The door opened. A tall, handsome old man came in slowly. He looked very troubled and tired. It was John Turner.
“Good evening, Mr. Holmes,” he said. “I received your note, so I came.”
“Please sit down, Mr. Turner,” said Holmes calmly. “I have been expecting you.”
“I’m afraid you expect me to face trial (审判),” Turner said sadly. “You know everything, don’t you?”
“Yes, I have known for some time,” said Holmes.
“Then what will you do?” the old man asked.
“I want to hear the story from your own mouth,” Holmes replied.
“All right,” Turner sighed. “That Charles McCarthy, who died, is a terrible man. I don’t regret doing it. But I won’t go to court (法庭). I’m not afraid of death, but I cannot let my name and my daughter’s life be destroyed. I’ll tell you the truth, but only to you.”
Holmes nodded. “I will keep the secret—you have my word.”
“It’s a deal,” said Turner. “I’m seriously ill and I don’t have long to live. I’d rather die peacefully in my own bed than be hanged. I’ll tell you the whole story now.”
Then Turner sat down and began. “In the early 1860s, I was in Australia, at the goldfields. I was young and fell in with some bad men, then together we robbed (抢劫) a gold transport. There were six of us. Charles McCarthy was the driver. We killed the guards, but spared his life because he promised he would never tell anyone. Later I came to England and bought this land and big house in Boscombe Valley. Years later, McCarthy turned up and threatened (威胁) me. He forced me to give him money and I have lived in fear ever since. Recently, he even tried to force my daughter to marry his son. That was what I couldn’t stand the most, so I met him by the Boscombe Pool and I told him I would never agree. He threatened me again and I became mad with anger…”

A hundred years ago, it was really difficult for people to talk to someone far away. They had to use horses to carry letters, and it took a very long time. Then, a clever American painter named Samuel Morse created a set of special codes (密码) to help send messages quickly.
To make it work, a person used a machine to beat special codes for each letter. These beats travelled through wires (电线) to another place. At the other end, another machine printed (打印) the codes on paper. The receiver could understand the message by reading the codes. Later, people learned to understand the codes just by listening to the beating sounds. In 1844, the first message written in Morse Code was sent in America. After that, more and more countries began to use it to send messages.
You may wonder what Morse Code really is. All in all, Morse Code is a special system and it uses dots (.) and dashes (-) to send messages. A dash is about three times longer than a dot. Here are 26 letters in Morse Code:
In fact, Morse Code isn’t just for letters. It also has codes for numbers and punctuation marks (标点). What’s more, some special letter groups stand for common phrases. For example, “CUL” means “see you later”. “CQ” means “call any station” or “search for somebody to communicate with”. The most famous code is SOS. It stands for “save our souls”. People can also use sound or a flashlight to send Morse Code. When in danger, people even use blinking (闪烁的) lights to send the SOS code, and others can understand it by watching.
▲ But that is not true! Some people who are crazy about radio often use Morse Code in competitions. Pilots flying airplanes use Morse Code from special lighthouses (灯塔) in the sky to find where they are. And perhaps the most exciting use of Morse Code is helping disabled people communicate. For example, some people cannot speak or move their hands, but they can still “talk” using Morse Code by blinking their eyes. Doctors and families can watch the blinks to read their messages. Even AI cannot completely replace it. Isn’t that amazing?
32. What is the correct expression for SOS according to Morse Code?
A. B. C. D.
33. How does the writer introduce what Morse Code is?
A. By giving an example. B. By explaining in short.
C. By listing a fact. D. By asking a question.
34. Which sentence can be put in “ ▲ ” in the last paragraph?
A. You might think we don’t use Morse Code to send messages anymore.
B. You might think we can use AI instead of Morse Code now.
C. You might think Morse Code is not as powerful as AI.
D. You might think Morse Code is old and no one uses it anymore.
35. What can we infer from this passage?
A. Morse Code is very interesting but difficult to us.
B. Samuel Morse is a very clever and creative American.
C. Morse Code is still useful no matter how time changes.
D. Morse Code is now as useful as AI in our daily life.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

第三段“You may wonder what Morse Code really is. All in all, Morse Code is a special system and it uses dots (.) and dashes (-) to send messages.”,作者用概括性语言简短解释了摩尔斯电码的本质与工作原理。
【34题详解】
最后一段空格后“But that is not true!”是转折句,说明空格内容是错误观点,下文介绍了当今摩尔斯电码仍在多个领域被使用,因此空格处错误观点应为“你可能会觉得摩尔斯电码已经过时,没人再使用了。”选项A“don’t use Morse Code to send messages”仅提及不再用来发信息,与下文“...use Morse Code in competitions.”的用途矛盾。
【35题详解】
最后一段提及“Even AI cannot completely replace it.”并结合本段内容,摩尔斯电码如今仍被使用且不能被AI完全取代,可推断出,无论时间如何变化,摩尔斯电码依然有用。选项B是原文直接陈述的事实,并非推断得出。

AI technology is almost everywhere in our daily lives and is developing faster than anyone expected. One of the hottest topics these days is: Should middle school students be allowed to use AI in their homework? Here are some of the ideas.
I’m Xu Mei, a teacher in a middle school. It’s true that AI is widely used now. Adults use AI at work to make tasks easier. Children also learn how to use AI in IT lessons at school. However, if students use AI to finish their homework, I will not be able to know their real learning progress. Also, students may depend on AI too much instead of solving problems themselves. They may think they can achieve success easily without hard work, and that is not good for them.
I’m Zhang Lin, a mother of a 14-year-old boy. In my family, AI is a great helper. It can help my son solve difficult math problems calmly and patiently, which improves the relationship between my child and me. But at the same time, I’m worried that my son may easily become crazy about it and can’t focus on study itself. Moreover, too much screen time will harm his physical health, especially the eyesight.
I’m Li Ming, a middle school student from Shanghai. We sometimes use AI when doing homework. I think...

Brain CEO: Your “Boss” Needs a Break Too
Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to stay focused or manage your emotions, when you’re tired? The answer lies in a front part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex (大脑前额叶皮层), and it is the CEO of your brain. It’s one of the most important parts that helps you focus, control your temper and make decisions.
Research shows that the prefrontal cortex is the first part to get tired when you’re stressed. That’s why after a long day of studying, you’re more likely to be attracted by other things and find it hard to pay attention. Another key reason is about multitasking (多任务协作). When you try to multitask—switching (转换) between different tasks in a short time—your attention can drop by up to 40%. Your prefrontal cortex can only focus well on one thing at a time.
So, how do we protect it? Taking short breaks can be helpful. A 10-minute walk can help protect your brain and keep your prefrontal cortex in better condition. Besides, try to avoid multitasking. Switching between tasks can make you less effective. Instead, you’d better focus on one thing at a time. It is also a good choice to write down your free thoughts. When you are working, some free thoughts may suddenly appear, like “I need to reply to a message”. Write down the thought on a note nearby. It tells your brain, “I’ve saved it, so forget about it for now and focus on what you are doing.”
In short, your prefrontal cortex works hard for you every day. It deserves your care! If you treat it well, it will help you to live a calm life.
This passage mainly explains the importance of the prefrontal cortex, the causes of its tiredness, and _________59_________. According to the research, the prefrontal cortex gets tired mainly because of _________60_________. To protect it, there are some great ways, such as having short breaks, setting up a single-tasking focus, and _________61_________. To sum up, you should pay more attention to your prefrontal cortex. The better you take care of it, _________62_________.
【答案】59. the ways to protect it
60. stress and multitasking/being under stress and doing many tasks together
61. writing free thoughts down/writing down free thoughts/writing down sudden thoughts/writing distracting thoughts/writing down free/sudden ideas
62. the calmer life you will live/have
故填the ways to protect it。
【60题详解】
根据第二段中“Research shows that the prefrontal cortex is the first part to get tired when you’re stressed.”及“when you try to multitask... your attention can drop”可知,前额叶皮层疲劳的主要原因是压力和多任务。
【61题详解】
分析句子结构,设空处与having...和setting up...并列,作such as的宾语,需用动名词短语。根据第三段中“It is also a good choice to write down your free thoughts.”可知,写下随意的想法也是保护方法之一。可填writing free thoughts down/writing down free thoughts/writing down sudden thoughts/writing distracting thoughts/writing down free/sudden ideas。
【62题详解】
分析句子结构,此处考查“the+比较级..., the+比较级...”句型,表示“越……,就越……”,需用形容词比较级。根据最后一段中“If you treat it well, it will help you to live a calm life.”可知,越照顾好它,生活越平静。将形容词calm变为比较级calmer,构成the calmer life you will live/have。

According to the chart, the rate of teenagers under stress has risen steadily from 13.4% in 2016 to 25.0% in 2025, which shows that more and more students are facing pressure, especially as we enter Junior 3. However, we don’t have to be afraid. There are ways to deal with it.
First, we should listen carefully in class and finish daily tasks on time, because finishing work early can reduce our worry. What’s more, it is important to ask for help when we feel lost—talk to your teachers, parents, or classmates who can offer support. Moreover, health is the first wealth. Forming healthy habits, like enough sleep and regular exercise, can bring a brand new me.
Therefore, instead of fearing failure, let’s focus on small progress and support each other. As long as we stay positive and work hard together, we can turn pressure into power and achieve our goals!

Baduanjin, also known as “Eight Pieces of Brocade”, is a traditional Chinese exercise. It is one of the most common forms of Chinese qigong. It is said that the exercise started in the Song Dynasty (朝代) over 800 years ago. The name “Baduanjin” comes from the brocade, a type of beautiful and colorful silk, suggesting that the movements are as smooth as silk.
Unlike intense sports like running or basketball, Baduanjin is gentle and slow. It mixes physical movements with deep breathing and full attention. Since it needs no tools and only a small space, it is very popular among people of all ages.
The exercise is made up of eight separate movements. Each movement focuses on a different part of the body and internal organs (内脏器官). For example, the first movement, “Two Hands Hold up the Heavens”, helps to open up your body and make your stomach stronger. Another movement, “Drawing the Bow Shoot the Eagle”, is good for your lungs (肺) and shoulders.
