Teacher: Welcome to this week’s book club. Our book this week is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, about a girl Dorothy. A strong wind takes her and her dog Toto from home to the magical Land of Oz. To go back, she needs help from the Great Wizard Oz. On the way, she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion—they also want the wizard’s help: the Scarecrow wants a brain, the Woodman a heart, the Lion courage. They go together, and many exciting things happen. Now, Emma, what do you think of the book?
Emma: I love Dorothy and her friends’ exciting story. But the most interesting part is: each wants something from the wizard, but finally finds it in themselves.
Teacher: Can you give an example?
Emma: My favorite character, the Scarecrow. He thinks he’s not clever and wants a brain, but he always finds a way out. He even has the idea to make a boat to cross a river. He’s clever—he just doesn’t know it.
Ethan: So we already have those qualities, and just need to find them?
Emma: Yes, that’s the story’s key idea. It’s a great book about finding our own values.
Teacher: You’re right. We just need to learn more about ourselves and recognize the good qualities we already have, like the book’s characters.

Do you often forget to drink water between classes? Try the new “Smart Cup”—a water bottle that talks to you! When it glows (发光) green, it means “Good job”. When it turns orange, it’s saying “Time to drink!” It even connects to your phone’s health app.
This smart cup acts like a mini teacher. Take a photo of your lunch, and it checks if you need more vegetables or protein (蛋白质). Want to eat ice cream? The bottle might say, “Try yogurt first”. Every Monday, the app shows the intake you drink, like “8L this week”. Drink enough water for 5 days, and you can get a funny cartoon sticker (贴纸) in the app.
Chen Kai, a 7th grader from Shanghai, says, “I even get free cookies with enough stickers”. What’s cooler? It turns classmates into health partners. When someone’s cup turns orange, his classmates will say, “Drink up”. School nurse Dr. Chen says, “It’s like having a health teacher in your bag.” But Dr. Li tells everyone, “Your cup can’t do sit-ups for you! Play baseball or jog with friends every day.” Teen Health magazine found 70% of Smart Cup users eat more fruits. “It’s like a game!” says Chen Kai, shaking his glowing bottle. “Now I even finish all the carrots in my lunchbox!”

When I was very young, my dad had the first telephone in our neighborhood. I still remember the shiny receiver in the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but I knew that a wonderful person lived inside it—her name was Information Please. She could give anybody’s number and the right time.
One day, my mom was out. I hit my finger and it hurt a lot. No one was home to help me. So I thought of the telephone! I called her. A soft voice said, “Information Please.” I cried and told her about my finger. She told me to put ice on it. After that, I called her for everything—help with geography, or homework, and even what my small pet ate.
When my pet bird died, I called her and cried, “Why do birds sing so well and make everyone happy, but died at last?” She said softly, “Paul, remember there are other worlds to sing in.” Those words made me feel better. At age 9, we moved to Boston. I missed the old phone and never forgot her.
Years later, my plane stopped in Seattle. I called the operator (接线员) for help. To my surprise, Sally answered! I asked her to spell “fix”, just like when I was little. She laughed and said my calls made her happy all day— she had no kids, so she hoped to talk with me.
Three months later, I called again. A different voice said Sally had died of illness. She left a message: “Tell Paul there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll understand.”
11. What was Sally’s job?
A. A pet care worker. B. A children’s helper.
C. A telephone operator. D. A primary school teacher.
12. Where did the writer move at the age 9?
A. Seattle. B. Boston. C. His hometown. D. A new neighborhood.

A. Sally didn’t like talking B. Sally liked singing songs
C. the writer’s call made Sally happy D. the writer never called after moving
14. What does “there are other worlds to sing in” mean in the passage?
A. Birds fly to magical places when they die.
B. Imagine happy places when you are sad.
C. Birds should be set free to sing in nature.
D. Love and happiness don’t stop with death.
15. What could be the best title for the story?
A. A Trip Back to Hometown B. The Kind Voice on the Phone

阅读下面短文,根据短文后各题要求作答。
“My parents always tell me what I should do and what I shouldn’t do. They give me too much advice. It sometimes makes me a little angry,” said Zhang Hua. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were young. Why do some parents seem unfriendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the most important reasons is when people become parents, they often worry about too many things. They worry about everything about you. They worry about your choice of friends, the food you eat, your study at school, how much sleep you get and so on. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone them if you get home later than usual. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Talk about your ideas with them and they may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to understand your parents. When you become a parent, these things may help you to get on with your children.
