(2026·河北保定联考)A surfer who lost his right leg to a shark attack months ago has amazed people by returning to the waves on his one remaining leg.In a show of remarkable courage, the surfer Kai McKenzie paddled out to the same spot where he had been attacked by a white shark four months earlier, which was quite a rare case.

After the initial shock, McKenzie kept his spirits uplifted by his mission to return to the water before the end of the year. The 23yearold had promised to get back into surfing as soon as he was able to.McKenzie took off his artificial limb (肢) and got back to riding the waves and practising new moves. He paddled out with focus, catching several waves, jumping on his board with one leg and occasionally steering (控制) it with one hand when it was off course. It's far from effortless to surf with one leg which causes imbalance, and when he wiped out, he'd only got one leg to swing back up.

Supported by family, McKenzie appeared at ease in the same water despite admitting he was a bit nervous because the water looked “exactly like that day”.His bravery and skill while surfing on one foot touched everyone. He later posted his return to the ocean online.“It's one of the craziest feelings I've had! It's the first time that I'd paddled back in the water where I got bitten,” he wrote.“I sat out there by myself and took it in for a little bit then a bunch of good people surfed with me.”

Mark, a surfing champion who lost his right leg due to cancer, mentioned McKenzie's return to the ocean, saying, “That fear of the shark would have been behind him as he was paddling out.Getting back out there is extremely courageous.McKenzie might not at the top yet, but he's young and he'll adapt fast.He has taken his first and biggest step by getting out there.”

(2026·安徽马鞍山质量检测)I was 17 when Julio Cortázar's wildly experimental 1963 masterpiece, Hopscotch, fell into my hands, and that book almost drove me crazy.Cortázar cast conventional structure aside, willing the reader to jump between 155 short chapters.Only years later did I understand Cortázar. It was my first experience of the exciting unpredictability that lay ahead in my journey with books.

Today's book talk often presents reading somewhere between the wholesomeness of vegetables and the pleasures of a patisserie (法式糕点):books are beneficial, good for you, or they're a treat, a pleasure. But that leaves out the trickier, more delicate pleasures of tackling difficult books, the big challenges on our bookshelves that question your deepest values or make you uncomfortable in the right way.

In a set of studies, two professors, Gay Ivey from the University of North Carolina and Peter Johnston from the University of Albany, found that reading difficult books about characters with complicated lives helped teenagers become more understanding, less judgmental, more likely to seek multiple viewpoints, morally stronger, and happier.

One of my favorite writers, Sarah Chihaya, explores books that are “Life Ruiners” — books that “you can't ever recover from, that you never stop thinking about”, books that leave you fundamentally changed.Reading books that refuse to be easily digested, “the ones that bring up anxieties and fears you never knew you had”, helped Chihaya to feel, as she writes, not “better”, but “simply different”.As with many lifelong readers, the books that truly shaped me were not always pleasurable — but they were irresistible.

You're not always ready for every challenging read, of course.Timing matters. The American novelist Garth Greenwell said in a 2024 interview that at 20, he tried Frank Bidart's poems and turned away; but just a few years later, “reading his poems would be one of the key literary experiences of my life”.If a book doesn't work for you, don't force yourself to finish it; but leave the door open to the idea that, like certain friendships, it might kindle (点燃) years later.

[语篇解读] 这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了作者对于阅读的看法以及阅读难读书籍的好处。

5.What does the author think of today's book talk?

A.It breaks tradition.

B.It is rather structured.

C.It truly lacks depth.

D.It is alternative in style.page number 2
