根据后文“sing old songs or tell funny stories to make the elderly laugh”这一传递欢乐的关键行为,可知陪伴的核心是带来积极感受,“happiness”“幸福”契合“bring...to the old”的语境。
结合后文“I always look forward to their coming every weekend”体现的常态化志愿安排,“usually”“通常”能准确描述这种规律性活动。
根据“help the old people...the rooms”的居家帮扶场景,养老院老人最需要的基础照料是清洁,“clean”“打扫”符合帮扶内容。
前文“sing old songs and tell funny stories”的目的是让老人产生愉悦反应,“laugh”“笑”直接对应欢乐的结果。
结合“the elderly in nursing homes or their own homes”独居老人的背景,最突出的心理需求是消除孤独,“lonely”“孤单的”精准匹配独居老人的心境。
根据“learn to...the old”的志愿核心目标,服务老人的关键是照料,“care for”“照料”贴合志愿主题。“look for”“寻找”,“wait for”“等待”,“dance for”“为……
结合后文“Teachers think it is a good way for students...”

Summer vacation brings us enough free time to relax, but safety is always the most important thing during the holiday. As middle school students, we should learn useful skills to protect ourselves from natural disasters and all kinds of hidden safety risks in summer.
First, we need to master basic ways to deal with common natural disasters. When heavy rain and floods happen, we must stay away from low-lying areas (低洼地带), running rivers and electric wires (电线). When typhoons or strong thunderstorms (雷雨) come, we had better stay indoors and avoid going out. Never take shelter under tall trees on lightning days, or we may get hurt by electric shocks.
Second, water safety deserves (值得) our special attention. Many terrible drowning (溺水) accidents take place in summer every year. We must never swim in wild rivers, ponds or other unguarded open waters. Most importantly, do not jump into the water to save others if someone falls into the water. Instead, we should shout for adult help loudly and throw ropes or floating objects (漂浮物) to help the drowning person.
Besides, we should avoid staying outdoors for a long time on hot days to prevent heat illness. We must keep away from dangerous building sites and follow traffic rules strictly whenever we go out alone or with friends.
Building strong self-protection awareness (意识) is of great importance. Only by keeping good safety habits all the time can we enjoy a wonderful, healthy and safe summer vacation.

24. Why does the writer advise us not to jump into water to save others?

In 2025, Guangxi faced a serious drought. No one in Guangxi had ever imagined facing such a terrible drought. It changed our green, rainy homeland into a dry and lifeless place. From the beginning of December 2024 to mid May 2025, there was hardly any heavy rain here. Only small rains fell on the ground sometimes. This is the lowest since 1961.
Why did this happen? A weather event called La Niña sent strong winds from the north over Guangxi. Also, the high-pressure system (高压系统) kept wet air away, so it was hotter and less rainy.
The unusual drought has affected people’s drinking water and crops (农作物). Thousands of people didn’t have enough water to drink, and large areas of crops were dying. Many big water pools were running dry. Many cities like Nanning and Guilin, along with lots of counties (县), had drought problems. In Guigang, some small water pools even had no water left (剩余).
The government tried the best to help. They dug (挖) many new wells for water and did cloud seeding (人工降雨) many times to keep increasing the rainfall. The government used a large sum of money to solve the problems, such as rebuilding farms, buying water tools and sending water. These efforts made sure people had enough water until the rains came. Now in June, it rains a lot, and the land turns green again.
Guangxi’s unforeseen drought tells the truth: Nature is like a magic box full of surprises. Just when you think you’ve understood him well enough, he suddenly shows us something we haven’t expected. He reminds us that no matter how much we study and prepare, nature always has his own rules and ways of working.
