On March 11, 2011, a terrible earthquake hit Japan. It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. The earthquake happened under the sea, so it also caused a huge tsunami.
When the earthquake started, Yuki was at school. She was in her classroom with her classmates. Their teacher immediately told everyone to get under their desks. “Drop, cover, and hold on!” the teacher shouted. Yuki felt scared, but she did as she was told. The shaking lasted for about six minutes. It felt like a very long time.
After the shaking stopped, the teacher led everyone to the playground. That’s when they heard the warning on the loudspeaker: “Tsunami coming! Move to higher ground!” The school was near the coast, so they had to act fast. Yuki and her classmates ran up the hill behind their school. They could hear the sirens (警报) wailing all around them.
From the hill, Yuki looked back and saw something she would never forget. A huge wall of water was coming toward the town. It washed away cars, houses, and everything in its path. Yuki cried when she saw her neighborhood disappear under the water.
Yuki and her family were lucky. They endured because they listened to the warnings and moved to high ground quickly. But many people were not so lucky. The disaster taught Yuki an important lesson: nature is powerful, and we must always be prepared.

“Nonsense,” said Marilla. “Anne is a really good plain name.” She then explained, “We need a boy to help Matthew on the farm. A girl is no use to us.”
At supper, Anne was too sad to eat. She said she was in “the depths of despair (绝望).”
Later, when Anne was sent to bed, Marilla and Matthew discussed the situation. Marilla was determined that the girl must be sent back.
