Last winter, 14-year-old Li Lei was helping his family clear out their old house when he came across a dusty (布满灰尘的) wooden box in the corner. Curious, he opened it and discovered that it was filled with letters, old photos, and a small ___1___. The handwriting on the cover was his grandfather’s.
“What is all this?” Li Lei asked, ___2___ the diary up.
His grandfather, now in his seventies, took the diary gently from him. A smile ___3___ across his face as he turned the yellowing pages. “These are from my childhood,” he said softly. “I wrote this diary when I was about your ___4___.”
Li Lei sat down beside his grandfather and began to read. The words painted a picture of a world that felt both faraway and strangely close. His grandfather wrote about walking six kilometres to school every morning, carrying a small bag of rice for lunch. There was no internet, no mobile phone, not even a bicycle in the family. Yet the diary was filled not with complaints (抱怨), but with simple ___5___—catching fish in the village pond, reading borrowed books by candlelight, and the excitement of receiving a letter from a faraway relative.
“I can ___6___ imagine that,” Li Lei said. “Six kilometres on foot, every ___7___ day?”
His grandfather nodded. “I was one of the lucky ones. Many children in my village never got the chance to go to school at all.” Li Lei fell ___8___ for a moment.
That evening, Li Lei thought about his own life. Each morning, his father drove him to school in the family car. He had a smartphone and the ___9___ to get more information in one day than his grandfather could have found in a whole year. Yet he had hardly ever thought about how much had changed in just two generations (代).
Before leaving the old house, Li Lei asked his grandfather ____10____ he could keep the diary. His grandfather agreed, and Li Lei placed it carefully in his own bag. He decided to write about his own life, so that one day his grandchildren might also discover what their world was once like.

“Not Mrs Caliban!” cried Barbara.
“Mrs Caliban is a bad fairy. When Tim put a fried egg in her letter box, she turned him into a lizard with her magic stick. He was a lizard all afternoon.”
“Maybe Tim enjoyed being a lizard,” said Barbara’s mother. “I think you will have a lot of fun with Mrs Caliban. She might even help you with your star map.”
“Oh, all right!” said Barbara. “Anyhow, I don’t mind being a lizard from time to time. I’ve often wondered what flies (苍蝇) taste like.”
The next Monday, Mrs Caliban met Barbara after school. She was wearing black boots under her pink fairy dress. She had a worn old magic stick hidden under her arm.
“What did you do in school today?” she asked.
“I made a star map,” said Barbara. “But it is hard to make a good star map on a little piece of paper. I need a piece of paper as big as a whole room.”
“I have had problems, too,” said Mrs Caliban. “I used to have all my gold pieces in a pelican money box. But now the pelican wants to go back to Spain. See? There it goes now!”
Mrs Caliban opened her door. Gold pieces were piled on top of the piano.
“I can’t leave my gold pieces on top of the piano,” she said. “They fall down behind it when I play. Oh, where am I going to get another pelican?”
“Try a kangaroo (袋鼠),” said Barbara, who was always full of great ideas. “A kangaroo could keep all your gold pieces in its baby carrier.”
“A kangaroo would be too restless,” said Mrs Caliban. “It would be jumping up and down all the time. I want a money box that is roomy and quiet, and that’s not the only trouble I have. What about my stormy indoor roof?”
Barbara looked up at the roof. It was as black as a thundercloud. There were spiderwebs (蜘蛛网) in the corner.
“When I do my exercises, rains fall down on me,” said Mrs Caliban. “But if I paint the indoor roof blue, I will trouble the spiders.”
“Use magic on the indoor roof,” said Barbara.

At any bus stop or while waiting in line, most people keep their heads down and scroll (滚动) on their phones. But studies show that if you can stop doing this and let your mind wander (daydream), there are many great benefits for you.
We spend nearly half of our waking time daydreaming, but it is not always pleasant. A study found that some people even liked electric shocks (冲击) better than being alone with their own thoughts. That’s why we often take out our phones when we have nothing to do.
A professor named Erin Westgate says mindless scrolling is like “brain candy”—it makes you happy for a short time but has no real meaning. She also says human achievements mostly come from deep thinking.
So next time you have a few minutes free, put away your phone and let your mind wander. Many people are afraid of being bored, but this fear is often unnecessary. In a 2022 study, people thought they would dislike 20 minutes of doing nothing, but they felt happier than expected. Mind-wandering can help us learn better and understand others more easily.
Mind-wandering also helps solve problems. When we are not thinking hard, our brains are still active. This lets ideas connect in new ways, which is good for solving difficult problems. Besides, daydreaming makes our relationships with others closer. It helps us feel closer to our family and friends and deal with social situations better.
Researcher Kou Murayama now tries to stop checking his phone during short waits and let his thoughts wander. He finds that pleasing himself with daydreams is both satisfying and meaningful.
21. Why do people always look at their phones at bus stops?
A. They enjoy reading news on phones.
B. They believe daydreaming has no benefits.
C. They want to kill time with funny phone games.
D. They dislike staying alone with their own thoughts.
22. Which is one of the benefits of mind-wandering?
A. It helps us use phones better. B. It makes us dislike being alone.
C. It helps improve understanding. D. It makes us prefer electric shocks.
23. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________.
But is scrolling on phones really helpful?
A. Para 2. B. Para 3. C. Para 4. D. Para 5.
24. Which may be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Solve Problems B. Why We Fear Being Alone
C. The Danger of Using Phones D. Put Away Your Phone and Daydream
25. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards mind-wandering?
A. Hopeful. B. Positive. C. Interested. D. Doubtful.

Good Morning, Everyone!
Welcome to today’s “School Voice”. Have you noticed the new scale (秤) in our school dining hall? ____26____. It’s part of our school’s “Clear Your Plate 2.0” activity, which was started last month to reduce food waste.
____27____ After lunch, each class takes its food waste to the weighing station. A student volunteer records the weight on a special chart (图表). The class with the least waste each week receives a prize. “At first, some students were unhappy about it,” says Li Mei, a student volunteer. “But now, most of us have got used to it. To be honest, we didn’t expect it would be so meaningful.”
Students who finish their meals can earn points. ____28____ For example, 10 points can get you a piece of fruit, and 20 points for a yogurt. Sounds good, right?
Some students may still wonder: Why do we need to weigh our food waste instead of just asking students to eat less? ____29____ Every piece of rice comes from farmers’ hard work. Food waste also harms our environment because it creates waste and uses up valuable resources. By weighing food waste, we can clearly see how much we are wasting—and try to do better.
The activity has already shown real results. ____30____ However, not everyone believes the numbers—some say students are just eating less to avoid losing face. So next time you eat in the dining hall, remember: a clean plate is not just good manners. It’s a smart choice for our planet!
— The Students’ Union
A. The answer is clear.
B. Here is how it works.
C. But is an 18% drop truly meaningful?
D. These points can be exchanged for small prizes at the dining hall.
E. The scale is used to weigh how much food each class throws away.
F. In just one month, the dining hall’s food waste has dropped by 18%.
G. Some teachers doubt whether the scale will really change students’ eating habits.

G. Some teachers doubt whether the scale will really change students’ eating habits.
