understand Earth's past and may even help in finding life on other planets.
About 4.5 billion years ago,Earth became a planet. But the first life forms didn't
appear until around 800 million years later. Before life, the planet was covered by large
oceans with deep-sea hot springs. These springs sent out a lot of ferrous iron()into
the water..Around4 billion years ago, cyanobacteria(蓝细菌),one of the first living
things, started to do oxygenic photosynthesis(光合作用).Modern plants use chlorophyll
(叶绿素)for photosynthesis,.while ancient cyanobacteria used phycobilins(藻胆素)to
collect sunlight.Their growth led to the Great Oxidation Event about 2.4 billion years
ago, when oxygen began to build up in the air and changed how life developed over time.
Scientists had wondered why cyanobacteria needed phycobilins.A team led by Taro
Matsuo studied this.Using computers, they found that as cyanobacteria produced more
oxygen,it reacted with the iron in the ocean,Ferrous iron turned into ferric iron(三价铁离
)which can't break up in water. It formed rust-like things that took in blue and red
light, leaving green light to reflect. So the oceans looked green.Cyanobacteria developed
into phycobilins to take in green light and survive in these iron-rich,green oceans.
Matsuo wasn't sure about the "green ocean"idea at first. In 2021,he was doubtful.
But after years of research and a field study in 2023 on Iwo Island, where the water had a
green shinning due to iron hydroxides, his doubt turned into belief.
This study isn't just about Earth.Matsuo says that green oceans, which might be
brighter and easier to see from far away, could help astronomers look for water on other
planets.Instead of only looking for blue, they can consider green as a sign too.
32.What colour were Earth's oceans at first?
A.Blue.
B.Green.
C.Red.
D.Gray.
33.How did ancient cyanobacteria get sunlight?
A.By using phycobilins.
B.By using chlorophyll.
C.By using ferrous iron.
D.By using oxygen.
34.How did Matsuo feel about "green ocean"at last?
A.Doubtful.
B.Unclear.
C.Unconcerned.
D.Supportive.
35.What is the study's wider meaning?
A.Finding life on Earth.
B.Changing ocean colours.
C.Searching for water in outer space.
D.Protecting ocean animals.

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon in southern Texas,19-year-old Juan Mendoza was
driving with his girlfriend when he saw something scary happen ahead of him.A car had
been hit,spun()out of control, and stopped in the middle of the busy highway. While
most drivers kept going,Mendoza didn't hesitate."I thought they could have kids,
Mendoza later shared, thinking of his own younger brothers."And I was like,I'm going to
get them out..”
The car belonged to Juan O'Matta, who is about to turn 80,and his wife Adriana.
They were going home from a doctor's visit when the accident made their car spin into
traffic.Smoke was coming from the broken car as they sat stuck inside.
Juan O'Matta remembers that moment very clearly."Nobody stopped,"he said."He
was the only one who stopped."The video from that day shows Mendoza, who works as a
cook at a Texas Roadhouse restaurant, running straight into the road.He moved broken
pieces of the car out of the way and helped pull the couple from their smoking car."He was
there at exactly the right time when we needed help,"Adriana said."That's why I call him
my angel.”
At the scene, the O'Mattas never learned the young hero's name. But they really
wanted to thank the man who saved their lives. With help from CBS News reporter David
Begnaud, they were finally able to meet Mendoza again.Their emotional reunion happened
at the Texas Roadhouse where Mendoza works. There were lots of hugs, tears, and
sincere thanks.
The surprises didn't stop there.Justin Back, president of Acadian Ambulance
Service,attended the reunion and offered Mendoza a life-changing opportunity:a
scholarship to go to EMT school to learn how to be an emergency medical technician(
医7技术员),along with a promise of a job after he finishes his training.
