Dear Jack,
I remember the moment — it truly hit me that your autism (自闭症) lasted forever. I had already mentally planned our trips up north with the boys. I was going to spend endless hours playing baseball with you — like Grandpa did with me.
When we said goodbye to kindergarten I knew it was real. I spent some time being sad. Now you are 8. You still have no words. We have never had one of those father-son moments I pictured when you were a baby. But I’m learning that’s OK. I still have unbelievable things to offer as your dad, even if they weren’t the things I originally expected.
You have taught me to be patient. You have taught me that it’s OK to be different and to be sad when life doesn’t go as planned. You have taught me that it is OK to talk about those feelings and fight for what is right. Stand up and say this is wrong, and encourage others to stand up for you and say the same.
My job on this earth is to create a world for you and other kids like you. Be the voice you don’t have, and build the kind of community which I want to see you grow up in. I used to shy a way from contacting people with disabilities or just not consider them. Before you were born, I was so caught up in my own world that I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. Now, I see things differently. I notice. You did that for me. And hope my example will do that for others.
Your mom and I have spent 8 years trying to find your voice. And honestly, we don’t know if we ever will. I promise you I will spend my life keeping you safe and making this world better for you.
24. To whom is the text written?

26. How does the author sound in the text?
A. Ashamed. B. Caring.
C. Regretful. D. Indifferent.
27. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
A Science. B. Entertainment.
C. Sports. D. Relationship.

We’ve all heard the predictions — flooding all over the shop; homes lost to storms; entire cities under water... And the climate emergency is only getting worse, which means the coming decades will likely see architects (建筑师) and town planners having to rethink entirely the way they design cities.
Some think we may even need brand-new cities, and many are looking to the sea for inspiration. Enter Danish star architect Bjarke Ingels and his uncommon Oceanix City project. This huge, six-sided, tsunami-resistant city would be fixed to the sea floor and be able to produce its own heat, power and water. Because it floats, it would move as the environment around it changes. As well as the hypothetical (假设的) Oceanix City, the architect has more clear plans. Biodiver City — yes, that’s its real name — would include three islands providing homes for up to 18, 000 people. Driving cars would not be allowed here. Boats would be people’s main means of transportation.
One clear disadvantage of these cities? They could only house a minority of the people who live in big cities. But experts think floating cities may be a way to relieve the climate crisis (危机). Architect Kunlé Adeyemi, who runs Amsterdam-based firm NLE, has already created several floating buildings, from schools to concert halls, which move with rising water levels. “Controlling water is going to be a major challenge for future cities,” he says, adding that “the issue of water resource is already shaping architecture practice, especially in Africa.”
But for Adeyemi, it’s not all darkness. He sees this as an opportunity to strengthen the “relationship between water, land and humans”. So perhaps floating cities aren’t just a weak and belated reaction to climate change. They could bring us closer to our planet, too.
28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To list future climate emergencies.
B. To show the harm of extreme climate change.
C. To introduce the background of designing future cities.
D. To give advice on how to protect cities from disasters.
29. Where will the Oceanix City be fixed?
A. In the deep sea. B. On the coast of the sea.
C. On the surface of the sea. D. In a place with little water.
30. What is the experts’ attitude toward the Oceanix City project?
A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful.
C. Unconfident. D. Positive.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Climate Change Will Worsen
B. Floating Cities Will Come Soon
C. Could Floating Cities Be the Future?
D. What Will Climate Change Cause in the Future?
D
In an effort to help eco-conscious consumers, a nonprofit group Free-Go in Geneva. Switzerland is making public fridges available, so restaurant owners, at-home cooks and others can use them to give away food before it goes bad. It’s part of a bigger effort by communities in Switzerland to do their part for the environment while helping to cut down on food waste.
The program costs about 840,000 to run each year and enjoys the support from both charity groups and the city government. It launched a year ago with a single fridge outside a community center in western Geneva and it now has four fridges, placed around town. A fifth one is planned before year’s end. Passers-by can grab fruit, vegetables, bread and other food from the fridges to take home for free.
Marine Delevaux is the project’s director. She said the food left in its fridges is generally snapped up within an hour after delivery. For health and legal reasons, no frozen foods, open food containers, prepared meals, or alcohol are permitted in the fridges. Contributors of food from the private sector—like restaurants—must promise to ensure the donated food is safe to eat.
Free-Go is also experimenting with scheduled pickups at apartment buildings to make it easier for residents to participate in the program. It has also set up a “hotline” that restauranteurs can use to call for getting back unused food. “Generally, when the food collected from shops and restaurants arrives in the morning, people are already waiting to help themselves,” Delevaux said, adding that the first Geneva fridge helped save some 3.2 tons of food from going to waste last year.
Because the food is free, and the donations can change, it’s uncertain what will turn up in the fridges. Some people receiving food might end up being disappointed.
Cuendet is a 54-year-old teacher. Just after leaving some vegetables that she grew, she said, “We have too much” and praised the program “because this neighborhood has a lot of need.”
32. What’s the goal of the nonprofit group Free-Go?
A. To enhance communities’ ties. B. To reduce food waste in Geneva.
C. To stress the importance of environment. D. To promote energy-saving fridges.
33. Which of the following can replace the underlined words “snapped up” in paragraph 3?
A. Taken away. B. Eaten up. C. Sought for. D. Charged for.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Citizens’ remarks on wasted food.
B. Local restaurants’ new functions.
C. Free-Go’s improvements and contributions.
D. Free-Go’s praise and encouragement for donors.
35. Why may some people be upset about the food?
A. There is a collection of junk food.
B. The taste of food always stays the same.
C. Some foods are out of the recommended date.
D. They might not get what they want or need.

When I started karate (空手道) class a few years ago, I didn’t know a single person. I felt ashamed of having no idea how to do any of the moves. Even though I liked the learning part, I did not like the feeling-worse-than-everyone part!
But one day after class while I was putting my shoes on, a girl named Abigail said, “That last kick we practiced is so hard for me, and you’re so good at it.”
“You must have confused me with someone else,” I replied. “I’m not good at any of it.”
“In that case, I’m in trouble,” she joked, “because you’re the one I stand behind and copy in class.”
I laughed, “Seriously?”
“Seriously!” she laughed, too. After that, we became great friends. However, a few months later when Abigail’s mom got a job in a different state and she had to move away, I was rather sad. I had a tough time dragging myself to karate for a while after that I missed Abigail so much.
Then, a girl named Ava joined my class. She was always quiet. Until one day we finally had a conversation.
“It must be weird (怪异的) being the new one in class.” I said.
“So weird!” said Ava. “You do things really differently than we did at my old dojo (柔道馆).”
I suddenly realized she’d been silent only because she was new. We started talking more, and we got along so well that we started hanging out after class. Then, almost a year later, guess who showed up at karate.
“This is so cool.” I said giving Abigail a huge hug. “What are you doing here?”
“My mom’s job in New York didn’t work out,” she explained. “So we got to move back.”
“That’s the best news ever!” I said. “You have to meet my dear friend Ava. And Ava, meet my dear friend Abigail.”
I put my arms around their shoulders. Feeling very excited, I told them I hoped we could get along well and be close friends, while Abigail and Ava stared at each other with some hesitation and an uncertain smile.

M: That’s nice of him. He must be a good coach, right?
W: To be honest, he’s not that great. My brother may be an excellent surfer, but he is impatient and doesn’t master suitable teaching methods, so he is not good at teaching others to surf.
M: Well, why don’t you call me to go with you next time? I’d be willing to give it a shot. I know a thing or two about surfing.
W: Thanks. But as far as I’m concerned, I don’ think I will pick up the surfboard again. Surfing is just too hard for me.
M: Come on Emily, try again. I’m free these two days.
W: Okay, but I just had a terrible experience the day before yesterday. Let’s do that tomorrow.

Dear Jack,
I remember the moment — it truly hit me that your autism (自闭症) lasted forever.

由第二段最后一句“I still have unbelievable things to offer as your dad, even if they weren’t the things I originally expected.”(作为你的父亲,我仍然有很多不可思议的东西可以提供给你,即使它们不是我最初期望的那样)中的“as your dad”可知,作者是Jack的爸爸,Jack是作者的儿子,所以这封信是写给作者儿子的。故选A项。
由倒数第二段中句子“I used to shy away from contacting people with disabilities or just not consider them.”(我过去常常回避与残疾人接触,或者根本不考虑他们。)和“Before you were born, I was so caught up in my own world that I probably wouldn’t have even noticed. Now, I see things differently. I notice.”(在你出生之前,我太沉迷于自己的世界了,我可能都没有注意到。现在,我的看法不同了。我注意到了)可知,作者在儿子出生之前常回避与残疾人接触,或者干脆不考虑他们,现在作者的看法不同了,他注意到了残疾人,所以作者改变了对残疾人的看法,故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。由第三段的句子“You have taught me to be patient. You have taught me that it’s OK to be different and to be sad when life doesn’t go as planned.”(你教会了我要有耐心。

C 29. A 30. D 31. C
根据第一段的“We’ve all heard the predictions—flooding all over the shop; homes lost to storms; entire cities under water... And the climate emergency is only getting worse, which means the coming decades will likely see architects (建筑师) and town planners having to rethink entirely the way they design cities.(我们都听说过这些预测——商店里到处都是洪水;在风暴中失去的房屋;整个城市都在水下……
根据第二段的“This huge, six-sided, tsunami-resistant city would be fixed to the sea floor and be able to produce its own heat, power and water. (这座巨大的六面抗海啸城市将被固定在海底,能够产生自己的热量、电力和水)”可知,Oceanix City将会被固定在海底,即深海中。故选A。
根据第三段的“But experts think floating cities may be a way to relieve the climate crisis (危机).(但专家认为,浮动城市可能是缓解气候危机的一种方式)”可知,专家们认为漂浮城市可能是缓解气候危机的一种方式。
根据第一段根据第一段的“We’ve all heard the predictions—flooding all over the shop; homes lost to storms; entire cities under water... And the climate emergency is only getting worse, which means the coming decades will likely see architects (建筑师) and town planners having to rethink entirely the way they design cities.(我们都听说过这些预测——商店里到处都是洪水;在风暴中失去的房屋;整个城市都在水下……气候紧急情况只会变得更糟,这意味着在未来几十年里,建筑师和城市规划者可能不得不重新思考他们设计城市的方式)”以及通读全文可知,气候变化可能会给人们的生活带来巨大的威胁,一些建筑专家设想可以建造漂浮城市,尽管建设漂浮城市面临重大的挑战,但这一提议有望帮助人们应对未来的气候危机。因此,C项“漂浮城市会成为未来吗?”是文章的最佳标题。故选C。
B Local restaurants’ new functions.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D
根据第一段中的“It’s part of a bigger effort by communities in Switzerland to do their part for the environment while helping to cut down on food waste.(这是瑞士社区在帮助减少食物浪费的同时为环境尽一份力的更大努力的一部分。)”
根据划线短语前后“She said the food left in its fridges is generally(她说留在冰箱的物品一般情况会被……)”和“within an hour after delivery.(在送货后一个小时内)”可知,此处指的是留在冰箱里的食物通常在留下后一小时内被……,结合划线短语后的“For health and legal reasons, no frozen foods, open food containers, prepared meals, or alcohol are permitted in the fridges.(出于健康和法律原因,冰箱里不允许存放冷冻食品、开放式食品容器、预制食品或酒精。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Free-Go is also experimenting with scheduled pickups at apartment buildings to make it easier for residents to participate in the program. It has also set up a “hotline” that restauranteurs can use to call for getting back unused food.(Free-Go也在尝试在公寓楼里安排接送,让居民更容易参与到这个项目中来。它还设立了一条“热线”,餐馆老板可以利用这条热线打电话取回未食用的食物)”可知,Free-Go 还在尝试在公寓楼进行定时接送服务,还设立了一条“热线”,这些举措不仅方便了居民,而且减少了食物浪费由此可推知,本段主要谈论的是Free-Go的改进及贡献。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Because the food is free, and the donations can change, it’s uncertain what will turn up in the fridges. Some people receiving food might end up being disappointed.(因为食物是免费的,而且捐赠可以改变,所以不确定冰箱里会有什么。一些收到食物的人最终可能会感到失望。)”可知,食物是免费且捐赠还可以改变,冰箱里有什么不会总是很清楚,由此可知,一些接受食物的人可能无法得到他们想要或需要的东西。故选D项。

“This is so cool.” I said, giving Abigail a huge hug.

Things seemed all right at first. However, with time going by, conflicts emerged. Abigail always complained that every time I hung out with Ava, she was left alone, while Ava said that I paid more attention to Abigail, which drove her crazy, believing that our friendship was not what it used to be. Trapped in the dilemma, I, enveloped by the sense of sadness, still felt confused why things turned out to be that complicated, not knowing how to tackle the problem. Worse still, karate even became the most frightening thing to me.
One day, I simply could not take it anymore. With tears streaming down my cheeks, I stopped them from arguing and said with a deep sigh, “Why can’t you get along with each other well? Both of you are my best friends.” Hearing my words, they didn’t utter a single word, sinking into a deep silence. After what seemed like a century, Ava finally placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around Abigail’s shoulders. Seeing this scene, I gasped with relief and burst into laughter.
