“What’s your zodiac sign (星座)?”
“It’s Virgo.”
“Then you must be an organized person.”
This kind of conversation is common among young people. They believe zodiac signs can show people’s personality. This idea actually comes from astrology (占星术). It’s an ancient belief system, saying the positions of stars and planets at your birth can shape your personality. Like the Chinese zodiac, astrology groups people into twelve zodiac signs. However, the Chinese zodiac is based on birth years, while astrology is based on birth dates. But is it real science? The answer is NO.
There are two main reasons for this myth (迷思). First, there is no physical connection between planets and our lives — planets are too far away to influence us. Second, the Barnum effect (巴纳姆效应) explains why people still believe in it: astrology uses unclear and positive words. They fit almost everyone. People usually remember the true words and forget the ones not fitting them, creating a false feeling of truth.
To prove this, physicist Shawn Carlson did a famous study. He asked 30 top experts in astrology to match people’s birth dates with their real personalities. However, the results showed these experts got only about 30 percent of them correct. This was no better than guessing. This study clearly showed that astrology cannot predict or describe true personality.
In short, astrology can be harmless fun and a good conversation starter. But it is not science. Never let a zodiac sign decide who you are. Your personality comes from what you are born with, your experiences, and the environment — not the stars.
56. What does astrology use to group people?
A. Birth years. B. Birth dates. C. Personalities.
57. According to the Barnum effect, why do people believe in astrology?
A. Because it gives exact and clear answers.
B. Because planets can influence people’s lives.
C. Because they focus on the words fitting them.
58. Why does the writer mention Shawn Carlson’s study?
A. To introduce how to do a scientific study.
B. To prove astrology is not based on science.
C. To show the experts get only a few things right.
59. According to the passage, what can influence personality?
① zodiac signs ② experiences ③ environment ④ stars
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④
60. In which part of the magazine can we read this passage?
A. B. C.

When you first see the cover of the English textbook, you may notice a high mountain. Have you ever wondered which mountain it is? This snow-covered mountain against the blue sky is Mount Kilimanjaro.
Mount Kilimanjaro stands in Tanzania, East Africa. As “the Roof of Africa”, it rises about 5,895 meters above sea level. This also explains why, although it lies close to the equator (赤道), its top is covered with snow. Clouds float around the mountain, making Mount Kilimanjaro look quiet and magical.
What makes the mountain more special is that it’s actually a big volcano (火山)! Many years ago, hot lava and ash came out from the earth. When they cooled, they formed hard layers. Over a very long time, these layers built up and made the huge volcanic mountain we see today. Mount Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones (火山锥). Two of them are dead, while Kibo, the highest volcanic cone, is “sleeping” now and can wake up some day.
This mysterious volcanic mountain has a powerful call for adventurers. Thousands of climbers from all over the world visit Mount Kilimanjaro every year to challenge themselves and enjoy its amazing views. For these climbers, the journey is really hard because of the thin air and freezing weather. Still, they try to reach the top. It is a deep exploration of nature and a great test of physical strength.
It’s a pity that the beauty of this place may not last forever. The weather around the world is getting warmer every single year. Over 80 percent of the snow has gone since 1912 and scientists predict we may see no ice by 2050.
Now, when you look at the cover of your book again, you will see not only a volcanic mountain, but also a symbol of human spirit and a reminder of environmental protection.
B.任务型阅读 根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
Countries across the world are spending plenty of dollars and lots of time on different space tasks, whether to the moon or other planets much further away. Some people argue that we should stop wasting time and money exploring space. Instead, we should feed the world’s poor and find ways to solve other problems, such as pollution and serious diseases. However, others hold a different view.
Firstly, exploring space has already made a difference in the fight against world hunger. A large number of satellites (卫星) record the information of land and weather. Then they send it to scientists on Earth. After careful study, the scientists can provide useful advice for farmers. As a result, it has helped farmers in its efforts to grow enough food to feed Earth’s increasing population.
Secondly, space exploration has already encouraged improvements in technologies that benefit us all. For example, space technologies have helped the research and development of different types of new material. They have also helped factories make better machines that doctors regularly use. Today, people widely use space technologies in all kinds of industries, and everyday products, such as smartphone cameras (照相机), are changing our lives.
Finally, sending astronauts into space has helped people to think about the world’s problems and even to find ways to solve them. Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea made people realize that we are running low on natural resources (资源). In order to provide for such a quickly increasing population, scientists are trying to find other planets that could one day be our new home.
In short, exploring space provides the world with many different benefits. Therefore, it should continue so as to provide new and better ways to solve people’s short-term and long-term problems.
