②“Stars fear bright city lights, but a song always helps,” Grandma says. She hugs me and sings softly in her low and beautiful voice.
③But stars are still not there. I move closer in her arms, wishing to stay in her warmth as much as I wish to see at least one star.
④“Sleep now, Sally, or tomorrow won’t come!” She kisses my hair and asks me to go to bed.
⑤The next day, I wake up and take the lift with Grandma. On the fourth floor, the lift stops suddenly and it becomes dark. My heart beats fast. Grandma presses the bell and learns that the power is off along the whole street.
⑥Grandma holds my hands, and we sing together in the dark lift. Soon, Mr. Smith comes and helps us get out safely. Grandma takes my hand, and we walk down the stairs to the first floor.
⑦“Am I still going to school?”
⑧“School has power, dear.” She holds my hand again! And I am not late for school.

Mark Bittman is a famous cookbook writer. He has spent many years helping people learn to cook. Now he is helping kids feel more confident in the kitchen. He has created a special book called How to Cook Everything: The Kids’ Edition. It is a simpler version (版本) of his popular cookbook.
Bittman grew up in New York City, where he tried many different kinds of food. He has always loved food, but he didn’t start cooking until college.
While studying at Clark University, Bittman was unhappy with the school dining hall food. So he taught himself to cook. This shows that with hard work, anyone can learn new skills.
After college, Bittman turned his love for food into a writing career. He worked for a local newspaper and later became a food writer for The New York Times, where he worked for 25 years. He has written over 30 books. He is best known for How to Cook Everything (1998). Because of its success, he made other versions, including one for kids.
“The goal is not to have kids cook perfectly but to have kids cook at all,” Bittman told The Week Junior. He hopes the book brings families together and helps them eat healthier food instead of too many ready-made meals.
The Kids’ Edition helps young cooks learn basic skills step by step. It has many fun and easy recipes like French toast and chicken noodle soup. Bittman’s favorite dish in the book is egg pizza.
Bittman wants to encourage young people to cook for themselves. His best advice for home cooks is simple: “Cook what you like.”
23. When did Bittman start learning to cook by himself?
A. When he was a child in New York.
B. When he worked at a newspaper.
C. When he was studying at a university.
D. When he wrote his first cookbook.
24. What did Mark Bittman do to help young kids?
A. He taught kids to cook at school for free.
B. He wrote a special cookbook just for kids.
C. He opened cooking clubs in many schools.
D. He made videos about easy home cooking.
25. What information can we get from the passage?
A. Bittman has worked as a food writer for a long time.
B. Bittman was good at writing when he was a child.
C. Bittman wrote most of his books for young people.
D. Bittman thinks ready-made meals are better for kids.
26. What does the writer of this passage try to do?
A. To introduce Mark Bittman and his new cookbook for kids.
B. To teach kids how to make egg pizza at home.
C. To compare different kinds of cookbooks.
D. To explain why college food is unhealthy.

①Dancing is fun. And a new study shows it can also help you relax and improve your health. Many scientists have studied the good effects of dancing. Some even call it a “stress vaccine” — something that helps protect you from stress.
②A team of researchers wanted to find out why dancing makes us feel better. So they looked at many studies from different areas, including how the brain works, how the body works, and how people lived in the past.
③The team found that dancing is helpful because it has rhythm (节奏), music, movement, and social connection. Dancing to music is better for relaxing than just listening to music, because you are doing something active. Also, dancing with a partner or in a group is common in many cultures. It helps people feel connected and united. This can make your body release something that helps you feel more confident and positive.
④“Getting people to move together can make them feel like they belong and support each other. It also helps them deal with stress better,” said Jonathan Skinner, one of the researchers. He and his team suggest that people should try to include dancing in their weekly plans. Dancing together not only keeps us healthy but also brings us closer as a community.
27. Where did the researchers look for information according to the passage?
A. From cultural reports. B. From different studies. C. From music books. D. From dance classes.
28. What does the word “release” in Paragraph ③ most probably mean?
A. Send out. B. Come back. C. Take back. D. Find out.
29. How does dancing with others make people feel according to the passage?
A. Tired. B. Lonely. C. Connected. D. Silly.
30. Which is the best title for the passage?

Have you ever heard of the old man and the sea? Hemingway began to write IT in one hundred fifty. IT came out in one thousand hundred and fifty two. After one year, I won the bullet surprise. The story is about an old Fishermen named santiago. One day, santiago tried his best to catch a huge fish unluckily on his way back, sharks at ted, and left nothing but bones. Though he lost the fish, he was brave and didn't give up. When I read this book for the first time, I found how hard santa go for, but the second time I learned something new. A man can fail many times, but shouldn't give up easily. I think it's a book that everyone should read, no matter how old you are. IT teaches us to face problems and never give up, even when there seems to be no hope. So today, I really want to recommend this book to all of you. If you haven't read IT yet, give IT a try.
