For thousands of years, colour has helped show our personality. But why is there so little colour in our buildings today?
One reason is that modern architecture (建筑) prefers to show raw building materials like steel and concrete. This style often uses only greys and whites, which is different from the colourful buildings of the past. In ancient times, colours were full of cultural meanings, especially in Chinese architecture.
Red was the most important colour. It represented happiness, good luck, and power. This is why you can see it on the walls, gates, and pillars of the Forbidden City. It was also used in important celebrations like weddings and the New Year, bringing a festive and powerful feeling.
Yellow was a special colour reserved only for the emperor. It represented the strongest power of the ruler and his connection to heaven and earth. The most famous example is the shining yellow-glazed tiles (琉璃瓦) on the roofs of the Forbidden City’s main halls, making the buildings stand out grandly.
Blue was a colour for the heavens. It was believed to bring heavenly blessings and good luck. The Temple of Heaven is the best example, where the blue tiles make the temple look like it’s part of the sky.
White was often used as a background colour to make other colours look more vibrant. It represented purity and elegance. The White Dagoba in Beihai Park is a perfect example. Its white structure against the blue sky and green trees creates a peaceful and beautiful scene.
Beijing’s ancient architecture shows that colour is a powerful tool. It can send social messages and preserve cultural heritage. Using colour in our buildings today could give them more unique character and meaning. Maybe it’s time to bring more colours back!
34. If you have a bird’s-eye view of the Forbidden City, what colours do you mainly see?

“I was wondering if Patrick would sing The Power of Love during the show on Thanksgiving Day,” the community youth director left a voice message on our telephone.
My wife Catherine and I were excited about our five-year-old son’s first solo (独唱). Catherine carefully explained to Patrick how beautifully he sang and how much fun it would be. Patrick himself acted differently. “You know, Mom,” he said, “sometimes when I have to do something important, I get scared.”
We told him grown-ups feel that way, too, but it was up to him. He took only a few minutes. “Okay,” Patrick said. “I’ll do it.” Since he was a baby, Patrick has had a strong talent for music. Still, I could hardly believe that he sang into a microphone before hundreds of people at age five.
When that moment arrived, Catherine, our daughter Melanie and I sat in darkness as a spotlight found my son, standing alone at the microphone. He was dressed in white, with a pair of angel wings. Slowly but confidently, Patrick hit every note. As his voice washed over the people, he seemed a true angel. Patrick’s beautiful voice brought heavy tears to my eyes.
His song was soon over, and at my side, Catherine brushed away tears and Melanie sobbed, too. Outside, I received congratulations from our community members. I found my son who looked at me curiously. “You’re crying? Why, Dad?”
“I have to cry, for nothing else but your singing.”
Patrick smiled proudly and flew into my arms.
“I don’t understand,” he said into my shoulder. “But maybe you do have your reason to cry.”
38. How did Patrick act first when he knew he would give a solo show?
A. He was overexcited. B. He was less confident.
C. He showed no interest. D. He refused the invitation.
39. What does the underlined word it in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. If he could sing confidently.
B. If he has a strong talent for music.
C. If he knew grown-ups feel that way too.
D. If he would like to solo on Thanksgiving Day.
40. How do you understand the underlined sentence “Patrick hit every note” in paragraph 4?
A. He sang correctly and beautifully. B. He clapped his hand while singing.
C. He was too nervous to stand still. D. He nodded his head to his family.
41. Which sentence best expresses the theme of the story?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. The true beauty lies in overcoming one’s fears.
D
In 2022, a study about Earth’s plants was published. The researchers found that rising CO2 levels in the air created a “greening trend” and led to a greener planet with more plants than ever before.
Plants grow by absorbing (吸收) CO2, sunlight, and water during photosynthesis (光合作用). Rising CO2 levels make Earth warmer, change rainfalls and speed plant growth.
The findings suggest that greening is a good development. Farmers can grow more crops than usual. It also makes crops drought resistant, so they can grow in drier places. Larger crops provide more food, which is especially important in places where food is badly in need.
________. First, as CO2 speeds photosynthesis, it reduces plants’ ability to absorb nutrients (养分) from soil. Crops become less nourishing. Second, warmer temperatures and changes in rainfall influence growth rates and allow crop-damaging insects to get more. Third, weeds (杂草) and other unwanted plants grow fast. Fourth, higher temperatures in northern parts can make the growing season longer, so more plants grow. But crops in middle parts cannot grow well at higher temperatures, as a result, this area’s large populations could have less food.
Another influence of greening is that an increase in plant leaves reduces CO2 levels, which helps reduce warming. As plants absorb CO2, they reduce some of it in the air. Sea plants might absorb even more. But there is too much carbon in the air that plants can’t absorb all the extra CO2. Overall, plants remove only about 25 percent of CO2, the extra 75 percent remains and continues to speed warming.
It is clear that global (全球的) greening has a good influence on more productive farming and on plants’ ability to absorb some of the carbon. This can help farmers have good harvest. But increased plant growth cannot absorb all the CO2.
42. What does the underlined phrase “drought resistant” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. 防水的 B. 耐旱的 C. 抗虫的 D. 御寒的
43. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. While greening can also bring some worries.
B. Greening is of help to crop growth in some ways.
C. CO2 is necessary for plants during photosynthesis.
D. Rising CO2 levels have a good influence on crop growth.
44. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Rising CO2 levels can solve world hunger problems.
B. The speed of photosynthesis can influence the quality of crops.
C. As more and more plants grow, they will absorb all CO2 one day.
D. Crops around the world can always grow well at high temperatures.
45. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Global Warming B. Plants and CO2 C. Global Greening D. Amazing Photosynthesis

On a cold winter evening in Kentucky, a kind farmer named Mr. Shelby faced a terrible problem. He owed money to a cruel slave trader named Haley. To pay his debt (债), Mr. Shelby decided to sell two of his slaves: Uncle Tom, a good and honest man, and Harry, the young son of a maid named Eliza.
Later that night, Eliza overheard Mr. Shelby and Haley talking about the deal (交易). When she understood her son was going to be sold, she was filled with fear. She knew she had to act quickly to save her child.
Once the house was quiet and everyone was asleep, Eliza made a brave plan. She woke little Harry, and quietly left the house with him. Their journey was dangerous, and the night was cold. But Eliza’s love for her son made her strong. She decided to run away to the North, a place where slavery (奴隶制) was not allowed.
Meanwhile, Uncle Tom also learned about the news. He felt very sad because he had to leave his wife, children, and the only home he knew. He also felt great loyalty (忠诚) to Mr. Shelby. So he made a different choice. He decided to accept his fate, and hoped his decision might help save Mr. Shelby’s family from their troubles.
The next morning, Haley arrived and discovered that Eliza and Harry had escaped. He was very angry. But Tom was there, ready to go with him.
A. White and red. B. Blue and yellow. C. Yellow and red. D. Red and blue.
35. Why does the writer mention Beijing’s ancient architecture?
A. To compare ancient and modern building styles.
B. To describe the materials used in ancient architecture.
C. To prove they are the most famous buildings in China.
D. To explain how colours were used to express cultural meanings.
36. What’s the correct structure of the passage? (①=paragraph 1, ②=paragraph 2…)
A. ①|②③④⑤|⑥⑦ B. ①②|③④⑤⑥|⑦ C. ①|②③④⑤⑥|⑦ D. ①②|③④⑤|⑥⑦
37. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the colour of modern architecture?
A. Unpleased B. Hopeless C. Doubtful D. Supportive

【35题详解】
最后一段提到“Beijing’s ancient architecture shows that colour is a powerful tool. It can send social messages and preserve cultural heritage.”,直接说明提及古建筑是为了说明颜色表达文化含义。
【36题详解】
第一、二段引出话题并对比古今,第三至六段分别阐述四种颜色的文化意义,第七段总结呼吁,因此结构为总—分—总。
【37题详解】

C. He was too nervous to stand still. D. He nodded his head to his family.
41. Which sentence best expresses the theme of the story?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. The early bird catches the worm.

【40题详解】
根据第四段“Slowly but confidently... As his voice washed over the people, he seemed a true angel”可知,“hit every note”意为唱准了每一个音符,唱得正确且优美,从而打动了父亲。

【答案】42. B 43. A 44. B 45. C

【42题详解】
第三段画线短语后的句子“so they can grow in drier places”可知,这种作物能够在干旱环境中生存。
A选项“While greening can also bring some worries.”符合语境,起到了转折和引出下文的作用。
【44题详解】
第四段第一句“as CO2 speeds photosynthesis, it reduces plants’ ability to absorb nutrients…Crops become less nourishing”,二氧化碳加快光合作用速度,会让作物养分变少,说明光合作用速度会影响作物品质,B表述正确。

As Tom was taken away, he thought of Eliza, hoping that she would find freedom and safety. Growing Up as a Teenager
The teenage years are like a journey with both sunshine and rain. During this special time, we face challenges that help us grow.
One big challenge I met was preparing for the piano competition last year. I was very nervous because I had to perform in front of many people. I practiced for hours every day, but I still made mistakes. Sometimes I even wanted to give up.
To overcome this, I made a clear plan and practiced step by step. I also asked my teacher for advice. She told me to take a deep breath and believe in myself. On the day of the competition, I stood on the stage and played with all my heart. Although I was still nervous, I calmed myself down and finished successfully.
From this experience, I learned that practice makes perfect and that confidence is the key to success. It also taught me that challenges are not obstacles but stepping stones. In the future, I will face every difficulty bravely and never run away from it.
