From January 31 to February 5, I took part in a volunteer teaching program in Guilin. It is a really unforgettable experience that will stay in my mind forever.
I spent time with a group of young local children 1 as their teacher. Being a teacher usually makes people feel respected. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would manage this special task. I didn’t want to be too 2 with them and make them feel nervous, but I also hoped the children would learn as much as possible during our short time together. I worried that they might not focus on my lessons, 3 they would waste the study time we spent together.
To my surprise, the children were very hard-working. They greeted me warmly every morning and listened carefully all the time. Honestly, I couldn’t have hoped for a 4 group of students. The lessons focused too much on 5 and seemed boring to sixth graders. They might easily 6 their attention — but in fact they didn’t. I didn’t see a child lower his or her head 7 class. All of them kept focused on the lessons carefully and took notes now and then. How 8 they picked up new knowledge was really amazing.
As days went by, we built strong friendships. We laughed and shared little stories after class, and got along like old friends. When the program ended, 9 of us wanted to leave. One of my students gave me a hand-made flower as a small gift. That touching moment made me realize that it was worth spending so much time preparing my 10 .
This volunteer activity brought me so much joy and warmth. If I have another chance to take part in a similar program, I will certainly say yes.

All living things need food. The nutrients (营养) in food provide energy for the body and meet basic needs for growth.
The human body needs six main kinds of nutrients to stay healthy. Three of them — proteins, carbohydrates and fat — are needed more than the others. Eating a balanced diet is the best way to get all the nutrients and water.
Our body gets energy from food, just as a car runs on oil. A banana has enough energy to keep you running for about 12 minutes, but other foods have more energy. If you take in more energy than you use, your body keeps energy as fat.
Look at the labels (标签) of different foods. They show how much nutrient is in the food and how much energy it has.
11. What is the topic of the passage?
A. Sports. B. Health. C. Art. D. Science.
12. Why does the writer use the example of a car running on oil?
A. To show that cars and the human body work in the same way.
B. To show that the human body needs more energy than a car does.
C. To show that people need to eat more high-energy food to run fast.
D. To show that food provides energy for the human body just as oil does for cars.
13. Which food can keep you running for the longest time?
A. A banana. B. An egg sandwich. C. A 230g steak. D. A 100g chocolate.
14. How many calories can you get if you eat 100g egg sandwich, 200g banana and 100g beef?
A. 631. B. 400. C. 540. D. 63.3.
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Taking in less energy than you use will make your body store fat.

C. The human body needs three main kinds of nutrients to stay healthy.
D. A banana can provide enough energy for people to run for 35 minutes.

Silkworms are important insects because they create silk. And people use silk for clothes and art. Like other insects, a silkworm has four stages in its life cycle.
Silkworms once lived in Africa and Asia, but they can no longer be found in the wild. Now, silkworms only live in silk factories or people’s homes as pets. Silkworms prefer warm weather. If it is too cold, their eggs can sleep until it gets warm again.
Silkworms begin as tiny eggs laid in lines on the leaves of mulberry. A mother moth (蛾) can lay 300 to 500 eggs. The eggs are yellow at first, but turn black before they come out. It takes about 14 days for silkworms to come out of the eggs.
Silkworms that come out from the eggs are called caterpillars. They keep eating for about 25 days, and they only eat mulberry leaves. A silkworm starts as a tiny caterpillar, but it grows longer very fast.
About a month after coming out, they start to make a cocoon (茧) around themselves with one long, thin silk line. If you pull out the line, it can be 300 to 900 meters long. Then the caterpillar turns into a brown, hard pupa (蛹) inside the cocoon.
After about seven days, the pupa becomes an adult moth. The moth makes a small hole in the cocoon and climbs out. The adult moth cannot fly because its body is too heavy for its thin wings. Since the moth does not eat, it only lives for 5 to 10 days. The mother silkworm lays her eggs before she dies.

Many people think durian is tasty fruit, but you probably never see a candle that has the smell of durian. This is mainly because durian gives out an extremely strong smell, which explains why quite a number of people dislike it.
However, Vincent Gomes, a researcher from a university, holds a different opinion. He believes that this special fruit may completely change our lives in the near future.
In Gomes’ eyes, durian is far more than just a common fruit. His research team has made a discovery after lots of experiments: durian can serve as a natural super-capacitor (超级电容器).
Similar to ordinary batteries (), super-capacitors are devices used to store electrical energy. Even so, they are better than the batteries we are using nowadays. They are able to hold far more electricity and get recharged (充电) more quickly. What matters most is that they also have a longer service life. The batteries inside our mobile phones depend on chemicals (化学物质) to produce power. Once these chemicals run out, the used batteries will turn into harmful rubbish and bring about serious pollution to the environment. Scientists have tried the best to make safer and more powerful batteries for years.
Though super-capacitors have lots of advantages, they have not been popularized so far. The reason is that the traditional way of making them carries risks. Luckily, durian has made scientists find a new way.
Gomes and his team members have managed to create super-capacitors by using durian cores (果核). However, there are still a great number of difficulties waiting to be solved. It is predicted that durian-based batteries will hit the market in a few years. We can only wish that they won’t carry the unpleasant smell of durian. They are expected to be widely used, from smartphones to cars.
21. What does Gomes think of durian?
A. It has a tasty smell. B. The candle has the smell of durian.
C. It’s just a common fruit. D. It can be used to make super-capacitor.
22. What can we infer (推断) about super-capacitors from Paragraph 4?
A. They totally depend on chemicals to work.
B. They will soon disappear from the market.
C. They may cause more pollution than old batteries.
D. They are better than common batteries in many ways.
23. Why do traditional super-capacitors fail to be popularized?
A. They cost too much money to make. B. The way of making them is not safe enough.
C. They have shorter service lives than batteries. D. No proper chemicals can be used to make them.
24. What does the writer think of durian batteries?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Uninterested.
25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Smelly Fruit — Durian B. The Future of Super-capacitors
C. A New Discovery of Durian D. Disadvantages of Traditional Batteries

Every time the Chinese New Year holiday comes to a close, many people across China pack their bags and head out on a journey full of fresh hopes. In 2026, I drove back to Beijing after the holiday. It provided me with the chance to join the yearly “trunk-filling activity” at the end of the Spring Festival.
The night before I left, my parents were busy planning how to make the most trunk space in my car. They carefully chose things they thought I would need or enjoy back in the city. From homemade dishes like meatballs prepared during the holiday to fresh vegetables and fruit from local farms, they filled every part of the trunk. They even included specialties which they thought would be hard to find in Beijing.
On my return trip, almost every highway service area was full of cars. As drivers opened their trunks, the colourful packages inside caught my eye. One driver, Xiaohao, who was returning to Tianjin with all kinds of vegetables, said “It’s not that I can’t buy them in the city. It’s that this shows my family’s love.”
Later, while using the Internet, I found that many people were also joining the “trunk-filling activity” and sharing photos of their trunks. One person said, “No matter how large the trunk is, my parents can fill it up.”
Driving back with a trunk full of homemade foods, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of thankfulness. The things packed so carefully by my parents were not just things — they were pieces of home, signs of love, and sources (来源) of comfort for the coming year.
