Hello, everyone. Today, I want to share how I grew from a failure. Once, I failed an exam. I was sad to see the bad result of the English exam. I tried many ways to remember words before, but none of them worked. I didn’t know what to do, so I asked my teacher for help. She encouraged me to learn words from stories. Then I started to read stories every day.
Bit by bit, my English improved, and I got a sense of achievement. Now I know clearly that failure lasts just a moment. Facing it positively, I can find a better way out.

Hello, everyone. Today, I want to share how I grew from a failure. Once, I lost a competition. During the speaking competition, I was nervous and forgot words. I felt disappointed at myself and couldn’t help crying. “Take it easy! You write such a good speech. Why not try something new, like writing?” My friend Betty suggested. I followed her advice and practised writing. Soon, I fell completely in love with it.
Now I’ve won several writing competitions and found confidence. I understand that failures may guide us to hidden talents. When one door closes, another opens. Life is waiting for us with surprises.
That’s all. Thanks for listening! (86 words)

When you look at the picture on the left, you might think it was drawn by a little kid. In fact, this cute and funny picture was created by Dav Pilkey, a well-known American cartoonist (漫画家). Why did he write and draw in such a special way? Actually, it was closely connected to his early experiences.
As a kid, Dav often got into trouble because of dyslexia (阅读障碍) and ADHD (多动症). Unlike other kids, he found it difficult to read and write. In class, he couldn’t stay quiet or understand what teachers said. He always moved around and interrupted his classmates. As a result, his teacher had to make him sit outside the classroom alone. But he didn’t let this bring him down. Instead, he spent the lonely time doing what he loved most-drawing and creating stories.
That was how he created his famous books like Captain Underpants and Dog Man. His dyslexia made him write accessible stories with fewer words and shorter sentences. For example, most pages in Dog Man have no more than 20 words. Also, his ADHD gave him a creative mind. He created many funny and special characters. He even added some spelling mistakes to make his books more interesting and real. Therefore, his books are popular among kids who don’t like reading.
Dav’s special experiences have finally led to his great success. Today, at 60, he still keeps writing and drawing. He hopes to encourage more kids to accept their own weaknesses. Just as his story shows: The things that make us different can be the things that make us wonderful.
19. How does the writer start the text?
A. By telling stories. B. By showing a picture.
C. By listing numbers. D. By giving a famous saying.
20. Why did Dav’s teacher make him sit outside the classroom?
A. He refused to read aloud. B. He spent too much time drawing.
C. He wanted to study alone. D. He had trouble being quiet in class.
21. What does the underlined word “accessible” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Warm. B. Easy. C. Common. D. Similar.
22. What’s the main reason for Dav’s success?
A. He was confident in himself. B. He got help from his classmates.
C. He worked hard at his studies. D. He turned weaknesses into strengths.
C
Lively birds sing sweetly in the trees. Under the blue sky, the fields shine like the sun. The wind blows, sending sweet smells into the air. This is the living landscape of Sanyang Wetland, Wenzhou.
What makes this wetland so alive and beautiful? The secret lies in its ancient wisdom. This wisdom guided the villagers’ farming activities hundreds of years ago. They grew oranges, rice, and water chestnuts (菱角) together in the same place. They found these plants helped each other. Orange trees gave shade (树荫), and rice roots protected the soil (土壤) from washing away. Water chestnuts grew in the water and kept it clean. This smart way of farming saved land and produced more food. It allowed the villagers to live with nature.
Today, people still follow this wisdom with new ideas. To keep the water clean, scientists use modern tools to clear away bad plants and test water. Also, special “floating (漂浮) gardens” are put in the water. Their plants’ roots take in dirty things and make the water cleaner. What’s more, people build safe homes for animals. For example, “insect hotels” are made for insects to hide, and “ecobird islands” are built to keep people away so birds can live safely there.
Thanks to these new ideas, Sanyang Wetland is now home to 156 kinds of birds, 794 kinds of plants and 303 kinds of insects. Every year, thousands of students come here to stay close to nature. They watch birds, study plants and pick oranges. There is also a museum for them to learn about wetland wisdom.
By mixing ancient wisdom with new ideas, people have made Sanyang Wetland a wonderful land for the city. This truly shows how people can live well with nature.
23. Which picture shows the landscape of Sanyang Wetland in Paragraph 1?
A. B. C. D.
24. What is the ancient wisdom of Sanyang Wetland?
A. Growing three plants together. B. Using rice roots as food.
C. Protecting animals with shade. D. Cleaning soil with plants.
25. How do “floating gardens” help the wetland?
A. They clear away bad plants. B. They keep people away from birds.
C. They give insects places to hide. D. They take in dirty things from water.
26. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Sanyang Wetland: A Safe Home for Animals
B. Sanyang Wetland: Traditional Farming Wisdom
C. Sanyang Wetland: Old Wisdom Meets New Ideas
D. Sanyang Wetland: Modern Science Helps Nature

Nature Week:
Different Ways to Explore Nature
Posted by Mr Smith on 23 June, 2026
Last week was our school’s Nature Week. Students tried different ways to explore nature, such as searching for information, watching carefully, doing experiments (实验) and so on. Here are two students’ experiences of exploring nature. 31
What secrets are hidden in this small stone?
32 One day, he found a small yellow stone. It looked like amber. He knew amber came from ancient trees. Did that mean his hometown was once a forest? With a magnifier, he watched the stone closely. Inside, he saw a tiny insect. Could it be a new species from millions of years ago? Later, a biologist proved David’s guesses were right. The amber unlocked the secrets of nature. How amazing!
33
Mary did an experiment to explore nature. She wondered why green leaves turn yellow in autumn. Mary asked her brother about it. 34 So she put green leaves in alcohol (酒精), and then put a paper strip inside. After a few minutes, the paper showed green, yellow, and orange. These colours hide in leaves! When the green disappears in autumn, the other colours will show.
