Inventor Clarence Birdseye was born in New York in 1886. From a young age, he was interested in animals and plants and in 1906, Birdseye went to college. However, two years later, he left college for family reasons. Then he took a job and worked for the US government.
In 1912, Birdseye moved to Labrador (now in Canada). He stayed there until 1915. When he was in Labrador, Birdseye watched local people fishing through holes in an icy lake. As they pulled out fish, the fish at once froze in the very cold air. He noticed that they could be kept for long periods and, when people wanted some to eat, they could defrost (解冻) them without losing any of the freshness. Birdseye realized that cooling food very quickly was the key to keeping its freshness. This was easy in very cold environments. In warmer environments, people had to freeze food slowly. When food is frozen in this way, ice crystals (冰晶) start to grow inside it. These change the food’s taste. In order to stop them from growing, Birdseye spent years working out how to cool food quickly. Then he began to wonder how this freezing method might work with fresh vegetables and other food like fish and meat.
After a lot of efforts, in the late 1920s, Birdseye developed a machine to freeze food fast in the US. Later, he introduced the first line of frozen food for public sale. Frozen food began to be widely accepted.
Birdseye died in 1956. Today people consider him as the father of the modern frozen food industry.
38. When Birdseye was young, he ________.
A. loved animals and plants B. decided to visit Canada one day
C. was interested in inventing things D. dreamed of working for the US government
39. From the local people in Labrador, Birdseye learned a new way to ________.
A. fish B. freeze food to keep it fresh C. cook fish D. look for food in cold environments
40. What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Knives B. Vegetables C. Ice crystals D. High temperatures
41. From the last two paragraphs, we can learn that Birdseye ________.
A. died at the age of 79 B. began to sell frozen food in 1915
C. invented a freezing machine in Canada D. was a pioneer of the modern frozen food industry
42. This passage is developed ________.
A. by giving examples B. by making comparisons
C. by following the order of time D. by describing the work process
【答案】38. A 39. B 40. C 41. D 42. C
根据第一段第二句“From a young age, he was interested in animals and plants...”可知,Birdseye从小就对动植物感兴趣。

【41题详解】
根据最后一段“Today people consider him as the father of the modern frozen food industry.”
