According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there are five seasons each year—spring, summer, late Summer, autumn and winter. There are also five elements (元素)—Metal (金), Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. Each goes with a season and helps explain how nature changes. In summer, we enjoy longer days, more sunlight and rain and higher temperature. Summer is a season for growing and it has to do with warmth, heat, growth, joy and excitement. So it belongs to the ★ element.
TCM values the balance (平衡) of yin and yang. The ancient TCM saying “Nourish yang in spring and summer, and yin in autumn and winter.” reminds us that summer is a good season to make ourselves thinner, taller and happier. If a person doesn’t have enough yang, he may have cold hands and feet, feel hard to lose weight or have a sore back.
There are ways to protect yang and control heat in our body to make the most of summer. For example, you can drink plenty of water. In TCM we believe that Mother Nature provides the right kinds of food in the right season. So we advise people to eat seasonal foods for better health. Besides, doing outdoor activities can be a good choice. With longer days and shorter nights, many people go to bed and get up later in summer. However, TCM suggests that we should get up earlier to get more yang of daytime. Resting at midday during 1 to 3 p.m. is also helpful.
On the afternoon of June 30th, some volunteer doctors who practice TCM will go to Healthy Neighborhood Center. They will help you to make a personal summer health plan by using TCM. If you have any health problems, please ask them for help. For more information, you can visit www.Healthy Neighborhood.com.

At my young age, I learned that what people said wasn’t always what they meant. I remember in a ____36____ meeting at my primary school, the teacher told my mother with a smile, “She’s doing fine. There’s still room for improvement ____37____.” At first, I was really pleased. But the more I thought about the teacher’s words, the more I ____38____ that “fine” wasn’t actually very positive at all. What she really wanted to say was that I needed to work harder.
This became my first lesson in understanding the true meanings behind words. And I became quite good at understanding euphemisms (委婉语) later as I found them a part of my family’s ____39____. When my father stopped going to the office at the age of 40, my mother told everyone that he ____40____ at home and making some time for the family. I didn’t understand it at first, because we saw him even ____41____ for he stayed in his room all day. It took me a while to understand that my father had actually lost his job. After this, I began to notice that my mother used other euphemisms more often at home.
I notice these euphemisms in school too. Every time I chat with a friend who I ____42____ out of touch with for a long time, we would say, “We must have dinner together one day soon.” But unsurprisingly, “one day soon” never happens. Those words are just a way of showing ____43____.
I found languages ____44____: they have different parts, the meanings of words and the meanings behind the words. The next time you are listening to someone, take care of the words that they are using. Remember, what they are saying may not ____45____ be what they really mean.

___50___ But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. In Zhangye City, northwest China’s Gansu Province, there are some beautiful hills called Colorful Zhangye Danxia. It’s one of China’s special Danxia landforms (地貌). With little rain all year round, few plants can live there and there are few rivers. However, when the hot sun shines on the land, the mountains show many colors like red, yellow, orange, green, and white, much like paintings.
Where do these colors come from? Long ago, this area was a huge lake. Rivers carried sand and small stones into the lake. Over millions of years, the sand and small stones were pushed together and turned into hard colorful rocks. Later, the earth moved the land up and the lake dried up. And wind and rain have made the rocks look like what we see today.
These days, it has become so popular that it interests lots of visitors every year. It’s a great place for both enjoying the beauty of nature and learning about geography.
On the other side of the world, in Australia, lies another amazing place called Kakadu National Park. Once ancient seas covered this land. Because of the earth’s movement, the seas disappeared when the land rose up. And heavy seasonal rains have changed the land into different kinds of landforms over millions of years. Large rocks reach for the sky like walls. At sunrise, they change from grey to shining gold. When the sun goes down, they turn from yellow to burning red.
Kakadu is a treasure box of human history, too. For tens of thousands of years, First Australians have lived among these rocks. They painted pictures of creation, spirits, animals, and daily life on the rocks. These paintings let us see what life was like long ago.
Zhangye Danxia and Kakadu are like nature’s two amazing artworks They remind us that every part of our planet has its own beauty. Both show the cultures of their lands. Let’s take care of these treasures and live in peace with our amazing Earth!

根据“In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees...”
根据“But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job.”

Zhangye Danxia and Kakadu are like nature’s two amazing artworks. They remind us that every part of our planet has its own beauty. Both show the cultures of their lands. Let’s take care of these treasures and live in peace with our amazing Earth!
1 have shaped special lands, turning them into artworks of the earth.

On a hot day, many people like to go to the beach. Some beaches, however, are not safe for swimming. If the water is not clean or the waves are too big, it isn’t safe to swim.
There are sharks in the water. That’s why at these beaches, people put out shark nets. They help stop too many sharks from getting close to the beach. Sharks can still swim under or around the net. But if they try to swim through, they will get caught. Sharks can die if they are not cut free. Shark nets don’t just catch sharks. They can catch other sea animals, too. Even a whale has been caught in a shark net. It took many people to get it free. Some animals are not so lucky. They drown (淹没) in the nets. One day, a whale was swimming with her baby. The baby whale got caught in a shark net. The mother whale tried to get the baby whale to come with her. The baby couldn’t get free from the net. The mother had to watch it die.
Many people think shark nets should not be used. Sharks are important in the ocean. They eat sick and dead fish. They help to keep the ocean clean. Sharks are the lions and the tigers of the sea. Some people think there are other ways to keep the beach safe for people. Shark spotters are people who watch for sharks. They go to a high place. Then they can look down on the beach. Lucy has a good friend, Jessica. She loves singing a lot but she is far from excellence. Recently, their school held a singing competition. Jessica really wanted to have a try. As her best friend, Lucy surely supported her and said: "You can make it! " As expected, Jessica tried out for it and prepared hard. But unluckily, she failed and got the lowest score. She even felt that some students laughed at her. Now, Jessica feels down and refuses to talk with anyone. And Lucy feels sad and guilty (自责的), because she didn't tell Jessica the truth that she was not good at singing.

【答案】One possible version
In my opinion, Lucy doesn’t need to feel too guilty.
First, her support was out of kindness and friendship, which gave Jessica the courage to try. Second, everyone has the right to pursue their hobbies, and Jessica’s attempt was a valuable experience. Third, it’s hard to predict the result accurately.
Here are my suggestions. Lucy should talk to Jessica sincerely, comfort her and remind her of the progress she made during practice. Also, Lucy can encourage Jessica to keep singing for enjoyment rather than just for competition.
