Last spring, 13-year-old Mia found three baby robins (知更鸟) lying under the apple tree in her neighborhood park — their nest (巢) was broken by plastic bags in the tree. “Eighty percent of land rubbish ends up harming wildlife,” her science teacher had said. That moment, Mia couldn’t just watch.
Mia started picking up litter after school, but she soon realized one person wasn’t enough. With her friend Leo, she made posters titled “Save Our Park Birds” and handed them out. To her surprise, ten classmates joined their clean-up team the next weekend. They collected 47 plastic bottles and 23 plastic bags, and reported the broken garbage cans to the government.
Weeks later, the government provided new recycling cans. Mia’s team even planted small shrubs around the apple tree to provide shelter for birds. One morning, they found the mother robin building a new nest in the same tree. “Every little action counts,” Leo said, smiling.
Mia now writes a monthly report about wildlife protection for the school newspaper. “If you love nature and know what lives in it, you’ll want to protect it,” she wrote. Just like the apple tree, their small action had grown into something strong.

Recycling is not a new way of dealing with waste. Old clothes, bottles, newspapers and books have been recycled for a long time. The cry of the bottle collector “Bottles. Bottles” used to be always heard in our streets. Until the 1960s, most people paid a deposit when they bought a bottle of drink and got their money back when they returned the bottle. However, as more and more of our containers (容器) became non-returnable and more and more of our products were made to be thrown away, less and less of our waste was recycled. Now people are starting to realise the problems caused by so much waste. Recycling is increasing. When we recycle waste, we treat it so that new products can be made from it. Most local organizations collect paper, glass and some plastic bottles for recycling, and in some areas, steel cans are collected. Aluminium (铝) cans are already collected by service clubs, schools and sports teams. At home, we can recycle food waste and garden waste as compost (肥料).
Even though 70%-80% of our household rubbish can be recycled, our recycling system is not very good. The problem seems to be that:
·many people do not put waste out for organizations to collect for recycling.
·not many products that people want to buy are made of recycled material, especially plastics.
·many waste products are not easy to recycle.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. What does the underlined word “deposit” probably mean in Chinese?
A. 租金 B. 押金 C. 账单 D. 定金
12. Why did less and less waste get recycled after the 1960s?
A. Bottle collectors stopped working in the streets.
B. More containers became non-returnable and more products were made to be thrown away.
C. Local organizations refused to collect waste for recycling.
D. People forgot how to recycle old things like clothes and newspapers.
13. How do people recycle food waste and garden waste at home according to the passage?
A. They sell them to bottle collectors. B. They leave them on the streets.
C. They send them to service clubs. D. They turn them into compost.
14. Which of the following is an opinion (观点) according to the text?
A. Our recycling system is not very good.
B. The cry of the bottle collector “Bottles. Bottles” used to be always heard in our streets.
C. Old clothes, bottles, newspapers and books have been recycled for a long time.
D. Most local organizations collect paper, glass and some plastic bottles for recycling.
15. Why does the writer list the three problems of the recycling system in the last paragraph?
A. To show that the recycling system is perfect and needs no improvement.
B. To explain why recycling is a new way of dealing with waste.
C. To point out what needs to be improved to make the recycling system better.
D. To show that non-returnable containers are good for the environment.

Environmental Protection Has Changed My Life
In recent years, environmental protection has drawn more attention, and it has also changed my life a lot.
In the past, I often used single-use things when eating. And plastic bags were my first choice while shopping, which were convenient but caused a lot of pollution. But now, I’ve made big changes. I use reusable bowls and chopsticks. When shopping, I always take cloth bags instead of plastic ones. For short-distance trips, I also choose green transportation methods such as walking or riding a bicycle.
I believe that everyone’s small actions can make a big difference. If we all do our part, we can build a greener world.
