It was 22:21 p.m. on a cold winter night and I reached the stop after riding for 10 minutes, just in time to catch the last bus. As I showed my QR code, the driver nodded to me and said, “You again? You always get home this late.”
I was surprised that he remembered me, but perhaps it wasn’t so surprising. I often took the last bus. Some nights, I was the only passenger the whole way.
“Yeah, I’ve been really busy with my work recently,” I said.
“What do you do?”
“An editor (编辑),” I replied.
“Oh, my friend is an editor, too. It’s a tiring job, isn’t it?”
“It sure is. There’s a lot to take care of before it’s printed. Driving seems less tiring. You can enjoy the landscape along the way, can’t you?”
“Landscape?” the driver laughed. “Imagine driving the same way 16 times a day. For everyone’s safety, you must pay attention to the road. And on night work, I never get home until 1 am.”
“Oh! It’s freezing this late in the season!” I said. “It is,” the driver agreed. “But I love my job. When I was a kid, I dreamed of driving a bus. It makes me feel proud to get everyone to their destination safely!”
“I know the feeling,” I said. “Our articles are learned by thousands of children. I’m proud of my work, too.”
Just then, the screen on the bus said, “It’s 22:30. Time to leave!”
“Good for you,” the driver said. The bus began to move, carrying two tired but proud men through the night.

Can you imagine that a fish talks to you? As we know, fish often swim silently in the water. However, recent research by Aaron Rice, a scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, has shown that fish can talk! Rice and his team found that many fish use sounds to communicate (交流), just like we use our voices to talk with each other.
Rice’s research has shown that fish have their language and can communicate with each other in many different ways. This communication is important to fish because it helps them share important information. Fish use different sounds for different reasons. For example, some fish use sounds to warn of danger—if a fish senses danger, it can warn other fish by making a special sound. And they can use a different sound to find other fish of their kind.
Rice’s team found that one kind of fish can make a loud sound by contracting muscles (收缩肌肉) around their swim bladders (鱼鳔). Another kind of fish that Rice studied can use their swim bladders to make a sound that is comparable to a human voice. Some scientists think that they can make that sound by rubbing (摩擦) their swim bladders together.
Now, thanks to Rice’s research, we understand more about fish and their amazing abilities. And here also comes the question: Is there something else—something more secret about fish communication that we don’t know about?
根据语篇内容, 选择最佳选项。
26. What did Aaron Rice find in his research?
A. Fish can talk with humans.
B. Fish swim silently in the water.
C. Fish can use sounds to communicate with each other.
27. Why is communication important to fish?
A. Because they can share different information.
B. Because they want to show their language.
C. Because they can make more friends.
28. Which part do some fish use to produce sounds according to the passage?
A. Heads. B. Swim bladders. C. Tails.
29. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How some fish make sounds.
B. Why the fish make sounds.
C. The importance of swim bladders.
30. What will the writer probably talk about next?
A. Why we need to learn about fish.
B. Aaron Rice’s research on other animals.
C. Fish can use body language to communicate.
【答案】26. C 27. A 28. B 29. A 30. C

【28题详解】

第三段主要描述了鱼类通过收缩鱼鳔周围肌肉或摩擦鱼鳔来发出声音的具体机制,即鱼类如何发出声音。
【30题详解】
最后一段提出“Is there something else... secret about fish communication...”,暗示除了声音交流外可能还有其他秘密的交流方式。选项C提到“肢体语言”,符合对“其他交流方式”的推测。

Helping brings light to our lives
As we all know, helping each other is important in our daily life. Last Sunday, I took a bus to the city center. On the bus, I noticed an old man standing near me. He looked very tired. So I stood up and gave my seat to him politely. He thanked me with a big smile. At that moment, I felt a strong sense of warmth in my heart.

Gan Wenyong, the founder (创办者) of the “Banshan Huayu” library, has a special connection with books.
Born in a poor mountain village in Yunnan, he didn’t have the chance to go to school when he was young. However, everything changed in 2005 when a tourist gave him a book called The Little Prince as a gift.
At that time, Gan couldn’t read, so his brother read it to him. The adventures of the little prince touched his heart deeply. After years of hard work, he entered a university in Kunming to study law in 2016. That summer, he brought 400 books back home. Seeing village children come to borrow books every day, he decided to build a library for them.
In 2016, he turned two rooms of his house into the village’s first library. With the help of the government and kind people, it has over 40,000 books now. In 2020, Gan returned home and managed (管理) the library full-time.
