Have you ever read a passage and felt confused (困惑) about what the writer really means? Good readers don’t just look at the words—they think about the writer’s aim and point of view. These skills help you understand more and enjoy reading more.
A writer’s aim is the reason why he writes something. Most writers write for three main reasons: to educate, to persuade, or to entertain (娱乐). When you read a news article or a science textbook, the writer’s aim is to educate—to give you facts and explain how things work. When you see an advertisement for a new phone or a political speech, the writer wants to persuade you—to agree with an opinion or buy a product. When you read a funny story or an interesting novel, the writer’s aim is to entertain—to make you laugh or take you on an adventure.
The other useful skill is understanding the writer’s point of view. Ask yourself: Is the writer sharing facts or opinions? Facts are statements that can be proved true or false. For example, “China has over 1.4 billion people” is a fact. Opinions are what someone believes or feels. “Summer is the best season” is an opinion because not everyone agrees. Knowing the difference helps you decide whether to trust what you read.
These skills will make you a smarter reader. Next time you read something, ask yourself: “Why did the writer write this? What is his point of view?” Then you will have a better understanding of it.
29. What does the underlined word “persuade” most likely mean?
A. Making someone laugh. B. Explaining how things work.
C. Giving someone information. D. Making someone agree or do things.
30. Which is a FACT according to the passage?
A. Learning English is easy. B. Summer is the best season
C. Reading is quite interesting. D. China has over 1.4 billion people.
31. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Becoming a Smarter Reader B. Facts and Opinions in Reading
C. How to Write a Science Textbook D. The Importance of Reading Novels
【答案】29. D 30. D 31. A

【导语】本文介绍了成为优秀读者的两个关键技能:理解作者的写作目的和读懂作者的立场观点。

On Mother’ s Day 2026, many beautiful woolen weavings (编织品) and cloisonne (景泰蓝) works were on show in Beijing. They were all created by women who shared a common name: Modou Mama, or Model Mothers.
Twenty years ago, a dying mother named Zhou Lihong opened a small online shop to save money for her daughter. Her touching story moved thousands of volunteers, who kept the shop running for twenty years. This act of motherly love later grew into a nationwide charity project called “Model Mother”. “Jummy, I’m not sure I can focus on class today,” Flanky said. “I hope I won’t be too excited.”
I knew I would have a hard time, too. I rushed through my maths homework and made lots of mistakes. At dinner, I tried to see if Gemini had found the note on her bed. She seemed not to know about it and just ate her rice quietly.
By bedtime, I fell asleep as soon as I lay down. Gemini gently woke me up. “It’s time.” I took a small bag of snacks I had bought from Caro’s store.
We tiptoed (蹑手蹑脚地走) to the storage room. The moon was silent as if it were helping us. Inside, a single torch shone on a blanket. We hid behind piles of suitcases.
“So did you all know that the head teacher invited Tope to River School because she saw her act in a village play?” I asked.
“Yes, Tope is on a scholarship (奖学金),” Lola said. “But how can we help Caro?”
I took a deep breath. “Tope says Caro can dance in the drama club. If the head teacher sees her dance, maybe she will get a scholarship, too.”
“But Caro is Matron’s maid (女仆),” Gemini said. “She can’t just leave.”
Bukky thought for a moment. “I can pretend to be sick. A cold. A fever. Anything… Matron will have to stay with me in the sickbay (医务室). Then Caro can go out secretly.”
“That’s smart!” Flanky said. She touched a piece of wood for good luck. “It will work.”
We gave each other high fives. It was only a beginning, but we were all excited.
“Remember,” I whispered, “we must be very careful. No one can know.”
“We won’t tell,” everyone said.
As we tiptoed back to our rooms, I felt proud. We were coming together to help a friend.
And maybe, just maybe, Caro would get the chance she deserved.

Among the usual sounds of office work, a familiar noise fills the air in a government service hall in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province—the gentle whir of coffee machines and the soft hiss of steam (蒸汽).
But this is not a common shop. It is a “silent cafe”, where workers communicate through warm smiles and sign language. This cafe is set up by the local government to help disabled people. Run by a famous brand Cotti Coffee, it gives chances to deaf people in the city, helping them find jobs and gain more public attention.
How does the cafe work? Customers place orders by scanning a QR code or using the shop’s online platform, making face-to-face talks less necessary for any last-minute order changes, the cafe is equipped with (配备) a tablet featuring voice-recognition software (语音识别软件) and a writing board. The model has grown in popularity and made the cafe a lively place. Delivery drivers—usually a rare sight inside a government building—are regular visitors, carrying takeout orders across Huai’an.
For Wang Jiali, working at the cafe has been life-changing. The 39-year-old lady, who has serious hearing loss, first discovered the shop while visiting the government hall two years ago. With no experience, she received training and learned to manage the full menu before working. Now, she and her team prepare up to 200 drinks every day. The work is demanding, and for Wang and her colleagues, it comes with an additional, unseen challenge. Misunderstandings sometimes happen, and they have to deal with them. This is because having a cafe where all the staff are deaf is still something quite new in public places.

The charity project was started by the Red Cross Society of China and Alibaba Group. It held its 20th birthday celebration with an event themed “Model Mothers Bloom, Beautiful Journey Together.” The aim of this project is to help mothers in need support themselves through online businesses and handicrafts.
