I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t understand what it brought to me until I became an adult. It helped me learn more useful skills than the people who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at about 10 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough (面团). I thought it would be easy because I often saw my mom do it—just mix water and flour (面粉), right? Not quite! It was either too soft or too hard at first. But as I kept trying, I learned how to do it. Later, I cooked fried dishes and things like dumplings. Thanks to my cooking skills, I can eat anything I want. Now I cook every meal instead of buying food from the Internet. It saves money and I don’t have to wait for others to feed me.
Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. Though it was hard work, I learned a lot. For example, the part of a potato that has sprouts (芽) can be planted as a seed (种子).
I discussed it with others. Some might say we can learn these things from textbooks. But it can’t compare to the joy of doing it yourself. It brings a new way to look at the world.
This may be why I was so happy when I heard the news that China would have labor education Students in primary and middle schools should have at least one class every week from September 2022 to learn skills like cooking and cleaning. Trust me. These useful skills will help you for the rest of your life.
29. Which cooking skill did the writer learn first?
A. Making dough. B. Making dumplings.
C. Cooking eggs. D. Cutting vegetables.
30. How did the writer learn to plant vegetables?
A. By discussing it with others. B. By learning it at school.
C. By doing it in life. D. By reading a book about it.
31. What does the writer think of labor education?
A. It’s mainly about cooking and cleaning. B. It is necessary and helpful.
C. It should be adults’ job. D. It is useless but interesting.

What are the cultural differences between China and the West? You might be able to find the answer in Cao’s comics (漫画).
Cao was born in Beijing, but left home at 20 and studied and lived in the USA, the UK and France for over ten years. Seeing so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her drawing skills to show the differences that she saw. So she created Tiny Eyes Comics.
“My experience shows that although travel is much easier and faster today, the distance between cultures doesn’t shorten (缩短),” Cao said. She hopes to build a bridge and break down misunderstandings between different cultures. One of her cartoons shows what kind of water people drink in different countries. She draws three glasses of water:
The glass of water from the USA has ice;
The one from France is sparkling (起泡的);
The one from China is hot.
Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. “Her simple pictures played a big part in telling Chinese culture,” an Italian magazine Grazia reported.
Many foreign people say that Cao’s comics help them understand China, while Chinese living in other countries feel that there is someone understanding them well. This shows that Cao’s comics are truly meaningful.
Cao said that this voice is the biggest motivation for her to keep creating.

C. Comics Show Us How We Are Different. D. Different Ways of Thinking and Behaving.

Good news for primary and middle school students: You may get more holidays! This year, for the first time, the Government Work Report mentions “spring and autumn holidays for primary and middle school students”. It encourages schools to offer these holidays to students. “Spring and autumn holidays will be meaningful and relaxing —they can offer students more time to rest and enjoy their beautiful country,” Gao Jinfeng, the headmaster of a school in Jiangsu province, told China Education Daily.
To help make the breaks successful, other ways may also be introduced. For example, parents may enjoy more paid leave so they can spend time with their children during these holidays. Places such as museums and science centers may also open to students for free. It lets them take part in more social and educational activities.
With government support, students will have more time to relax and enjoy nature at its best. Some areas have already started piloting the policy (政策). In 2025, students in Zhejiang province began enjoying spring and autumn breaks first. Later, several cities in Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangdong and Hubei also introduced the policy. Most areas have the spring break around Tomb-Sweeping Day (清明) and the autumn break in November, usually close to a weekend.
In short, spring and autumn holidays for school students are a big change in education. They help move learning from only exams to all-round growth. With the help of families, schools and society, these holidays will let students grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.

1. C 2. A 3. A 4. D 5. C 6. B 7. D 8. C 9. A 10. B
根据but构成转折逻辑,前文写犯错,后文写持续练习,give up意为“放弃”,didn’t give up契合坚持练习的情节。give out分发,give back归还,give away赠送,均不符合犯错仍坚持的语境。
根据后文“the people who help us”以及介词to,be thankful to sb.
根据空后“to move forward”,push sb. to do sth.
while当……时,although虽然,as soon as一……
根据全文开篇“Growing up is a long journey full of challenges”,challenge表示“挑战”,与全文直面困难的主旨呼应。
When I was eight, I was shy and had no friends. I dreamed ____11____ having a horse as a friend. One day, Mum said, “Nancy, the rescue centre ____12____ (have) some homeless horses. Now they need some volunteers ____13____ (help) the horses.”
That weekend, Mum took ____14____ (I) to the rescue centre. I was so ____15____ (excite)! In the stable (马厩), I noticed a horse, much smaller than other horses, standing in the corner. “That’s Luna,” the worker said. “She’s shy. ____16____ she is not as good-looking as others, she gets little attention.” “But I think she’s beautiful,” I said.

The glass of water from the USA has ice;
The one from France is sparkling (起泡的);
The one from China is hot.
Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. “Her simple pictures played a big part in telling Chinese culture,” an Italian magazine Grazia reported.
