3a Read the text. What has stayed the same in the student's life?
Changes in My Life
Now that I am older, my life is different from when I was in primary school. For example, my primary school was near my home, so I used to walk to school with my parents. Now my junior high school is farther from home. I take a bus every day with my friends.
My home has changed too. My family used to live in a small flat, but now we have moved to a much larger one. My grandma lives with us now as well. She has her own room and her own TV set. I am glad that I get to see her every day.
The way I study is also different. I have become more confident in my studies and often attend group discussions. I enjoy studying with my friends. It's amazing how much we have achieved together.
My life has changed in many ways, but one thing has stayed the same: the feeling of love and happiness shared by my family.

Summarize the structure
Now it’s time for you to write to yourself in the past about the changes you have experienced!
3d Choose three changes. Write a short passage about them. End with one thing that has stayed the same.
Changes in My Life
Now that I’m older, my life has changed a lot.
Let’s talk about the neighbourhood first. Years ago, my neighbourhood had old houses, no places to play, and was far from shops. But now there are new buildings, a small park to run around in, and a store just down the street—it’s so convenient!
Transport has changed. I used to walk almost everywhere, and if I took the bus, I had to wait 30 minutes for just one. Now I can take buses or the subway easily, call a car with my mom’s phone, or ride a shared bike when the weather is nice. Getting around is faster now.
The environment has changed too. Before, the roads were dirty, there were few trees, and trash was left outside. But now the streets are clean, there are many flowers and trees in the community, and we sort our trash every day to keep things tidy.
These changes make my life better, but one thing has stayed the same: my family’s care. My parents still tuck me in at night and ask about my day, and that warm feeling is always there!

4a In groups, think of 10 things that are important in life.
Here are some examples.
4b Design a survey for your parents or grandparents using
the 10 things you thought of.
Survey:
1. What were computers like when you were young?
2. How did you get to school? How long did it take?
3. What did you do for entertainment when you were my age?
4. ...
What food did you eat as a kid? Did you have many choices?
How did you talk to faraway relatives when you were young?
What was your home like as a kid? Big or small?
What clothes did you wear at my age? Did you get new clothes often?
How did you get news when you were young? Did you use the internet?
4c Interview your parents or grandparents about their lives when they were your age. Note down their answers.
4d List the differences between their lives and your own.
Then Now
Most people didn't have computers in their homes. Home computers are common and many people use smart devices.
People walked or rode bikes to go to far places.
People often take buses, cars or subways to travel.
Families ate simple food with few choices.
Families have many kinds of food to choose from.
Kids played outdoor games (like hide-and-seek) for fun.
Kids often play games on phones or watch videos for fun.
4e Give a presentation to your class about the differences between then and now.
Life is very different for our grandparents and us. First, in terms of technology, few families had computers when they were young, but now we use phones and computers every day. Next, travelling is quite different too—our grandparents mostly walked or rode bikes to get around, while we often take fast buses, cars or subways. Besides, food choices have changed a lot: they ate simple meals with few options, but we have many delicious foods to pick from. Finally, the way we have fun is not the same—they played outdoor games with friends, but we usually use phones or computers for entertainment. Today’s life is easier, and both their days and ours are filled with happy moments…
1. What do you think brings about changes?
2. Which changes mentioned in this unit impressed you the most? Why?
3. Can you use the simple past and present perfect tenses to talk about changes?
4. What is one change you would like to see in the world?
5. What is one change you would like to see in yourself?
Reflecting
Change is the opportunity to create a
better future.
Unit 1
We walked farther than we planned yesterday.
We need further discussion to make the decision.
1. Now my junior high school is farther from home.
常用搭配:be confident in sth(对某事有信心);be confident to do sth(有信心做某事)。
例句:
She is confident in her English speaking skills.
I feel more confident to perform on stage now.
2. I have become more confident in my studies and often
attend group discussions.
这是一个“It 作形式主语”的主从复合句,真正的主语是后面的从句“how much we have achieved together”。
It's wonderful how quickly she has learned to play the piano.
It's surprising how many interesting stories our teacher has to share.
3. It's amazing how much we have achieved together.
