How Teenagers in China Use the Internet
A recent survey interviewed over 90,000 teenagers from China to learn how they use the internet. The survey was done by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and it shows clear changes over the past five years.
Study takes first place. In 2019, only 42% of teens searched online for schoolwork. The number has risen from 42 percent to 61 percent in 2024. There is a rise of 19 percent in students using the Internet to look up learning materials, finish homework and watch teaching videos online. When they have difficult problems, search engines help them find clear answers quickly. Some also take online courses to improve their weak subjects.
Communication comes second. Around 58 percent chat with classmates and family on messaging apps. This share goes up slowly every year, as more students share daily stories and discuss school projects online. They also follow their friends’ social media posts to stay connected.
Entertainment is another main online activity, yet gaming time has changed a lot. Five years ago, 53% of teens spent much time on online games, but this figure fell to 36% last year. There is a drop of 17 percent in teenage game players. Meanwhile, short video viewing rates slightly go down.
Only a small number of teenagers use the Internet to read news. This group’s percentage stays unchanged all through the survey years. Few students search for news or learn new skills such as coding and photography online.
Experts say the rise in online learning is a good sign. But they remind teens not to let screen time increase without control. It is important to balance online fun and schoolwork to avoid internet addiction.

A Survey on Senior High Students’ Internet Use
Recently our school carried out a survey on students’ purposes of surfing the Internet. Here are the results shown in the pie chart.
40% of students go online for looking up learning materials, which ranks first. 30% spend their time on online chat. Games and online entertainment take up 15%, the same percentage as shopping activities.
The data shows most students use the Internet for study, but over half waste much time on chatting and fun. To make good use of the Internet, we should focus more on study-related resources. Meanwhile, we are supposed to control time spent on entertainment and online shopping.
