China is a nation of etiquette (礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable (热情好客的) people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they will be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests with a big meal. They always present more food than the guests can eat. On the table, the guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps the thing that surprises Western guests most is that the Chinese host likes to pick food for visitors, which won’t happen at Western tables. The Chinese family go out of their way to make you feel at home. When you finish eating, the host usually says, “It seems that you didn’t eat much. Please have more.” Although you tell them you are full, they still put more food in your bowl.

Like many parents, Makenzie always taught and guided her daughter and helped her face life’s challenges. But one day, in a surprising moment, things changed. Makenzie learnt an important lesson from her 10-year-old daughter Emma during a simple walk on the beach.
Emma picked up some rocks and started a simple activity. First, she asked her mother to choose a big rock. “This rock means the worst thing that happened to you,” she said. Then she asked her mother to pick more rocks (岩石) for other bad experiences. Together, they built a tall tower with the rocks. The rocks on the tower became smaller and smaller, showing that even small hurts can still leave bad effects.
Next, Emma added tiny rocks around the tower to keep it steady (稳固的). She explained the reason. The tiny rocks mean that small acts of care and love can help people stay strong in difficult times. Makenzie began to understand and nodded. “What a smart idea!” she said. Suddenly, Emma pushed the tower down. “But we can also let the bad things go and start fresh,” she said.
Then Emma smiled and gave Makenzie a new flat (平滑的) rock. “Just think about the best thing that ever happened to you, Mum,” she said. This time, they began building a new tower with flatter rocks. Unlike the first one, the tower stood stronger and steadier.
Makenzie realized the important lesson from her daughter. When we focus on the positives (积极的) and let go of the negatives (消极的), we feel stronger and more peaceful, and we can start again and move forward with hope. What a great lesson from a 10-year-old girl!

A. d → a → b → c B. c → b → a → d C. d → b → a → c D. c → a → b → d
( ) 29. Which of the following can best describe Emma?
A. She loved collecting rocks. B. She was wise and thoughtful.
C. She was never afraid of problems. D. She always listened to her mother.
( ) 30. What does the writer want to tell us?

During the Jin Dynasty (265 — 420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp (灯). It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this. Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same period also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun Kang used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of these kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit. Their stories inspired the Chinese idiom nang ying ying xue (囊萤映雪), or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.
In the past, people had a harder time studying than we do now. They had to copy books by hand because books were not common back then. For poor families, paper and writing brushes were too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these conditions did not stop young minds from pursuing (追求) knowledge. With determination (决心), we can find ways to learn in difficult situations.

As young people in the new age, we have lots of social duties. First, we should follow good rules in daily life, like not throwing rubbish and saying hello to people politely. Besides, doing volunteer work is useful. We can talk about our school life and visit old people and kids. What’s more, we must do things to protect the environment. For example, we should turn off lights to save electricity and form eco - friendly living habits. I believe these small acts show our sense of social duty.
