Growing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted to do and it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. In high school, I hated writing essays. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my scattered thoughts into fluent sentences and I often received papers marked with numerous corrections. I began to wonder if I was simply not cut out for writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
I focused instead on my love for math and science. I took comfort there, knowing objective truth could be found if I searched methodically. In college, I studied engineering and joined a research lab to gain hands-on experience. My first project was to improve the efficiency of a magnetic component. Despite initial disappointing results, I continued through numerous designs. Eventually, we developed a design that halved energy losses. I was delighted — until my professor told me to write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted to become a researcher, I would need to spend time penning papers. But I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was searching for an efficient design?”
I polished my paper’s outline into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Though my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjoyed the process of improving it. Writing has since become one of my favorite parts of research, helping me organize my thoughts. I’ve even started writing popular science articles, which I never could have imagined during my early struggles with essays.

A.Both require trial and error. B.Both consume time and money.
C.Both offer promotion and reputation. D.Both involve burden and stress.
27.What helped the author improve writing?
A.Discovering objective standards in writing.
B.Following good examples of other students.
C.Publishing several academic papers successfully.
D.Constantly working on writing and improving.

Many believe zoos provide a safe environment for animals, free from survival challenges. However, this isn’t the case for the largest land animals, elephants, which frequently experience health issues in captivity (监禁), including diseases, joint problems, and behavioral changes, often leading to having no babies.
A groundbreaking study has analyzed four decades of data on 800 elephants from Africa and Asia living in European zoos. The research, conducted by a team of scientists, compared the lifespans of these zoo-born elephants with those of thousands of wild female elephants in Africa and Asian elephants working in logging camps over a similar period.
To learn more about how captivity affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared the life spans of female elephants born in zoos with female elephants living outdoors in their native lands. Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals in their care, documenting factors such as birth dates, illnesses, weight and death. The findings were striking: female African elephants born in captivity had an average lifespan of 16.9 years, but their wild ones who died of natural causes lived to an average age of 56 years — more than three times longer. A similar trend was observed in Asian elephants, with zoo-born females living an average of 18.9 years compared to 41.7 years for those in logging camps.
The reasons behind these differences are not yet fully understood. Georgia Mason, a biologist from the University of Guelph in Canada who led the study, suspects that stress and obesity may be significant factors. Elephants in zoos do not engage in the same level of physical activity as they would in the wild, leading to obesity in many cases. Additionally, the social structures of elephants in captivity differ greatly from those in the wild, where they typically live in large groups and family groups.
Another revelation (启示) from the study was that Asian elephants born in zoos had a higher likelihood of dying early compared to those captured in the wild and brought to zoos. Mason assumes that stress experienced by mothers in captivity could result in children that are less adaptive and more likely to die early.
The implications of this study are profound (深刻的), particularly concerning the acquisition of more elephants for zoo populations. While some endangered species in zoos manage to reproduce and maintain healthy numbers, elephants seem to be an exception. The study highlights the need for further research into the well-being of elephants in captivity and the potential challenges of sustaining their populations in zoos.
28. What is the main focus of the study mentioned in the passage?
A. Elephant Lifespans: Captivity against Wild. B. Analyzing elephant social structures in zoos.
C. Studying the effects of obesity on elephants. D. Investigating the causes of elephant stress.
29. Why might elephants in zoos have a shorter lifespan compared to wild elephants?
A. They have more eaters in zoos. B. They face increased stress and obesity.
C. They are fed better in zoos. D. They are less active in zoos.
30. What is the average lifespan of wild female African elephants?
A. 16.9 years. B. 56 years. C. 18.9 years. D. 41.7 years.
31. What conclusion can be drawn about the future of elephants in zoos?
A. Elephants should not be kept in zoos.
B. Zoos should focus on breeding more elephants.
C. Zoos need to improve elephant care to increase lifespans.
D. The study supports the inclusion of more elephants in zoos.
D
If you use the internet, you’ve probably heard of a filter bubble (过滤气泡). Internet sites and social media platforms use algorithms (算法) that show you content based on your previous interactions, likes, and shares. Over time, this creates a filter bubble where you only see content that agrees with your interests and beliefs, which serves to convince you that your beliefs are true. But what you might not know is that in similar fashion, your brain has several mechanisms to filter information, creating personal filter bubbles that deeply shape how you live your life.
Self-created filter bubbles happen through various cognitive processes, and they have multiple consequences. They shape your experience of what’s happening by forming a lens (镜片) through which you see and interpret the world. On the internet, because things are being presented based on past user history, no two people get the same results when they search for something on the internet or open their news feed. In real life, no two people are experiencing an event or seeing a situation in the exact same way, because we all bring our own past experiences and biases (偏见) to situations, causing us to process them differently.
Filter bubbles can cause you to stay stuck in self-created and often self-limiting patterns of thought and behavior. If you’ve ever wondered why change is so hard, it’s because your mental filter bubbles make it difficult to see different possibilities. If you hold the belief that you’ re not someone who can have a high-paying job, you won’t look for one and you’ll only seek out and see jobs that match up with what you think you’re worth.
Filter bubbles can also prevent critical thinking and can lead to a limited and biased view of the world, where people don’t consider alternative viewpoints and don’t engage with others outside of their own circles. When we only consume information that confirms our preexisting beliefs and values, we don’t question the truth of that information or properly evaluate the evidence.
While you can’t prevent your brain from creating selective filter bubbles, you can become more aware so that you don’t have to be limited or trapped by them.
32. What can we learn about filter bubbles?
A. They shape our interpretations of the world.
B. They have changed the way we view ourselves.
C. They are frequent occurrences and have little effect on us.
D. They assist us in making friends with like-minded individuals.
33. How do filter bubbles impact individuals’ ability to embrace change?
A. They facilitate open-mindedness and flexibility.
B. They make individuals resistant to new opportunities.
C. They help individuals adapt quickly to new situations.
D. They prevent individuals from successfully securing a job.
34. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Examples of creating filter bubbles. B. Barriers to overcoming filter bubbles.
C. Ways of escaping from filter bubbles. D. Benefits of recognizing filter bubbles.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The dangers of bias in information consumption.
B. The influence of past experiences on our worldview.
C. The benefits of social media algorithms on our mind.
D. The impact of filter bubbles on shaping our perception.
二、七选五
How to think outside the box
Thinking creatively often involves more than just considering opposing viewpoints. 36
A break in our daily routine can offer the necessary push to change our thought patterns. 37 We can change our surroundings, for instance, by rearranging our workspace or trying a different path to commute. For some, though, more significant changes such as starting a new job or getting married might be necessary.
A well-known approach is to tackle everyday situations as if experiencing them for the first time. In essence, we should examine them as if they were entirely novel to us. 38 For example, when brushing our teeth, pause to observe the toothbrush as if it were an unfamiliar object, noting its color and shape. Consider the taste of the toothpaste and pay attention to the sensation in our mouth as we brush.
39 The simple fact of having a group of individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds in our daily life fosters an environment where people are more adaptable to change. Why? Because they are essential catalysts for the creation of new ideas and solutions.
Unlike negative emotions that start specific responses (such as fear driving us to escape), positive emotions expand our focus, encourage exploration of our surroundings, and make us more receptive to new information.
40 They can be aspects of our life that are currently going well or thing we are thankful for. This transition to a more positive mindset will naturally lift our spirits—and liberate our thinking.
A. It’s also helpful to seek for the difference.
B. For some people, small changes might work.
C. We should show respect for different cultures too.
D. Some small techniques could help broaden the way we think.
E. Take a few moments to think about the beautiful things in our life.
F. Positive emotions play an important part in unfreezing our thinking.
G. “Beginners’ mind” develops openness to experiences, despite early knowledge.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered(饱经风霜的) hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

I am (strongly) in favor of AI-driven mental health support in schools. It offers unique advantages that complement traditional counseling.
To begin with, for many students who feel shy to ask for help, AI provides a private and accessible way to express emotions. What’s more, there is no denying that AI provides 24/7 access, thus reaching out to those students in need anytime. Therefore, the possibility of danger occurring can be effectively reduced. More importantly, it relieves counselors’ burden, enabling them to focus on severe cases.
With proper guidance, AI can be a valuable tool for students’ mental well-being. Looking ahead, I am convinced that students will have a rosy future in their mental world.
读后续写:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. With palms sweating and throat tightening, she pushed the door open gently. “Mom,” she said weakly, only to find there was nobody home. Exhausted and sad, she sank down onto the sofa, reflecting on what her mother did for her, like cooking for her, washing her clothes and so on. Heart beating painfully and banging against her ribs, she was struck dead with regret, having taken Mother’s love for granted and forgotten to convey timely gratitude. Realizing that all the scolding was out of the deep love from her mother, so ashamed did she feel that she couldn’t stop crying, regretful tears rolling down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Raising her head up, Jenny caught sight of a familiar face. It was her beloved mother that looked directly into her eyes with an affectionate smile. Urged by the force to right the wrong, she spoke up determinedly, “Mom, I’m deeply sorry for my rudeness. It won’t happen again! I promise! Would you forgive me? ” She could feel tears welling up in her eyes. “You are always my little girl! ” Mom eyed Jenny tenderly. As the setting sun cast a golden glow on both of their faces, they embraced each other tightly. It was not until that moment that Jenny realized that whatever happened, her mother would always be there for her!
