Construction workers recently found the ruins of a large pyramid beside a highway in Mexico. After discovering the site, researchers collected many ancient objects that will be studied in their laboratories over the coming months. The structure was found in June 2024 during highway expansion work in Hidalgo, central Mexico. The discovery happened by chance as workers were adding a third lane to the federal highway, showing how ancient structures can still be found during modern construction projects.
Scientists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History went to study the site. They used drones to take pictures and collected 155 items, including pieces of pottery, stone tools, and shells. To protect the old building, they built a large wall around the pyramid, which is 43 metres long and 11.7 metres high.
The pyramid is part of an old settlement called San Miguel, built between 650-1519. The area was ruled by the “Metzca lordship”, which influenced the region until the 1500s. People have lived in this region for a very long time, with the oldest settlements dating back at least 14,000 years. This shows that many different groups of people have lived here over thousands of years.
Scientists keep finding hidden ancient buildings in Mexico and other parts of the Americas. Many discoveries are made using LiDAR, a technology that uses laser light to see things concealed under plants and trees. This tool helps archaeologists (考古学家) find old structures that they couldn’t see just by looking at the ground.
Last year, researchers used LiDAR to find an 18-kilometre road that connected ancient Maya cities over 1,200 years ago. In Guatemala, they also discovered a previously unknown Maya civilization with 964 settlements connected by 177 kilometres of ancient roads. These findings show that the Americas had complex and thriving societies long before European settlers arrived. The discoveries remind us how advanced these ancient civilizations were, though their development was later interrupted by colonization. Each new discovery helps build a more complete picture of these remarkable ancient societies.

Natural landscapes, historical monuments, cultural practices, traditions, rituals and ancient ruins are part of the world’s heritage, and they need preservation and protection. Preservation of heritage is often wide-ranging. But the technology has helped speed up preservation, especially the digitization of collections. And the new generation technologies have literally revolutionised it.
A report—Artificial intelligence in the context of cultural heritage and museums: complex challenges and new opportunities, which emphasises the importance of AI in cultural heritage reconstruction, says that it has been made obvious in the case of the destruction by fire of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral (巴黎圣母院). This is also a typical example of how a digital product can contribute to the reconstruction effort. Rebuilding the cathedral relied on advanced technologies to ensure the historical accuracy and quality of the project.
Besides assisting in the revival of damaged images of historical documents, Deep Learning models can also restore the visual appearance of cultural heritage. AI-driven data analysis, combined with Virtual Reality (VR, 虚拟现实) technology, allows accurate reconstruction of cities and monuments. The Chinese Yingxian Wooden Pagoda (应县木塔), the world’s tallest wooden pagoda, has embraced its AI-powered “digital twin”, enabling visitors to immerse themselves inside the tower—including places which the public were previously unable to access—through VR glasses. The application of the technology assists researchers in their studies on cultural heritage items, injecting new motivation into the country’s booming cultural tourism.
Technology not only preserves cultural heritage but also empowers its inheritors to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. In China, through the innovative use of VR experiences and interactive digital archives, younger generations are gaining unprecedented access to traditional crafts like shadow puppetry (皮影戏). A new wave of enthusiasts are attracted by such digital innovations, ensuring the continued legacy of these cherished traditions.
New AI tools have provided avenues to produce tools for documenting, managing and visiting cultural heritage. Among the various challenges are limited awareness, lack of funds and unskilled human resources. Access to a large set of data can be challenging due to restrictions.
( )5.What does the author imply in the first paragraph?
A.Lots of the world’s heritage is in danger.
B.It’s hard to protect the world’s heritage.
C.Digitization benefits heritage protection.
D.Modern innovations have replaced traditional methods.
( )6.Why is Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral mentioned in the second paragraph?
A.To emphasise the importance of the report.
B.To emphasise the importance of the cathedral.
C.To emphasise the importance of digital technology.
D.To emphasise the importance of the reconstruction effort.
( )7.How does AI affect Yingxian Wooden Pagoda?
A.By getting it rebuilt again.
B.By getting it seen thoroughly.
C.By getting more data about it collected.
D.By making it a popular tourist attraction.
( )8.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.There are some difficulties in applying AI tools.
B.New AI tools mainly benefit cultural heritage.
C.Some people want to limit the development of AI.
D.New AI tools will be more popular in the near future.
