Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behaviour? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees (黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (掠食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig up the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don’t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, also called chimps, can be sneaky (狡诈的) as well. After a fight, the losing chimp will put out its hand to the other chimp. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
▲ When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
49. The writer started the passage with three questions to ________.
A. ask the readers to answer them B. catch the readers’ attention to the topic

A. All the birds are good at fooling other animals to raise their babies.
B. Clever scrub jays bury the food deep to prevent it from being stolen.
C. A cuckoo lays eggs in their own nests and then flies away quickly.
D. A plover protects its young from a predator by pretending to be hurt.
51. Which of the following sentences is suitable for “ ▲ “?
A. Not all the chimps have this ability. B. Sometimes chimps even fool humans.
C. Chimps are also sneaky in other ways. D. Some chimps can learn from humans.
52. Which might be the best title for the passage?
A. Do Animals Lie to Others? B. Does Mother Nature Fool Animals?
C. How Do Animals Learn to Lie? D. How Does Honesty Help Animals?

Recently, a heartwarming and creative activity known as the Chinese Textbook Relay (接力) has swept across famous places worldwide, connecting with young people and drawing wide media attention.
The lovely idea first began in London. A Chinese overseas student took her middle school English textbook with Big Ben on its cover and hid it near the landmark. She invited fellow Chinese visitors to take photos with local views, write down sincere feelings on the pages and pass the book along. This small heartfelt idea soon got wide popularity. Before long, similar relays spread to the Pyramids, the Sydney Opera House, the Roman Colosseum and other world-famous sites. Participants (参与者) hide textbooks that match the views in quiet corners, and finders keep this warm relay moving on.
This simple activity touches young people deeply and brings out strong youthful feelings. For Chinese teenagers, textbooks have long been their first window to explore the world. Standing exactly in the scenes they once only saw in books, they turn teenage dreams into reality and complete a valuable growing-up journey.
It also shows today’s Chinese youth view the world with calmness and equality (平等), along with quiet but deep cultural confidence. For overseas Chinese students and travelers, these textbooks act as special warm connections. They ease homesickness and help strangers in foreign lands get to know each other. Besides, it perfectly shows the true meaning of learning: combining book knowledge with real-life experience.
Filled with unique Chinese-style romance (浪漫), the textbook relay shares the sincerity and gentle warmth of Chinese young people with the world.

When Jan walks into the kitchen, her mum is sitting at the table, reading a book and drinking a cup of tea. Jan goes to the fridge and looks inside for a drink. It’s a choice between a cola and an apple juice. The apple juice wins.
“Don’t eat anything,” her mum says. “Dinner’s in 20 minutes.”
Jan doesn’t answer. She takes a glass from the cupboard above the sink, sits down opposite Mum, and pours the apple juice into the glass.
“Mum?”
“Uh-huh?”
Mum doesn’t look up from her book. It’s always the same. When she starts reading a book, she can’t stop until she reaches the end. It makes Dad mad.
“Can you give me something for my time capsule?”
Mum looks up from her book. Suddenly she’s interested.
“Your what?”
“My time capsule. It’s for a school project.”
“What’s a time capsule?”
Jan can’t believe her mum doesn’t know what a time capsule is. Everyone knows what a time capsule is.
“A time capsule...you know.”
“No, I don’t know.”
“You put things inside it and then you bury it in the garden for someone to find in the future. That’s why it’s called a time capsule.”
Mum puts down her book. She drinks some more tea and looks across at Jan.
“What do you put inside?”
“Things. Personal things...a letter...things related to now...this year...a diary or a newspaper, for example.” Jan looks at the apple juice. “Or a bottle of apple juice. When the person finds the time capsule in the future they can discover things about the past. They can read the newspaper. They can find out what people ate and drank, and they can find out about...me.”
“How do you know someone is going to find it?”
“I don’t.”
“I see. And this is a school project?”
“Yes. It’s for History. For Mrs. Zinger.”
“And you want me to give you something to put inside the time capsule?” Jan makes a face.
It’s a face Mum recognizes. It’s the face Jan makes to say Mum doesn’t understand. Mum never understands.
“No, Mum. You don’t understand. I want something to put the things into. I need a container. Have you got anything? Please?”
“What kind of thing?”
“I don’t know. A box? I need something strong to protect the things inside.”
Mum looks around the room and thinks. Suddenly she has an idea. She goes to one of the cupboards and takes out a large old biscuit tin. “Here it is,” she says, opening the tin and looking inside.

Jin Hongjun is a tree healer who has devoted (奉献) his life to saving ancient trees in China. Twenty years ago, he helped rescue a 4,500-year-old cypress tree, known as the “General Cypress (将军柏)”, in Dengfeng, Henan Province. This tree is very special because it was given a title by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago.
The General Cypress was in bad shape because of years of poor care. Under the guidance of a tree expert, Jin and his team worked hard to save it. They removed rotten parts, cleaned it, made it stronger and improved the soil around it. It was a big job because they had to dig out lots of old stone slabs and replace the soil.
Taking care of ancient trees is a continuous job. Jin went on to protect many other old trees. He led the protection work of 878 ancient trees in “The Centre of Heaven and Earth” of Dengfeng. The centre was on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. He even worked through a fever and spent nights in a tent to get the job done.
Jin faced many challenges, like digging through hard clay by hand and stopping tourists from burning incense near the trees. He explains that these ancient cypresses grow very slowly, and some might be even older than people think.
Jin is now a national expert on tree protection and has helped over 20,000 ancient trees across China. He teaches people how to take care of trees in different environments, emphasizing (强调) the importance of water, air and soil. He also teaches people how to respect and protect these natural treasures. “Caring for these ancient trees is not only about keeping them alive, but also about respecting the history and culture they represent,” said Jin.

C. show that he is uncertain about the answers D. list questions that are still not solved by scientists
50. Which of the following about birds is true according to the passage?
