Each of the world’s roughly 7,000 languages represents a unique way of seeing and understanding life, a natural experiment in human thought. Judgments of a language’s worth come not from its structure, but from the power and status of its speakers. Yet this profound diversity is collapsing. Currently, about half of all languages have 10,000 or fewer speakers. The median number of speakers per language on every continent is below 1,000. These figures signal acute endangerment. Languages are not a dying natural death; they are being forced out of existence. A few dozen killer languages, like English and Spanish, expand through political, economic, and cultural conquest, while centuries of imperialism, capitalism, and nation-building squeeze out the rest. In settler societies like the US and Canada, half of the indigenous (原住民的) languages are already silent; in homes globally, families abandon mother tongues for dominant languages, losing not just words but gestures and cultural knowledge. Why does this loss matter? Each language holds unique insights into human communication — like the expressive clicks of Khoisan languages or the object-subject-verb order of Warao. More crucially, languages carry poetry, oral histories, environmental wisdom, and lifestyles. Research confirms that mother-tongue education and language maintenance are vital for mental and physical well-being, especially for marginalized (被边缘化的) communities. The organized effort to preserve languages is recent. Inspired by biodiversity and indigenous rights movements, linguists and activists now race to document languages, creating dictionaries and recording oral histories. However, linguists cannot “save” languages alone;that power lies with the communities themselves. Revitalization is a challenging act of hope, often feeling like a “wonderful madness” — an attempt to revive a worldview nearly lost. The fight for linguistic diversity is ultimately a fight alongside its speakers, requiring real support from the majority world that seldom notices this silent crisis. 24.What is the function of the first paragraph? A.To list global language statistics. B.To present a current language crisis. C.To argue against language superiority. D.To compare various language structures. 25.What does the term “killer languages” refer to in the text? A.Those no longer spoken by any community. B.Those passing on through words and gestures. C.Those thriving at the expense of other languages. D.Those simplifying complex sound and grammar rules. 26.Why does language loss matter according to paragraph 3? A.It degrades poetry and oral histories. B.It threatens global environmental safety. C.It damages well-being of all communities. D.It hurts the sustainability of some knowledge. 27.What is the main idea of the passage? A.Linguists are documenting dying languages. B.Language loss results from social and historical forces. C.Native languages are being replaced by dominant ones. D.The collapse of language diversity is causing cultural loss. C Last summer, I had the opportunity to participate in a volunteer project organized by a local charity. Before we set off, we made full preparations for days. We collected all kinds of books from the community, bought pens, notebooks and other school supplies, and talked about how to get along well with the children in the village. The goal was to help underprivileged children in a remote village by providing them with educational resources and emotional support. When we arrived at the village, I was struck by the simplicity of the children’s lives. They had few toys and limited access to books, yet their eyes shone with curiosity and enthusiasm. Our team set up a small library in the village community center and began organizing daily reading sessions for the kids. I was paired with a shy girl named Mei, who was initially hesitant to speak. Over the course of a week, we read stories together, and I encouraged her to share her thoughts and dreams. Gradually, Mei became more confident and even started asking questions about the world beyond her village. This experience taught me the great impact that a little time and effort can have. It wasn’t just about providing books; it was about building connections and inspiring others. I realized that public welfare is not just about giving; it’s also about receiving — receiving the joy of helping others and the achievements of making a difference. This meaningful trip has inspired me to continue seeking ways to contribute to my community and to spread kindness wherever I go in the future. 28.What does the underlined word “underprivileged” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Lacking opportunities and resources. B.Living in a remote and isolated area. C.Being too shy to express themselves. D.Having no interest in study. 29.What impressed the author most when arriving at the village? A.The children’s excellent academic performance and talent. B.The beautiful natural scenery and friendly villagers. C.The lack of modern technology and poor facilities. D.The poor living conditions and the children’s strong curiosity. 30.Why did the author mention Mei’s story in Paragraph 2? A.To show the importance of one-on-one tutoring. B.To illustrate the positive effect of emotional support. C.To prove that reading is the best way to build confidence. D.To explain how to communicate with shy children effectively. 31.What does the author want to convey through this story? A.Many hands make light work. B.Knowledge is power. C.Giving is receiving. D.Better to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish. D Over the past year, the Chicago Department of Transportation has completed 10 safety projects focused on protecting pedestrians (行人) and cyclists, particularly young people. These measures were introduced in response to accidents involving youth. Teens involved with West Town Bike — a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students — have voiced concerns about cycling safety while also proposing concrete ideas for improvement. Many of these students expressed mixed feelings about biking in the city: while they value the sense of freedom, they often do not feel safe. Their suggestions range from infrastructural (基础设施的) upgrades to educational initiatives. For example, David Harb from Lane Tech High School stressed the importance of safety training, such as hand signals, and recommended expanding National Walk and Bike to School Day to include high schools. He also proposed replacing stop signs with roundabouts to naturally slow traffic. Other students highlighted issues with enforcement and infrastructure. Kaniyah Hale believes drivers who cause collisions with cyclists or pedestrians should receive stronger punishment. Armand Dunkines, who was hit while riding where a bike lane suddenly ends, urged the city to use data to guide bike lane placement and increase traffic law enforcement, especially on weekends. Tamara Scott, both a cyclist and a new driver, pointed out that bike lanes are frequently blocked by cars, emphasizing that motorists must be reminded they are sharing the road. Christopher Garcia, an experienced cyclist, imagines a redesigned road system with separate spaces for bicycles and cars, along with shared zones. Together, these teens agree that making Chicago’s streets safer will require not only physical changes but also a shift in culture and attitudes among all road users. 32.What is West Town Bike according to the text? A. A project on protecting pedestrians. B. A school offering teens bike safety training. C. An official department managing traffic safety. D. An organization running free cycling programs. 33.What can be inferred about students’ views from paragraph 2? A. Biking safety must be ensured. B. Steps count in reducing infrastructure costs. C. Safety training outweighs facility upgrades. D. Stop signs effectively slow down traffic flow. 34.Why does the author mention Armand Dunkines’ accident? A. To call on motorists to follow the rules. B. To complain about the lack of bike lanes. C. To show the benefits of law enforcement. D. To criticize the poor design of infrastructure. 35.What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Teens’ Appeals for Safer Chicago Streets B. Chicago’s New Traffic Rules for Cyclists C. The History of Chicago Cycling Programs D. Chicago’s Shift toward Fewer Car Accidents What Do Our Dreams Tell Us? Dreams are an integral part of healthy sleep. The average person spends roughly two hours dreaming each night. Yet even with this significant time, the phenomenon remains mysterious. What role do dreams play? Dream researcher Alan Siegel calls dreams an entrance to our inner selves — they help process emotions and tackle tough problems we struggle with while awake. Meanwhile, expert Robert Stickgold argues that dreams spring from memory.      36      It lets us absorb lessons, heal from hurt, and grow wiser through experience. Put simply, their research shows that dreams are the brain’s innate way to work through our inner struggles and make sense of our memories. Certain dream themes feel universal across cultures.      37      Whether tumbling from a great height or tripping down stairs, these dreams often spark intense fear. A sense of helplessness lingers too. They tend to symbolize lost control or hidden insecurity. In contrast, flying dreams are deeply uplifting. Soaring through the air, weightless and free — it fills dreamers with joy.      38      Such dreams usually reflect a yearning for freedom or independence. Dreaming of exams is another widespread experience. These dreams often come from anxiety — about being unprepared, rushed, or judged in real life.      39      Even negative pre-exam dreams can boost actual test performance. After all, the brain processes stress ahead of time. Similarly, dreams of getting lost are frequent. Wandering unfamiliar streets, missing a train, or struggling to find a destination — these reflect uncertainty and confusion. They often mirror life’s transition periods: career changes, relationship shifts, or personal growth.      40      Dreams are deeply personal. You’re the best interpreter of your own dreams. Paying attention to their themes and the feelings they stir can unlock profound insights. These insights help you better understand your inner world and build greater self-awareness. A.Falling is one of the most common. B.Interestingly, there exists a silver lining. C.It also brings a strong sense of empowerment. D.Such mental activities simply sort unconnected ideas. E.Replaying past events, big and small, is nature’s clever design. F.In these times, it’s normal to feel adrift or unsure of our next steps. G.Transition periods usually disappear when confusion fades in dreams. When you step into “Yameng’s Home”, a Qingdao guesthouse, a three-legged cat greets you. This year, the gathering would be held in Alex’s home and he was so looking forward to it. Preparing a big dinner is never easy. Mom started the rush early. She was in the kitchen, as busy as a bee. “I hope Dad will be back soon,” Mom said to Alex. Dad was a mechanic, responsible for a district’s power lines. “He promised he’d get off work at four.” Alex replied and volunteered to be the “decoration helper”. At 6:00, the bell rang. It was Aunt Jenny and Uncle Mark, but no Dad. By 6:30, the house was well-decorated and Alex had hung a red lantern high above the doorway, a symbol of happiness and reunion. Mom managed to finish the cooking when the bell rang again. It was Grandma and Grandpa, together with Uncle Jack’s family. Still no Dad. Mom was worried, “The cold wind is getting stronger tonight.” While waiting for Dad, Alex turned on the music and kept busy chatting with all the guests about holidays and his school life. Mom texted and called Dad, but, no answer. At 7:15, stomachs made noise louder than the music. Alex found Mom in the bedroom and he heard Dad say “Sorry” over the phone. Mom handed the phone to Alex, disappointment written on her face. “What happened, Dad?” Dad shouted over the wind, “The main power line is broken! All the workers are here. We have to fix it, or many people will have a cold and dark night. I am so sorry, but you know... this is my duty.” Looking at Mom, Alex felt it was now his job to keep the evening alive. “Well, ” Alex replied, “Dad, take your time and take care of yourself. I will help Mom make sure everything goes well. “Mom, shall we start the dinner?” asked Alex. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ At 11:50, the door opened and in came Dad, looking tired. ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ 参考答案 一、听力 1.B 【原文】W: Hi, Mr. Smith. I’m really interested in the science project. I’ve read the instructions, but I’m not sure where to start it. M: Don’t worry. First, make a list of the topics you’re interested in. Then, do some basic research. 2.A 【原文】M: Our clients provided some feedback on the sample of the watch. They’d like to see more functions on the displayed panel. W: Let’s see if we can add these functions within our current production time. Then we can change our plan if needed. 3.B 【原文】W: I don’t know what I would have done last week without you covering my shift. I had that family emergency. M: Not at all. That’s what colleagues are for. W: Seriously, I owe you a debt. Let me treat you to lunch tomorrow. 4.B 【原文】M: We collected 18 kilos of paper last week, not bad. W: Better, but the goal was 25. Let’s place a collection box outside the lecture hall. M: Smart. I’ll make a poster that says one sheet helps. W: I’m trying to live a greener lifestyle. Any tips? M: Start by reducing the use of plastic products and recycling more. About energy, use LED bulbs and try to save water. W: Great ideas! I’ll include these in my daily life. M: The fog here is annoying but fascinating. The cold California Current chills the air above it. When warm, moist Pacific air moves over this cold water, it cools fast and condenses into fog. W: I didn’t know ocean currents matter so much! I read it can look pink or purple at sunrise or sunset, due to light scattering through water droplets. M: Right! It’s pure water droplets, no pollution like smog. The air feels fresh after it lifts. W: That’s surprising. I’ll appreciate it more now, even if it ruins my beach plans. 8.A 9.B 【原文】M: Hey, Gina. The poem you submitted was truly superb. With your approval, I’d like to submit it to our school’s writing competition. W: I would be so proud to share my work with others. I would never have started writing if it weren’t for your class. M: I know. Gina, I can see you used the style of the famous American poet Emily Dickinson. All artists get inspiration from others. W: Really? Who are you inspired by? M: My favorite poet is Shakespeare. I love reading poems about love, history, and nature. But for writing, I mainly enjoy sharing personal stories. 10.A 11.A 12.C 【原文】W: Is poetry more popular in China than in the West? M: I don’t know. But I think most people don’t read poetry in the West. W: Why not? Because of the pronunciation of Old English? M: I actually like the pronunciation. But in school we are taught to study it and find meanings, instead of just enjoying it. That puts me off. How about you? W: We do pretty much the same thing in school as well. But I find learning the meaning is important. M: Why? Won’t that make poetry boring? W: Not at all. Only after we learn the meaning, can we read between the lines. M: Ah, that makes sense. Have you ever tried to write poetry? W: No. But my grandpa loves writing poetry. He often read his poems to me when I was young. 13.C 14.A 15.A 16.B 【原文】W: Hello, Dr. Green, I’m here to talk to you about my work placement. M: Oh, yes. So, which work placement have you chosen? W: I decided to go for the Orion Stadium placement. The event I’ll be managing is one where I’m helping to set up a sports competition for primary school children. M: Yup. That’s always a popular placement, even though it can be tougher than you think, working with children. W: I know, but it’s the fresh air that fascinates me. Organizing something indoors doesn’t have the same appeal, even though it might be fun. M: OK. Just a heads-up — watch out for flying balls and equipment around the kids. W: Yes, I’ll ask whether they provide some protective wear. And I’ll also need to make sure none of the equipment’s damaged. M: Ah, well, you’ll be working with schools, so the equipment will be their responsibility. However, the grounds and what goes on there will be yours. W: Oh, I see. 17.B 18.A 19.A 20.B 【原文】W: I’d like to welcome Barry Green, the successful concert violinist, to our studio today. M: Hello. It’s good to be here. W: Barry, why did you decide to be a violinist? M: It was something I’d been desperate to do since I was about six years old. My parents weren’t musicians, but they let my brother and I do whatever we liked as hobbies, as long as it didn’t get in the way of our education. My brother’s a good footballer, but sport’s never really been my thing. I watched a concert on TV, and after that I was hooked. W: So what did you do when you left school? M: I thought about studying maths or physics, but then I heard about a youth band that was doing a world tour. They offered me a scholarship so I could afford to go, which was brilliant. When I got back, as I already knew what I wanted to do, it seemed pointless to delay going to music college, so that’s where I went. I’m very lucky to be able to do what I love, and to have achieved what I set out to do as a young child. Not many people get the chance to do that. 根据第二段“The spring wildflower bloom usually starts in January or February at lower elevations and peaks park-wide from April through June.”, 可知,公园野花的花期在4月至6月达到顶峰,因此5月属于花期顶峰时段,是观赏野花的最佳月份。 根据第三段“The view is especially charming at dusk when Palm Springs, Indio, and other valley cities sparkle with millions of lights.”, 可知,Keys View的特色是黄昏时分山谷城市灯火闪烁的迷人景象。 根据最后一段“All visitor centers are wheelchair accessible...Jumbo Rocks and Indian Cove campgrounds offer accessible campsites...trails at the Oasis of Mara and Keys View are the best for wheelchairs.”, 可知,公园为轮椅使用者提供了无障碍停车位、信息台、洗手间、露营地及步道等便利设施。A项“缺乏无障碍设施”与原文相反;C项“完全欢迎宠物”与第三段“Pets are not allowed on hiking trails”矛盾;D项“全年都很繁忙”与第二段“October through May is the busiest time”不符,并非全年。 根据第二段“A few dozen killer languages, like English and Spanish, expand through political, economic, and cultural conquest, while centuries of imperialism, capitalism, and nation-building squeeze out the rest.”,可知,“killer languages”指的是那些通过征服扩张而挤压、排挤其他语言的语言,即“以牺牲其他语言为代价而繁荣的语言”。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“Yet this profound diversity is collapsing. Currently, about half of all languages have 10,000 or fewer speakers. The median number of speakers per language on every continent is below 1,000. 根据第一段划线词所在句“The goal was to help underprivileged children in a remote village by providing them with educational resources...” 故选A。 根据第二段“When we arrived at the village, I was struck by the simplicity of the children’s lives. They had few toys and limited access to books, yet their eyes shone with curiosity and enthusiasm.” 第二段中 “Over the course of a week, we read stories together, and I encouraged her to share her thoughts and dreams. 根据最后一段作者感悟“I realized that public welfare is not just about giving; it’s also about receiving — receiving the joy of helping others and the achievements of making a difference.” 根据第一段“Teens involved with West Town Bike — a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students”可知,它是一个为学生提供骑行项目的非营利组织。 根据第二段“while they value the sense of freedom, they often do not feel safe. Their suggestions range from infrastructural upgrades to educational initiatives”可知,学生们认为骑行安全必须得到保障,并提出了多种改进建议。 根据第三段“Armand Dunkines, who was hit while riding where a bike lane suddenly ends, urged the city to use data to guide bike lane placement”可知,作者提及他的事故是为了批评自行车道突然中断这一糟糕的基础设施设计。 根据全文内容,尤其是第一段中“Teens involved with West Town Bike — a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students — have voiced concerns about cycling safety while also proposing concrete ideas for improvement.” 故选A. 36.E【解析】上文“expert Robert Stickgold argues that dreams spring from memory.”指出梦源于记忆,下文“It lets us absorb lessons, heal from hurt, and grow wiser through experience.” E项“Replaying past events, big and small, is nature’s clever design.” 37.A【解析】上文指出“Certain dream themes feel universal across cultures.”引出常见梦境主题,下文具体描述了“tumbling from a great height or tripping down stairs”的场景。A项“Falling is one of the most common.” 故选A项。 C项“It also brings a strong sense of empowerment.”中,“also”表示补充,“a strong sense of empowerment”与上文“joy”并列,共同构成飞翔梦的积极体验,衔接自然。故选C项。 39.B【解析】上文指出考试梦源于现实生活中的焦虑,下文“Even negative pre-exam dreams can boost actual test performance.” B项“Interestingly, there exists a silver lining.” 40.F【解析】上文指出迷路的梦“often mirror life’s transition periods: career changes, relationship shifts, or personal growth”,具体列举了过渡期的类型。F项“In these times, it’s normal to feel adrift or unsure of our next steps.” 41.A【解析】break down 消除;put up 张贴,搭建;take over 接管;keep out 阻挡。 故选 A。 44.A【解析】apply for 申请,报考;account for 解释,占据;stand for 代表;search for 寻找。 故选 A。 根据前文“The kitchen counters are lowered for guests with limited”可知,结合残障人士的群体特征,此处指行动受限的人群。 故选 A。 故选 A。 故填 a。 with the aim of doing sth. 但此处空格前是 with the aim,后面直接跟不定式也可接受,即 with the aim to do sth.。故填 to celebrate。 establish… as… 故填 as。 故填 has practiced。 故填 its。 故填 which。 Hi, it’s great to see your interest in this performance. I watched it with great excitement — it was amazing to see those robots move in perfect harmony, showing beautiful traditional Chinese dances and patterns. To me, the combination of technology and tradition in the performance is wonderful. Robots, as a symbol of modern technology, carry forward traditional culture, making old customs more attractive to young people and spreading Chinese culture in a new way. I think this performance is a great innovation. It not only shows China’s technological progress but also passes on our traditional values, letting the world see the beauty of Chinese culture in a fresh and vivid way. 参考范文   “ Mom, shall we start the dinner?” asked Alex. Mom nodded, her eyes still reflecting a trace of worry. Alex quickly guided everyone to the dining table with a warm smile. He raised his glass and said, “Let’s toast to a wonderful new year, even though Dad can’t be with us right now. He’s out there making sure others can have a bright and warm night. He’s our hero!” The room filled with applause and cheers. Everyone started to enjoy the delicious food, sharing stories and laughter, making the best of the moment.     At 11:50, the door opened and in came Dad, looking tired. His face was covered with dirt and sweat, but his eyes shone with a sense of accomplishment. Alex rushed to him and gave him a big hug. Dad smiled weakly and said, “I’m sorry I’m late. But we finally fixed the power line.” Mom walked over and wiped the dirt off Dad’s face. “You did a great job, honey.” she said softly. As the clock struck midnight, they all shouted “Happy New Year!” and hugged each other tightly, feeling the warmth of family and the joy of a new beginning. Hi, mister smith.
