Wattpad: https://www.wattpad.com/
This platform is all about stories. It’s been around for a while since 2006 and its founders wanted readers to be able to download an app so they could read and chat about fiction shared by professional writers. It covers all sorts of writing, from romance, to fantasy, to historical.
Eliza-Mari Janse started using Wattpad in 2017 and it was the first place where she shared her work. “Wattpad is a wonderful place to be creative, unique and have complete freedom. Write professionally, just for fun or just try it out. You don’t have a deadline.”

In the early 20th century, when many well-educated people around the world were debating in their ivory towers (象牙塔), one man named Albert Schweitzer packed up his life, started learning medicine from scratch, and headed deep into the jungle.
Schweitzer was born in 1875 in a peaceful town. Before he turned 30, he had earned a doctorate (博士学位) in philosophy. He could have easily stayed in Europe, enjoying respect, success, and a quiet life. But he felt something was missing. After reading about the need for doctors in Africa, he saw a gap between what people believed and what they actually did, pushing him to go to medical school and start all over again in his thirties.
By 1913, Schweitzer had completed his training. Together with his wife, Helene, he traveled to Gabon, an African country. There, with basic tools, hand-carried supplies and strong determination, he founded a small hospital. His work was far from attractive. He treated wounds in small shelters, fought tropical diseases without modern resources and sometimes used his own savings to keep the hospital running. It was this mix of selflessness and genuine concern for others that made his life so inspiring.
In 1952, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. He wasn’t the first doctor to help in poor areas, but he redefined what one could be. He wasn’t the first Nobel Peace Prize winner, but he demonstrated how one could stand for peace even during difficult times. He healed not just bodies, but also people’s sense of worth. His life shows that real heroes don’t wear capes (披风); they simply choose to act with care, courage and compassion.
24. What mainly inspired Schweitzer to study medicine and go to Africa?
A. His passion for adventure in the African jungle.
B. His desire to do something different and start all over again.
C. His dissatisfaction of debating with others in the ivory tower.
D. His awareness of the difference between people’s belief and action.
25. Which of the following is true about Schweitzer’s work in Gabon?
A. It was focused on tropical diseases. B. It was challenging and resource-stressed.
C. It was well-supported by local government. D. It was attractive and rewarded with fame and fortune.
26. What does the underlined saying “real heroes don’t wear capes” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Capes are not a typical feature of real heroes.
B. Real heroes should not be judged by their clothes.
C. Doctors are more heroic than superheroes in comics.
D. True heroism lies in quiet, purposeful, and caring action.
27. What kind of person is Albert Schweitzer?
A. Selfless and committed. B. Creative and brave.
C. Ambitious and competitive. D. Energetic and intelligent.

The world is diverse, and people in every culture have their own unique living habits. However, the topic “Becoming Chinese” has sparked a worldwide craze, making it a hit across social media, such as TikTok.
Guided by content creators such as Chinese-American Sherry, the crazy trend sees netizens worldwide embracing routines like wearing house slippers, drinking hot water and practicing Ba Duan Jin exercises. In a recent interview, Sherry said that introducing simple daily habits that are easy to adopt has created an accessible point for global audiences. Although she expects the initial social media craze to fade, she hopes her creations will contribute to a lasting openness toward Chinese culture.
Many people owe the quick spread of Chinese lifestyle to its mix of health and ease, which is cheap and simple to pick up. “Warm water calms my stomach better than iced drinks ever did.” a US lifestyle blogger shared. Another user posted about how 10 minutes of Ba Duan Jin daily has fixed her long-term sleep troubles. These tiny shifts fit perfectly with people’s eagerness for a slower, healthier lifestyle — no wonder the trend took off!
Moreover, two key forces fuel the craze: policy and technology. China has extended its visa-free period from 144 to 240 hours for travelers from 55 countries, who have seized this chance to wander city streets, sample local eats, and share adventures online. Plus, translation tools and social media let these daily moments spread fast. This trend isn’t just about habits — it’s about seeing China beyond kung fu, pandas and ancient palaces.
The “Becoming Chinese” craze isn’t a one-time thing — it’s a sweet start of closer cultural ties worldwide. The next “China craze” may well lie in another everyday moment. This form of cultural spread better reflects the significance of cultural soft power — it is not about active promotion, but about natural attraction.
28. What is Sherry’s hope for her videos?
A. To help people have a real taste of China.
B. To get the initial social media craze to continue.
C. To encourage long-term embrace of Chinese culture.
D. To promote house slippers and Ba Duan Jin practice.
29. What’s the purpose of mentioning two US bloggers in paragraph three?
A. To illustrate Chinese lifestyle is healthy and simple.
B. To present certain Chinese daily routines in the USA.
C. To show Chinese daily practices are cheaper than others.
D. To prove these methods are perfect changes for Americans.
30. What can we learn about the cultural spread from the last two paragraphs?
A. It should depend heavily on social media influence.
B. It is a short-lived phenomenon and a shift is to come soon.
C. It offers easy access to kung fu, pandas and ancient palaces.
D. It shows the natural cultural attraction is rooted in daily life.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Becoming Chinese: Social Media’s Influence
B. Becoming Chinese: A Worldwide Lifestyle Craze
C. Becoming Chinese: Health tips with Chinese Habits
D. Becoming Chinese: Ancient Chinese Culture in Modern Times

NASA has broken its own record by transmitting ultra-clear video over a distance of 31 million kilometres from deep space. The video wasn’t of distant heavenly bodies or spacecraft, but of a cat called Taters running after the light from a laser (激光) pointer.
The 15 seconds of the video was transmitted from NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment, which is being conducted on the spacecraft named Psyche that was launched in October. The DSOC experiment will send high-speed test data to the Earth during a two-year run, and is part of NASA’s long-term plan to use lasers rather than radios to transmit information from space.
The video of Taters was shot and uploaded to the spacecraft before launch. Abhijit Biswas at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) says that Taters — a JPL employee’s pet — was chosen for the first transmission over that distance because one of the first television test broadcasts also featured a cat — the cartoon Felix the Cat. The film also shows Psyche’s orbital path and technical information about the laser and its data transmission rate.
The video took 101 seconds to travel from the spacecraft to the Earth. The message was received by equipment at the Hale Telescope at Palomar, before being transmitted over the internet to JPL in southern California, where the video was played in real time. That data rate makes DSOC faster than most domestic broadband connections.
“DSOC is really a proof that this can be done,” says Biswas. He says longer distances than the latest test should be possible in future. One issue is ensuring the laser light is precisely directed so it hits the receiving station. “It’s a very narrow beam (光束); at the distance that Psyche is right now, it is only a few hundred kilometres wide by the time it reaches the Earth,” says Biswas.
32. What aspect of the video transmission is discussed in paragraph two?
A. Its whole procedure. B. Its working principle.
C. Its background information. D. Its evaluation and reviews.
33. What can be inferred about the video?
A. The video only shows a cat chasing the laser light.
B. The video featured a cat to honor early communication tests.
C. The video was shot 31 million kilometres away from the Earth.
D. The video message was transmitted by JPL in southern California.
34. What is Biswas’ attitude towards the future of deep space communication?
A. Optimistic. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
35. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce the ambition of NASA’s Psyche mission.
B. To predict the future of deep space laser transmission.
C. To compare the differences between laser and radio communication.
D. To report a landmark breakthrough in deep space laser communication.

Interpersonal boundaries have consistently been one of the most common topics discussed in our daily life. Boundaries are defined as the limits that determine how close or distant members in a community are and what roles each person plays within it. ____36____ Many people wonder how they can improve boundaries in a society or relationships. Surprisingly, we can learn a great deal from plants. Below are several plant behaviors and the lessons they offer us.
Grounding yourself in what matters
Plants grow roots that make them rooted securely while absorbing only the nutrients they need from the soil. Without strong roots, a plant cannot survive. ____37____ When we know who we are and what our core values are, we are less likely to lose ourselves in relationships. If we lose our roots, we risk losing our direction.
Going with healthy defenses
Many plants develop protective structures such as thorns, thick bark, or poisons to protect themselves from harm. They warn: “Approach with respect.” ____38____ Being able to clearly express needs, discomfort, anger, and limits allows us to protect ourselves while staying connected to others.
____39____
Plants do not grow continuously. They observe natural patterns of growth, rest, and renewal. Humans benefit from similar rhythms. Healthy boundaries include knowing when to rest, step back, and care for ourselves so we can remain emotionally available to others.
Plants are masters of adaptation and survival. Over millions of years, they have developed remarkable ways to maintain balance with their environment. ____40____ Healthy boundaries do not separate us; instead, they help us protect our well-being and sustain everyone involved.
A. Respecting others’ space
B. Following cycles of nature
C. Humans are able to protect ourselves while continuing to stay connected.
D. Similarly, the base of healthy relationships depends on a strong sense of self.
E. These limits shape our communication patterns, relationships, and overall mental health.
F. Learning to strike a balance allows humans to take in what benefits us while limiting what harms us.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was summer and there was no school to go to. My brother and I were home alone. I was ten years old and he was eight. We didn’t live near grandparents and it cost too much to hire a babysitter to cover the time my parents worked. After all, they were struggling to support the family. So it was just two of us. When we were alone at home, we weren’t allowed to go outside. We couldn’t ride our bikes or look for pretty stones in the courtyard.
On our television, local news played: a group of neighbors helping a family fix their roof after a rainstorm, and a little girl leaving a bowl of fresh milk out for homeless cats. We weren’t supposed to watch TV too much, but our parents had told us to keep the television loud so that it would sound as if there were an adult with us.
Not a lot of sounds could be heard on our street, cars passing by and dogs barking. “You hear that?” my brother asked me. “What?” I said. “The ice-cream truck.” I listened. And there it was. That tiny little sound twinkling somewhere nearby. When you heard an ice-cream truck on your street, it meant that someone had thought of you. It meant that someone thought you deserved something good in the world.
I slid the chain off the door and unlocked it. I grabbed my brother and we ran outside to the curb (马路牙子). The sound of the ice-cream truck was so loud, so close. My brother and I waved it down. The ice-cream truck stopped and the man in the truck greeted us with a warm grin. We were wild in our joy, screaming out what we wanted to eat, and for some reason the man made it for us. We got what we asked for and we laughed without any reason, simply for the sake of laughing.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
My brother looked over at me with sudden worry, and said, “Do you have money?”

W: Yes, I think so.
M: Right. Tell me something about it.
W: OK. The hotel is in Sitges, a small town which is 37 kilometers away from Barcelona. And there is a bus stop right outside the hotel.
M: That’s good. The hotel we booked last year was near a busy road, and it was 2 kilometers from the beach. I hope this hotel isn’t like that.
W: No, it’s only about 100 meters away from the beach.
M: OK. What about the entertainment?
W: There’s tennis, table tennis, volleyball and mini golf. Oh, they also organize football matches. It used to have KTV and keep-fit classes, but now they’re closed.
M: Oh, what a pity! What about the overall price?
W: Well, it’s the high season so the price is really high for the moment, $800 one night.
M: Wouldn’t it be better to cut it down to $699? We can try to bargain with the hotel manager.
W: OK. Let’s do it.

【原文】Good evening, this is Community Focus. Today, we’re looking at a rural courtyard improvement project in Ningbo in eastern China. The program encourages local people to improve their home courtyards by planting flowers, repairing old houses and creating pleasant outdoor spaces. Its goal is to make the area cleaner, greener and more attractive. At first, some residents were unsure about the idea because they were used to their old way of life. But as the environment gradually improved the changes became clear. Visitors began coming to enjoy the peaceful countryside and traditional way of life. Soon, some local families opened small home stays or cafes for tourists. In this way, the program not only made the area more beautiful, but also created new chances for families to earn extra income. Today, more residents are taking part. Many of them now realize that improving the environment while developing tourism, not only protects nature, but also supports the local economy and brings people in the community closer together.

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. D 27. A

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. D

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
G. In humans’ words, it means guarding ourselves against negative feelings before we’re overwhelmed.
【答案】36. E 37. D 38. G 39. B 40. F
【解析】
【导语】文章主要围绕人际边界展开,借植物的各类生存习性,阐述建立健康人际边界的几条人生启示。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Boundaries are defined as the limits that determine how close or distant members in a community are and what roles each person plays within it. (边界被定义为决定群体成员亲疏距离以及每个人在群体中角色的界限。)”以及后文“Many people wonder how they can improve boundaries in a society or relationships. (很多人想知道如何在社交和人际关系中完善边界感。)”可知,此处需要承接前文对边界的定义,继续说明界限带来的影响或重要性等内容。E选项“These limits shape our communication patterns, relationships, and overall mental health. (这些界限塑造我们的沟通模式、人际关系与整体心理健康。)”中These limits指代前文提到的limits,衔接上下文逻辑。
【37题详解】
根据前文“Plants grow roots that make them rooted securely while absorbing only the nutrients they need from the soil. Without strong roots, a plant cannot survive. (植物扎根稳固,只吸收土壤中所需养分,没有强健根系便无法存活。)”以及后文“When we know who we are and what our core values are, we are less likely to lose ourselves in relationships. (当我们认清自我与核心价值观,就不容易在人际关系中迷失。)”可知,此处用植物扎根类比人建立自我认知。D选项“Similarly, the base of healthy relationships depends on a strong sense of self. (同理,健康人际关系的根基依靠稳固的自我认知。)”通过Similarly完成类比过渡,符合语境。
【38题详解】
根据前文“Many plants develop protective structures such as thorns, thick bark, or poisons to protect themselves from harm. They warn: “Approach with respect.” (许多植物长出尖刺、厚树皮或毒素等防护结构自保,警示他人保持分寸。)”以及后文“Being able to clearly express needs, discomfort, anger, and limits allows us to protect ourselves while staying connected to others. (清晰表达需求、不适、愤怒和界限,既能保护自己又维系社交。)”可知,此处将植物的防御机制转到人的自我保护方式。G选项“In humans’ words, it means guarding ourselves against negative feelings before we’re overwhelmed. (换到人的层面,这代表在被负面情绪压垮前做好自我防护。)”承接前文的植物防御,过渡到后文人类的相处之道。
【39题详解】
根据后文“Plants do not grow continuously. They observe natural patterns of growth, rest, and renewal. Humans benefit from similar rhythms. (植物不会无休止生长,而是遵循生长、休整、新生的自然周期,人类也能从这类规律中获益。)”可知,本段的核心是顺应自然循环。B选项“Following cycles of nature (遵循自然循环)”作为小标题,能够准确概括本段主旨。

The Very Word That Best Describes Myself
The Very Word That Best Describes Myself would be “perseverance”.
Last year, I struggled with English speaking. I was too nervous to answer questions, and my pronunciation was poor. Instead of giving up, I practised every day, recording myself, comparing with online resources, and keeping an English diary. After six months of consistent effort, I won third place in our school’s English Speech Contest.
Perseverance has shaped me. It taught me that setbacks are stepping stones, not endpoints. Whenever I face difficulties now, I remind myself: never give up. This word guides me through every challenge.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
My brother looked over at me with sudden worry, and said, “Do you have money?”

【答案】
My brother looked over at me with sudden worry, and said, “Do you have money?” My heart sank. I reached into my pockets and found nothing. My brother did the same, his small hands coming up empty. We had run out so fast that we hadn’t thought about money at all. Our parents were struggling to support the family; we never had pocket money. The joy drained from my face, replaced by shame. I stared at the ground, too embarrassed to look at the man. My brother’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, setting my ice cream back. “We can’t pay.”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s my treat,” the man said. His voice was gentle. My brother’s face lit up instantly, his tears turning into a bright smile. “Really? Thank you!” he exclaimed. Relief washed over me, and gratitude swelled in my chest. “We really appreciate it, sir,” I said. As we sat on the curb licking our treats, the man played his cheerful music just for us. When he finally drove away, the sound of his truck lingered in the air — a reminder that kindness exists in unexpected places.
