Dr. William Farber is an animal doctor. He gave acupuncture (针灸) to a rabbit. After that, he says, “I am not crazy. I am ahead of my time.” Some other doctors laugh at his unusual methods, but Farber believes he will have the last laugh. He is one of a growing number of American animal doctors who practice “holistic” medicine (整体医学)—using Western treatments together with acupuncture and herbal medicine (草药).
Farber started as a normal doctor. Twenty years ago, he had serious back pain. Drugs didn’t help, but acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, worked after just two or three treatments. So he learned the skill and began using it on pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog, Charlie, had a serious heart problem. After a heart attack, Tindale was ready to put him to sleep. But Farber’s treatments helped Charlie live five more months. Priscilla Dewing says her horse, Nappy, moves more easily after the treatment.
Farber believes holistic medicine will have a bright future. Since 1982, the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700 members. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” Farber says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”
29. What do other doctors think of Farber?
A. Clever. B. Strict. C. Strange. D. Interesting.
30. Why did Farber begin to use acupuncture on pets?
A. Because it helped solve his back pain problem.
B. Because he learned it in China for a long time.
C. Because he thinks drugs are harmful to some pets.
D. Because he wanted to make more money to save his pet.
31. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The effects of Farber’s methods on pets.
B. Some unusual illnesses that pets once had.
C. The reasons why Farber became an animal doctor.
D. Different opinions on holistic medicine treatments.
32. What is the best title of the text?
A. Warm Stories about Nappy B. An Unusual Animal Doctor
C. The History of Acupuncture D. Great Jobs in the Future.
【答案】29. C 30. A 31. A 32. B

Have you ever had food delivered (传送) by a robot? Were they smart enough? One night, a UCLA teacher Sean Hecht saw something interesting when he was walking in the school. Four delivery robots lined up in the middle of the road. The front robot had stopped because a bike was left in its way. People tried to help by moving the bike, but the leading robot didn’t move. Why? It won’t go until all the people stop crossing in front of it.
“This is our future, I guess.” Hecht said. Being a delivery robot is not easy. In America, they have been kicked by angry people, and hit by heavy doors. Online videos also show them falling down stairs and hitting something hard.
There are still problems to solve. Delivery robots are not allowed in some cities like New York and San Francisco because of safety. A government officer from Michigan also worried that robots could be dangerous if they break down while working.
Delivery robots are not the same as delivery cars. They can only carry small objects and must stay close to a charging station. This makes them hard to use in faraway areas. Also, while the robots run on electricity, that electricity may not come from clean energy.
People like contactless (无接触) delivery, which has increased need for these robots. But they still have a long way to go before they can prove that they are good enough to deal with the real world.
33. Why did the robots still stop on the road in the end?
A. Because they were completely broken and couldn’t move.
B. Because people on the roads are making videos of them.
C. Because people around them didn’t want to give a hand.
D. Because they were waiting for people to stop walking in front of them.
34. What problems do delivery robots face according to the text?
① accidents on the way
② not enough charging stations
③ not allowed in some cities
④ too small to deliver food
⑤ the risk of breaking down
A. ①③⑤ B. ①②④ C. ②④⑤ D. ①②③
35. Which of the following thoughts would the writer probably agree with?
A. Fewer and fewer people like contactless delivery.
B. Delivery robots are not fully ready for the real life.
C. The use of delivery robots is good for the environment.
D. Delivery robots have more advantages than disadvantages.
【答案】33. D 34. A 35. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍配送机器人的真实场景、现存各类使用难题,指出其暂未完全适配现实生活。
【33题详解】

【34题详解】
第二段提到:“kicked by angry people, and hit by heavy doors...falling down stairs”说明途中发生事故,①正确;第三段提到:“Delivery robots are not allowed in some cities”说明某些城市不允许,③正确;第三段提到:“worried that robots could be dangerous if they break down”说明故障风险,⑤正确。
【35题详解】
文章结尾提到“But they still have a long way to go before they can prove that they are good enough to deal with the real world.”,说明机器人还有很长路要走,才能证明足以应对现实世界。由此可知,配送机器人尚未完全适配现实生活。
D
Small plastic particles (微粒) in water have become one of the biggest problems for human health. A team of Chinese scientists has found a new way to remove the plastic particles from water.
The research came out in a magazine called Science Advances. It described a special foam (泡沫) that can absorb (吸收) up to 99.8% of the particles in its first use! The best part is that it can be used again and again. What’s even better is that when it’s no longer needed, it can turn into harmless (无害的) things!
The researchers from Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology made this foam from sea life and cotton. The foam is full of small holes, which helps it absorb different kinds of particles. These particles often come from lots of things like electronics (电子产品), plastic products, and clothes.
To test how well the foam works, the scientists got water from different places in the real world. They found that the foam absorbed almost all the particles in its first use. Even after using the foam five times, it still cleared away more than 95% of the particles.
The scientists believe that using natural materials like this foam is a really smart and low-cost way to solve the problem of harmful particles in water. They hope to use this technology in real-world water treatment or home water purifiers (净化器) in the near future.
36. What does the underlined word “remove” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Cut down. B. Look over. C. Leave out. D. Take away.
37. Which of the following is one of the foam’s advantages?
A. It can be used many times. B. It can help recycle plastic products.
C. It can be easily broken down in the air. D. It can change harmful particles into electronics.
38. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The risks of making the foam. B. The test results of the foam.
C. The foam is made from sea life and cotton. D. The places where test water was collected.
39. What do the researchers hope to do in the near future?
A. Use this technology in the real world.
B. Create more safe materials for humans.
C. Make the foam break down more quickly in air.
D. Develop more types of foam from plastic products.
【答案】36. D 37. A 38. B 39. A

What is it?
The Philippine eagle is the national bird of the Philippines and lives in the forests of the country. Its food includes snakes and other animals like rats (老鼠) and monkeys.
What is the problem?
Sadly, the Philippine eagle is in danger now. The main problem is human activities, such as farming, which lead to the loss of their homes.
How can you help?
We can find more useful information on the Philippine Eagle Foundation’s website. The site shows us how we can help protect these amazing birds. For example, we can “adopt (领养)” an eagle. This is a really cool way to support their protection.
