The "Sugar Pill" Grandpa
Gu Fangzhou, known as the "Sugar Pill Grandpa", saved millions of Chinese children from polio (小儿麻痹症).
In 1955, a terrible polio outbreak happened in China. Many children were paralyzed (瘫痪). At that time, Gu was a young doctor. He decided to find a cure.
He and his team worked in a tiny laboratory. To test the safety of the vaccine, Gu took the risk of trying it on himself first. Later, to test if it worked on children, he even fed the vaccine to his own son secretly. "If I don't dare to try it on my own child, how can I ask others to believe me?" he said.
