Once in a village lived a rich father. He was very worried because his son Tommy had many bad habits. The father tried many ways to help Tommy give them up, but nothing worked.
One day, a wise man came to the village. The father went to see him at once and asked for help. The wise man listened carefully and told him to bring Tommy the next morning.
The next day, the father came with Tommy. The wise man took the boy for a walk in the forest. After walking for a short time, he stopped and pointed at a small plant, “Please help me pull (拔出) it out!” he said. Tommy did it easily.
They walked on. Soon the wise man stopped again and pointed at a bigger plant. “Pull it out!” Tommy pulled hard and the plant came out.
Then the wise man pointed to an apple tree, “Now pull the apple tree out!” he said. Tommy held the tree and tried very hard, but it didn’t move at all. “It’s too difficult for me,” said Tommy, feeling bad.

根据文章第一段第二句“He was very worried because his son Tommy had many bad habits.”
根据文章第五段“Tommy held the tree and tried very hard, but it didn’t move at all.”
C
We usually think fish can’t talk. But there are many sounds under the sea. In fact, scientists believe that almost all sea animals—about 250,000 kinds—can “speak” to each other. “If we listen carefully underwater, we can hear animals all around us,” the UK scientist Steve Simpson said.
In recent (最近的) years, scientists have used sound recorders to catch fish “voices.” Now there are thousands of recorders in the sea. They help scientists match sounds with sea life.
A healthy coral reef (珊瑚礁) is a noisy place in the sea. Scientists can tell if it’s healthy just by listening. A healthy coral reef is full of small clicks (咔嚓声) from shrimps (小虾). When some coral reefs died, they became very quiet. After people worked to help the reefs grow again, scientists heard the animals come back-so the reefs got noisy again!
By listening to the ocean, scientists are starting to understand sea animals’ “ways to talk”. Big clownfish make short “chirp” sounds when they run after small clownfish. They do this to show they are powerful. A damselfish can make a “pop” sound to drive away other fish-by opening and closing its mouth very fast. Mother dolphins use a special voice to talk to their babies. They say “I’m here” to make the little dolphins feel happy.
Scientists are building an online library called the Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds (GLUBS,全球水下生物声音库). It will monitor sea animals by getting sounds from all over the world to see if they are healthy. People need to understand these underwater sounds before the animals die out.
11. What do scientists use recorders to do?
A. To talk with fish. B. To get sounds from sea life.
C. To make coral reefs healthy. D. To look for new kinds of sea life.
12. Why is the coral reef a noisy place?
A. Because scientists work there. B. Because many shrimps live there.
C. Because many fishes talk to coral reefs. D. Because the coral reef can make sounds.
13. How many “ways to talk” are there in the fourth paragraph?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five
14. What does the underlined word “monitor” probably mean?
A. feed B. count C. watch D. follow
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Sounds in the Sea B. Records of the Fishes
C. Lives under the Water D. Voices from the Scientists
B 12. B 13. B 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“scientists have used sound recorders to catch fish ‘voices’”可知,科学家使用录音器是为了捕捉鱼类的“声音”,即获取海洋生物发出的声音。
根据第三段“A healthy coral reef is full of small clicks from shrimps”可知,健康的珊瑚礁充满了小虾发出的咔嚓声,说明噪音主要来源于居住在那里的小虾。

A. To talk with fish. B. To get sounds from sea life.
C. To make coral reefs healthy. D. To look for new kinds of sea life.
