Walking backward also makes you watch your steps. It helps old people improve their sense of balance. Some research even suggests that walking backward can improve people’s ability to solve problems or remember information.
Many sports such as tennis and football train players to walk and run backward, for players often need to move backward in games. And because it helps make muscles strong while putting less stress on the knees, backward running is also used to help reduce or get better from sports injuries.
In fact, studies have shown that walking backward can reduce pain and help with problems in people’s knees, feet and lower back. And doctors often recommend it as exercise for older people experiencing joint (关节) pain.
But how can you walk backward safely without hitting things? If you always look back, you will have a sore neck.

The teenager began his mountain climbing journey in January 2023. The sport taught him valuable lessons, and the most important one for him was to respect nature.
After returning to base camp, Li Haorong kowtowed (叩头) toward the mountain three times. He wanted to thank Qomolangma for letting him return safely and teaching him so many lessons.
This climb happened during the first spring mountain climbing season. Before trying to reach the top, Li arrived at base camp and received training to fit the terrible environment. He climbed from the 5,200-meter base camp to Camp 1 at 7,028 meters.
Thanks to a short period of good spring weather, the team set off for the peak (顶峰) from base camp on Sunday. Training and close team friendship helped them move forward. Other team members reached the top between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.
The spring weather on the mountain changes quickly and is full of risks. Sudden temperature drops and heavy snow make climbing very hard, and falling rocks are another big danger.
The team ran into a snowstorm at 8,700 meters near the First, Second and Third Steps. They could hardly see the road, and the conditions became very difficult. Thanks to their efforts and teamwork, they got to the peak safely.
26. Which of the following can we put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 1?
A. He set up a club to share his love for hiking.
B. He likes football, basketball and skiing at school.
C. He prepared for the climb by studying mountain information.
D. He finished this challenge as one of the youngest Chinese high school students.

Chinese culture is rich in traditions and customs. Many things you see, hear, or even taste in China carry special meanings!
Dragons
Dragons are scary monsters in most Western stories. However, people in China think dragons are a symbol of power and good luck. You can see them on money and clothes. People also use the character “dragon” in given names and idioms. For example, parents hope their kids can be as excellent as dragons. That’s why we call ourselves the children of the dragon.
The colour red
Red brings good luck and wealth in Chinese culture. During the Spring Festival, people put up red paper-cuts, couplets (对联)and lanterns. New couples also wear red on wedding days. Red has nice meanings in Western countries too. A red carpet stands for importance and red roses stand for love. Still, red sometimes means bad news for business. If a company is “in the red”, it loses money.
Lucky numbers
Some numbers sound like lucky Chinese words, so people love them. Six means everything goes well, two stands for good things in pairs, eight is for wealth and nine for long life. Four sounds like the word for death, so many people don’t use it in their phone numbers. Other countries have special numbers as well. Seven is lucky but thirteen is unlucky in America.
These are just a few Chinese cultural symbols. More special ones lie in food, plants and daily things.

Walking backward (倒走) has been very popular on TikTok. Many online stars say our body and mind can benefit from walking backward. It might sound astonishing, but actually health experts say it is really good for health!
