Taking a nap (午睡) is a good way for students to relax after lunch. To make it more comfortable, many middle and high schools use foldable (可折叠的) desks and chairs. However, not all of these desks and chairs are well designed— some are the wrong size or shape, and their poor design may even cause discomfort or harm to students.
To solve this, a new national rule came out on Sept. 2, 2025. It explains clearly how to make and use foldable desks and chairs correctly. In primary schools, desks should be between 45.5 cm and 73 cm tall. In middle schools, they should be between 56.5 cm and 79 cm tall. Chairs should be at least 36 cm wide to help students sit well. For naps, the chairs can be turned into a bed. A bed should be at least 105 cm long, and the backrest (靠背) should lean (倾斜) back more than 135 degrees.
The desks and chairs must also be strong. For example, a chair can be folded up to 10,000 times. ________ If pencil mark gets on them, students should be able to clean it with an eraser.
The new rule will take effect on Feb. 1 next year. Before that, experts said that schools still need to think about a few things. For example, do the new desks fit in different classrooms? And are they good for classes with many students?
6. Why do many middle and high schools use foldable desks and chairs?
A. To make students’ naps more comfortable.
B. To save more space in classrooms.
C. To make classrooms look more beautiful.
D. To let students move them easily.
7. According to the passage, how wide should the chairs be at least?
A. 36 cm. B. 45.5 cm. C. 56.5 cm. D. 79 cm.
8. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. In fact, they are not strong enough for some students.
B. Therefore, they are very popular in schools now.
C. For example, they come in many different colors.
D. They should also be easy to clean.
9. When will the new national rule take effect?
A. On Feb. 2 next year. B. On Sept. 2 next year.
C. On Feb. 1 next year. D. On Sept. 1 next year.
10. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. A new rule on safe nap-friendly desks and chairs.
B. How to sleep longer during students’ naps.
C. Why students dislike old desks.
D. Problems of old foldable desks and chairs.
C
I started learning Spanish. At first, it felt a bit scary. There were so many new words and strange accents (口音). But as I learned more phrases, I felt more confident (自信的). It wasn’t just about speaking a new language. It was about proving to myself that I could do something that seemed impossible before.
The best part is meeting new people. Learning a language turns strangers into friends. You can join in conversations, understand jokes and really fit in. Language connects us in ways that books can’t.
Studies say that learning a second language can improve memory and problem-solving ability. I can really feel the difference. Switching (转换) between English and Spanish made me think differently about language. I’m more careful with words and pay more attention when I listen.
Of course, it’s not always easy. Sometimes, I forget a word I learned the day before, or I don’t understand what someone is saying. But I’ve learned that every mistake means I’m trying, and trying is learning. Learning a language is hard work, but it can also be fun. With apps like Duolingo, practicing can be fun and something to look forward to, not a chore.
Learning a language is also about having a positive attitude. It’s a lesson in being open to other cultures. Maybe one day you’ll be ordering tacos in Mexico City.

Every student needs a good place to study. My ideal learning space is small but very useful.
The most important part is a quiet reading corner. I will put a small desk and a comfortable chair there. On the desk, I will place a reading lamp because good light is important for my eyes. I will also have a clock on the wall. It can help organize my time and have a rest.
