With a schoolbag on my back and a carefully packed lunch, I found myself wondering whether I would stand out for all the wrong reasons. Beneath the nervous excitement, however, was a deeper concern: Never will my guards be down for the future! Across the UK, this feeling is becoming commonplace. More and more adults are returning to education, in search of stable work, meaningful or simply sustainable. Rapid changes in technology, combined with economic uncertainty, have made many career paths less reliable than they once were. The game is not in the bag for many. After two decades spent working towards seniority in the creative industries, it was kind of discouraging to find myself applying for roles far below my experience and pay grade. Leadership jobs in media were thin on the ground, and after five years freelancing (自由职业), I struggled to get back in. So I parked my ego and sent my CV out for retail and admin roles — the sort of jobs I had last done in my early twenties. Gradually and clearly, that short-term fixes were not enough. Rather than continuing to chase shrinking opportunities, I decided to retrain in psychotherapy. This choice was not an escape, but a watershed: a practical step towards a profession that values human connection and long-term purpose. Looking back, returning to university has reshaped how I see both work and success. Studying again has restored a sense of direction that is not decided only by the market. It has taught me that starting over does not mean failure, but adjustment. 24. How did the author feel about his own state in the beginning? A. A sense of youthful anticipation. B. A feeling of profound insecurity. C. An eagerness for academic challenges. D. A desire for new knowledge. 25. Why did the author apply for retail and admin roles? A. To accept reality more humbly. B. To return to jobs of his youth. C. To regain lost professional dignity. D. To pursue a new personal interest. 26. What does the underlined word “watershed” in paragraph 4 mean? A. turning point. B. difficult choice. C. temporary relief. D. final goal. 27. What does the author’s experience show? A. Every cloud has a silver line. B. All roads lead to Rome. C. It is never too late to learn. D. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. C Mika Sipponen, a materials chemist from a European University, went for a swim in a lake. Afterwards, he noticed his hair felt smooth without any hair product. The brownish water was rich in plant matter, leading him to wonder if lignin, which is found in wood — could help condition hair. His team mixed lignin with coconut oil, and it worked. Experiments showed that the mixture smoothed hair and reduced the force that it took to drag a comb through it. Since lignin can be sourced from wood waste, hair products made from it would be more environmentally friendly than those made with standard petrochemical-based ingredients. Their research is just one recent example of efforts to “green” hair care products, many of which have ingredients from non-renewable petrochemicals or that don’t degrade in the environment. A growing number of consumers want products that have a smaller environmental footprint and are made from ingredients they perceive as being milder on the body. “Consumer awareness and pressure have made a real impact on the hair care market,” says Alexa Friedman, an epidemiologist from an environmental research organization. Effective hair care relies on surface chemistry. Healthy hair has a thin oily layer, while damaged hair has rough scales. Many conditioners use positively charged polymers to stick to damaged hair, but these often come from non-renewable petrochemicals and may build up in the environment. Lignin offers a natural alternative. Scientists have modified lignin to make it positively charged and water-soluble. The approach doesn’t entirely avoid petrochemicals, which are the source of the chemical modifier for lignin, but it’s a good step. Still, Friedman cautions that it’s hard to know how green a product is because there is little accountability for claims. And even bio-based materials from renewable sources may still harm the environment. Yet even though consumers seek greener alternatives, the most important criterion for them is still whether a product works. “The first thing is performance,” Mika Sipponen says. “That’s what people look for.” Scientists, in those dirty ponds, and forests, are looking too. 28. What did Sipponen’s team find in their experiments? A. Lignin can be used to create eco-friendly hair products. B. Lignin from wood waste is beneficial to the environment. C. Lignin mixed with coconut oil can smooth people’s hair. D. The mixture of lignin and oil fails to increase combing friction. 29. Why do scientists look for alternative hair care products? A. Bio-based materials are more affordable to produce. B. Conventional ingredients may damage the environment. C. Traditional products are less effective in smoothing hair. D. Consumers are dissatisfied with current product performance. 30. What is Friedman’s attitude towards the green trend in the hair care market? A. Highly critical. B. Completely approving. C. Totally indifferent. D. Cautiously optimistic. 31. What can we infer regarding the future hair products from the last paragraph? A. They will be strictly regulated by environmental standards. B. They will soon completely replace petrochemical-based ones. C. They balance environmental benefits with product performance. D. They are less likely to be accepted by the majority of consumers. D Since late 2022, more netizens have started using large language models, a popular type of AI tool, which have skyrocketed, to access knowledge. It is no brainer that their appeal is obvious: Ask a question, get a polished synthesis (合成品), and move on — it feels like effortless learning. New research, in contrast, indicates this ease may have a cost. Just as a leading figure in the field of large language models uttered, no revolution comes without a price. A series of studies revealed that people using such AI tools to research a topic develop shallower knowledge compared to those using a standard web search engine. In the experiments, participants were asked to learn about something and were randomly assigned to do so by using either an LLM or the “old-fashioned way”. Afterwards, they were asked to write advice to a friend on the topic based on what they learned. The data revealed a consistent pattern: People who learned about a topic through an LLM versus web search felt that they learned less, invested less effort in writing their advice, which ultimately was shorter and less factual. Some independent readers who did not know how it was produced, when rating this advice, found it to be less informative and less helpful, and consequently they were less likely to adopt it. Why so? There is an old saying that goes, it is hard to read the label when you are inside the jar. Few know why this happens. A core principle of learning is that people learn best when they are actively engaged. With a common web search, you must evaluate search results, click links, and synthesize information from different sources. This active process strengthens understanding. Getting a ready-made synthesis from an AI, on the other hand, requires less cognitive struggle, which can lead to a more superficial grasp of the topic. However, to be clear, we do not believe the solution to these issues is to avoid using LLMs, especially given the undeniable benefits they offer in many contexts. Rather, our message is that people simply need to become smarter or more strategic users of LLMs. 32. Why are AI tools considered attractive for learning according to paragraph 1? A. Their constant technical updates. B. Their perceived efficiency and ease. C. Their guarantee of deeper understanding. D. Their access to a large amount of information. 33. What feature did LLM-generated advice share in the studies? A. It was longer and more comprehensive. B. It contained more guesses or predictions. C. It lacked factual support and enough details. D. It was rated favorably for its innovative approach. 34. Why does the author mention “it is hard to read the label when you are inside the jar”? A. To explain why people prefer using AI tools. B. To illustrate that users are unaware of the learning cost. C. To show that AI tools are hard to evaluate. D. To emphasize the complexity of language models. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Rise of AI Assistants. B. The Value of Active Learning. C. The Wise Use of AI Assistants. D. The Cost of AI learning. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Schools across the country have invested billions of dollars in tablets, laptops, and high-speed internet with the expectation that more technology means better learning. 36 A large body of evidence demonstrates that the issue is complicated, with more downsides than most people anticipate. Take, for example, an international study conducted by a global educational research organization. In it, researchers examined standardized testing data from 15-year-olds across dozens of countries. They found students using technology the most tended to perform worse than those using it moderately. A separate analysis revealed that the more hours American students spent daily on computers doing English language arts, the lower their reading scores. 37 Another research found that higher levels of screen time at ages two and three were significantly associated with poorer performance on developmental screening tests at ages 3 and 5. But researchers say the evidence demonstrates that technology can also be used to promote learning. For example, a well-known educational research project found that using computers for research is associated with higher reading scores. 38 How technology is used also matters. 39 Instead of just putting devices in students’ hands, these nations used technology to support teacher collaboration, professional development, and lesson-sharing, which saw better outcomes than those that focused primarily on student-facing devices. 40 To effectively support student learning, the research shows that moderate levels of technology use that support broader educational goals work best. A. But what does the research show? B. And the reality is far from satisfying. C. The same holds true for younger children, too. D. Using technology in educational settings is complex. E. Researchers found students performed worse without electronic devices. F. And other researchers found some literacy and math apps do support learning. G. A global educational research group found some nations with top-performing students used technology differently. In long-distance running, athletes typically rely on coaches or experienced pacers for motivation. Growing up in an athletic family, she couldn’t imagine life without the sport. Her journey to college soccer, however, wasn’t easy. Because she attended a high school with a weak soccer program, she never received many offers. She recalled corresponding with the New York University coach until she was ignored. “Senior fall was the one time I was struggling a lot,” she said. By that point, she had received only rejections and began to accept that she wouldn’t play college soccer. But her father, her biggest cheerleader, insisted she try out for one more school. He enrolled her in soccer camps to get her name out in the world. That last attempt turned fruitful when she was offered a spot on the Rochester roster. “I do believe everything happens for a reason,” she reflected. When Santangelo arrived in Rochester, the reality of college soccer set in immediately. Within her first season, the coaches moved her from her familiar midfield role to striker. The shift forced her to adapt quickly, but it also tested her confidence. “I pushed myself a little too far sometimes,” she admitted. “I forgot why I was doing what I was doing.” For the first time, soccer wasn’t just an outlet — it was a test of confidence, patience, and identity. Despite the pressure, Santangelo did well. She lived for the excitement, not the worry. To calm her pregame nervousness, she focused on her own potential performance rather than the other team. But one incident during her college career shook her deeply. During a match, her teammate Eileen fell to the ground after a serious injury. “The stands went silent, and she was just screaming,” Santangelo recalled. “I thought she broke every bone in her body.” The team stood frozen. Fear hung in the air. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Then, through the silence, one voice spoke. Later that season, Santangelo stepped into another new role — guiding the incoming freshman strikers. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
