As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a programme of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30- or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training programme, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
( )32.What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
A.The right way of exercising.
B.The causes of a heart attack.
C.The difficulty of keeping fit.
D.The aging process of the heart.
( )33.In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A.Diet plan.
B.Professional background.
C.Exercise type.
D.Previous physical condition.
( )34.What does Levine’s research find?
A.Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B.High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C.It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D.The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
( )35.What does Dr Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A.Making use of the findings.
B.Interviewing the study participants.
C.Conducting further research.
D.Clarifying the purpose of the study.

The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. New research found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 per cent less likely to develop dementia(失智症)in later life—and if they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women.
Lead researcher Dr Helena Hörder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said: “These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people’s cardiovascular(心血管的)fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia.”
For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were tired out to measure their peak(最大值的)cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts.
A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level with a capacity of 120 watts or higher, while 92 women were in the medium fitness category. A total of 59 were of low fitness level, with a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their tests stopped because of health problems.
These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During that time,44 of the women developed dementia. Five per cent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 per cent of the women with medium fitness and 32 per cent of the women with low fitness.
“However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows an association,” said Hörder. “More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important.” She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were from Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups.
( )27. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.Positive effects of doing exercise.
B.Exercises suitable for the middle-aged.
C.Experimental studies on dementia.
D.Advantages of sporty women over men.
( )28. Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise?
A.To predict their maximum heart rate.
B.To assess their cardiovascular capacity.
C.To change their habit of working out.
D.To detect their potential health problems.
( )29. What do we know about Dr Hörder’s study?
A.It aimed to find a cure for dementia.
B.Data collection was a lengthy process.
C.Some participants withdrew from it.
D.The results were far from satisfactory.
( )30. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.More women are exercising to prevent dementia
B.Middle-aged women need to do more exercise
C.Fit women are less likely to develop dementia
D.Biking improves women’s cardiovascular fitness

The biggest stadiums in the world
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 8 AD, the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world’s best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome’s Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city’s Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations—not to mention the modern sports fan’s desire for a good view and a comfortable seat—tend to keep stadium capacities(容量)slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still functional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang, D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1,1989.
Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, US. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October 1, 1927.
Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, US. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.
Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, US. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7, 1922.
Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, US. Capacity: 102,512. Opened: September 24,1927.
( )21.How many people could the Circus Maximus hold?
A.104,944. B.107,601.
C.About 150,000. D.About 250,000.
( )22.Of the following stadiums, which is the oldest?
A.Michigan Stadium.
B.Beaver Stadium.
C.Ohio Stadium.
D.Kyle Field.
( )23.What do the listed stadiums have in common?
A.They host big games.
B.They have become tourist attractions.
C.They were built by Americans.
D.They are favoured by architects.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometre race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories(卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
( )28.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A.They must run long distances.
B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
( )29.What advantage does race walking have over running?
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics.
B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s more effective in body building.
D.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
( )30.What is Dr Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A.Getting experts’ opinions.
B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach.
D.Doing regular exercises.
( )31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking?
A.Sceptical. B.Objective.
C.Tolerant. D.Conservative.
根据第二段“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact(接触) with the ground at all times.”
根据最后一段“…some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers.”
根据最后一段中“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.”

For those who can stomach it, working out before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first, according to a study of meal timing and physical activity.
Athletes and scientists have long known that meal timing affects performance. However, far less has been known about how meal timing and exercise might affect general health.
To find out, British scientists conducted a study. They first found 10 overweight and inactive but otherwise healthy young men, whose lifestyles are, for better and worse, representative of those of most of us. They tested the men’s fitness and resting metabolic (新陈代谢的) rates and took samples (样品) of their blood and fat tissue.
Then, on two separate morning visits to the scientists’ lab, each man walked for an hour at an average speed that, in theory, should allow his body to rely mainly on fat for fuel. Before one of these workouts, the men skipped breakfast, meaning that they exercised on a completely empty stomach after a long overnight fast (禁食). On the other occasion, they ate a rich morning meal about two hours before they started walking.
Just before and an hour after each workout, the scientists took additional samples of the men’s blood and fat tissue.
Then they compared the samples. There were considerable differences. Most obviously, the men displayed lower blood sugar levels at the start of their workouts when they had skipped breakfast than when they had eaten. As a result, they burned more fat during walks on an empty stomach than when they had eaten first. On the other hand, they burned slightly more calories (卡路里), on average, during the workout after breakfast than after fasting.
But it was the effects deep within the fat cells that may have been the most significant, the researchers found. Multiple genes behaved differently, depending on whether someone had eaten or not before walking. Many of these genes produce proteins (蛋白质) that can improve blood sugar regulation and insulin (胰岛素) levels throughout the body and so are associated with improved metabolic health. These genes were much more active when the men had fasted before exercise than when they had breakfasted.
The implication of these results is that to gain the greatest health benefits from exercise, it may be wise to skip eating first.
( )61.The underlined expression “stomach it” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “ ”.
A. digest the meal easily
B. manage without breakfast
C. decide wisely what to eat
D. eat whatever is offered
( )62.Why were the 10 people chosen for the experiment?
A. Their lifestyles were typical of ordinary people.
B. Their lack of exercise led to overweight.
C. They could walk at an average speed.
D. They had slow metabolic rates.
( )63.What happened to those who ate breakfast before exercise?
A. They successfully lost weight.
B. They consumed a bit more calories.
C. They burned more fat on average.
D. They displayed higher insulin levels.
( )64.What could be learned from the research?
A. A workout after breakfast improves gene performances.
B. Too much workout often slows metabolic rates.
C. Lifestyle is not as important as morning exercise.
D. Physical exercise before breakfast is better for health.
根据第一段“…working out before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first…”
根据第三段“They first found 10 overweight and inactive but otherwise healthy young men, whose lifestyles are, for better and worse, representative of those of most of us.”
根据第六段“…they burned slightly more calories (卡路里), on average, during the workout after breakfast than after fasting.”
根据第一段“…working out before breakfast may be more beneficial for health than eating first…”和最后一段“…to gain the greatest health benefits from exercise, it may be wise to skip eating first.”

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while another read: “36. ” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner?
First of all, decide what you want from that person. 37. Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility? Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. 38. If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favourite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. 39.
You and your partner will probably have different skills. 40. Over time, both of you will benefit—your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.
A.Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
B.A workout partner usually needs to live close by.
C.You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.
D.Do you want to be a better athlete in your favourite sport?
E.How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice?
F.Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.
G.Any notice for a training partner should include such information.
36.C 结合上文“One reason was: ‘You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,’ while another read…”
37.D 根据空格前“First of all, decide what you want from that person.” 根据下文“Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?”
38.B 根据下文“If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.” 此处的that person恰好与选项B中的a workout partner对应,故本题答案为B。
39.G 结合本段的第一句话“My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park.” 选项G中的“Any notice for a training partner…”
40.F 空格前的“You and your partner will probably have different skills.” 由空格后的“Over time, both of you will benefit…”

Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didnt exist.
In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfathers, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “Its just the beginning,” she thought. “Ill come in last for sure.”
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile”. Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.
Paragraph 1:
When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised.
Paragraph 2:
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building.

When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. Looking around, she realized what her coach meant. Instead of being left in the dust, she found herself among the top three. “I just cant believe it,” Eva gasped, unable to contain her excitement. Her mouth curved up into a smile and her face lit up with a sense of confidence. The mind trick had worked wonders and the word “mile” was no longer a monster for her. She felt energetic, refreshed and powerful and believed she could overcome any obstacle in her life, including her poor sense of direction.
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. She stopped racking her brains for which direction to go. Instead, she created a detailed map of the six-story building, highlighting key landmarks with different colours. Breaking down the routes into smaller sections, she explored each day, one at a time. Days turned into weeks, and now navigating the huge building seemed like a piece of cake. This episode served as a reminder that with great determination and a clever mind trick, one can achieve anything and reach far.
When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. She couldnt believe that she had not only completed the mile run but had also surpassed her own expectations. The feeling of accomplishment washed over her, filling her with newfound confidence. Maybe running wasnt as intimidating as she had once thought. It was a valuable lesson for Eva that sometimes, pushing through our fears and using mental tricks can help us achieve more than we ever imagined. From that moment on, Evas perspective shifted, and she began to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles to overcome.
Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by its size and complexity, she would break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. Just like focusing on reaching the shadow cast on the track or the spot where the track curved, Eva would identify specific landmarks in the building to guide her way. She started by memorizing the location of her classrooms and slowly expanded her knowledge to include nearby hallways and common areas. With each successful navigation, Evas confidence grew, and she became more comfortable exploring the different floors and wings of the school. By reframing her approach and using her mind as a tool, Eva transformed her experience in the school building from confusion to empowerment.
