Have you ever seen ducklings(小鸭子)swimming in a line behind their mother? Do you know why? Scientists once guessed it helped ducklings save energy, but they didn't know how it worked. A new study finally found the answer.
As people move in the water, they create waves that push against other swimmers, making it harder for them to swim. We call this wave drag(波浪阻力).The study team found that ducklings had less wave drag when they swam behind their mother. They calculated(计算) a number called C to describe how this wave drag changed.
·If C is between 0 and 99, there is less wave drag.
·If C is less than 0, there is more wave drag.
·If C-is 100 or greater, the wave drag changes into a force that pushes the duck forward.

The results show that ducklings swim behind the mother because it is the best choice. Why is it easier for them to swim when C is 100 or greater? When the mother swims, she creates waves behind her. So do the ducklings. When the waves meet, they create a new wave. In places where C is high, this new wave will carry the ducklings to its lowest part. That means they move without having to work against the drag.
The mother's waves become weaker when the ducklings move far away from her, so only the first two ducklings get a stronger forward push. What's more, the front ducklings pass wave energy to the ones behind them, making it easier for all to swim.S
This discovery is useful for us too. If boats sail (航行)in a line, they can use less energy, which helps save money and protect the environment.
( )23. At first, what did scientists believe was the purpose of ducklings' swimming habit?
A.To stay warm. B.To save energy. C.To avoid getting lost. D.To protect themselves.
( )24. If a duckling's C is 116,what will happen to it?
A:It will swim easily. B. It will lose its direction.
C.It will feel more wave drag. D.It will get no forward push in the water.
( )25.Why does the writer use a picture and a table in the text?
A. To help readers better understand the results of the study.
B. To show how much work the study team did for the study.
C.To compare the difference between the mother and ducklings.
D.To make readers understand how much energy ducklings save.
