Since the Zhou Dynasty, a complete etiquette (礼仪) system has been established. Today, many of the rules are not as strict as before. However, some are still followed in important situations and are thought of as good examples of good manners.
Walking Etiquette
In ancient China, while walking with someone with a higher position (位置) or an old person, one should lower his head, bend down, and walk a little bit behind them. If three people walk together, the elder or a teacher should be in the middle. One should bow down and walk fast using smaller steps when passing by an elder or a teacher.
Seating Etiquette
The seating order is still widely used in family and business dinners. Everyone should be sitting in a proper position at dining tables. It is based on their titles, ranks or ages. If someone doesn’t know the exact position, they should wait and follow the host’s lead. The best seat is the one that faces the east or the door. Hosts usually sit facing the west.
Greeting Etiquette
Bow, in Chinese zuoyi, means having their hands folded in front in different ways. Today, besides zuoyi gesture, people greet each other by nodding, smiling, and handshaking.
The fist-and-palm salute is another type of zuoyi, with the fist of right hand covered by the left hand. It first appeared in the army when people held weapons (武器) while showing respect to others. So, people always use the left hand to cover the right hand that holds weapons.
26. What place should your teacher be when three people walk together with you in ancient China?
A. On the left. B. On the right. C. In the middle. D. At the back.
27. As guests, what is the best way to choose seats at a dinner?
A. We should sit facing the west. B. We should choose the best seat.
C. We should sit anywhere quickly. D. We should wait and follow the host.
28. What can we know from the Greeting Etiquette?
A. Nodding and smiling are impolite now.
B. People only use zuoyi to greet others now.
C. People always use right hand to cover left hand.
D. The fist-and-palm salute came from the army first.

Have you ever heard of upcycling? It is a way of turning old or unnecessary things into something useful and often beautiful.
Is it the same as recycling? Recycling usually takes old things, like paper and glass, and breaks them down to make a new product. When you upcycle an object, you are probably doing something different. You can simply refashion it. For example, you might make a bag out of an old T-shirt. Also, the upcycled object is usually in the same, or even better condition.
Upcycling isn’t a new idea. Some of the best examples of modern-day upcycling come from the old times. In those days, people used things again and again for different purposes until they could not be used any more. Upcycling is a way of life. Things shouldn’t be just thrown away when they can be saved and turned into something useful.
It’s clear that upcycling is green. It is also considered to be more environmentally friendly than recycling. Upcycling can just need your own ideas and work, but recycling needs energy or water to break down things.
Sally, a young woman from the UK, takes used tea bags and turns them into dresses, shoes and even hats. Every day she drinks some tea, then dries out the tea bags with the tea still in them. When they’re dry, she takes the tea out and puts the bags together to make an item of clothing. This can take a long time, but Sally has made lots of artworks.
In fact, whether you create objects from old things or buy ready-made products from upcycled things, both ways are helpful for the environment and can bring you something that’s both beautiful and useful. Get started today!
29. What does the underlined word “refashion” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Collect used things. B. Create things out of old ones.
C. Break down useless things. D. Come up with good ideas.
30. How is upcycling different from recycling?
A. It’s a greener way of life. B. It needs more energy.
C. It needs ideas from others. D. It’s a completely new idea.
31. Why does the writer tell the story of Sally in Paragraph 5?
A. To list the steps of doing upcycling.
B. To give a good example of upcycling.
C. To express a different idea of upcycling.
D. To provide basic knowledge of upcycling.

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had come to the top. I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to run away. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea.”
“I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We went through it, and we were on the sea floor.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper.
As we were a hundred metres under the water, we could still see quite well. Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” there were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small bushes grew under the large seaweed trees. It was an amazing experience.
Three hours later, we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we explored further.
— Adapted from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea

Chinese companies are producing lots of cheap and safe batteries. These batteries power most of the world’s electric cars and many clean energy systems, showing that China is making fast progress in new technology and production. Today, China plays an important role in the global battery industry.
A main reason for this progress is China’s strong support for education and research. There are nearly 50 graduate programs focusing on battery chemistry and metal science, a closely related subject. On the other hand, only a few US professors work on battery research.
Central South University in Changsha plays a key role in this field. Changsha is a center of China’s chemical industry, and the university has a large, modern campus with nearly 60,000 college and graduate students. With the help of good tools, like powerful microscopes and advanced test machines, its labs help support the research. Every day, hundreds of new batteries are tested there to make them work better.
When it comes to research spending, China spent 2.6 percent of its economy on Research and Development last year and its number is going up little by little. With school training, academic programs and lab support, China is quickly becoming stronger in new energy technology. With these efforts, China will keep leading the way in green battery technology.

He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island.”(船长发出邀请b);接着“We stepped into a room and closed the door... another door opened. We went through it, and we were on the sea floor.”(穿过大门抵达海底c);随后“We were about ten metres under the water... enjoyed the colours of the shells... crossed a large grassy area.”(看见彩色贝壳、穿过大片海草区域d);最后“As we were a hundred metres under the water... This was the forest.”(抵达海底森林a)。完整顺序为b-c-d-a。

【答案】
例文:
Dear Lily,
I’m really happy to receive your email! You asked how we middle school students behave politely in daily life, so let me share some of our practices with you.
First, we show good manners in daily life. We greet teachers politely at school and keep quiet in public places like libraries. Second, we help in the community or charities. Many students visit old people’s homes or clean parks on weekends. Third, protecting the environment is important for us. We sort waste and save water in daily life. In my opinion, being honest and friendly to everyone around us is also necessary. These rules help us become better people. I hope you can understand Chinese culture better through these actions. Welcome to China!
I can’t wait to meet you and show you around our school soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
