Recipe for Disaster Relief (救援)
José Andrés is an award-winning chef. He’s usually in the kitchen at one of his many nice restaurants. But often, he gives up his comfortable daily life, takes his pan and rushes into the fire, a hurricane or any kind of natural disaster where people need fresh food. And that’s when Chef Andrés can be found on the front lines of the disaster. He’s there in a simple kitchen, cooking lots of food quickly.
In 2017, a serious hurricane named Maria hit Puerto Rico Thousands of people died. People lost their homes. Most of the island was without power. And cities and towns were completely cut off from highways. But none of this stopped Andrés. He got there preparing meals just a few days after Maria struck.
At first, he fed the doctors, nurses, and caregivers there. As the situation got worse, he got help from a relief group World Central Kitchen (WCK). He started it in 2010 to help people hit by the Haiti earthquake. Soon 19,000 volunteers in 25 simple kitchens were serving over 150,000 meals a day.
In September 2019, there was another huge storm: Hurricane Dorian. It ruined parts of the Bahamas. This time, however, Andrés and his WCK team arrived before the hurricane. They collected food and built kitchens and served 1,000,000 meals to survivors.
So why does he do it? “ ” Andrés said. For him, that emergency leaves no room for a quiet, comfortable life.
This thinking has brought Andrés and WCK to other disasters around the world: A volcanic eruption in Guatemala. A cyclone in Mozambique. An earthquake in Indonesia, and more.
To praise his amazing work, Andrés was nominated (提名) for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. Then, he was off to help with the wildfires in Southern California.
had better do sth.
fresh fruit属于不可数名词;a great many“许多”、a large number of“大量”都只能修饰可数名词复数,a great deal of可以修饰不可数名词,符合本句语境。
be similar to意为“与……
Passage B
Last Saturday, our class visited a small animal care center near the river. It was ____7____ a hot day that many of us felt very tired. But we kept on working. In one quiet room, a brown dog ____8____ on a soft blanket and watched us carefully. My friend Lily cleaned a small cage by ____9____ while the keeper prepared food. A young cat was ____10____, but it still tried to stand when we came closer. The keeper showed us ____11____ the rabbits safely without frightening them. After that, we helped wash bowls and fill water bottles. We also kept a few clean towels nearby ____12____ an animal needed help later. By the end of the visit, we understood why patience matters when caring for animals.
7. A. too B. so C. such
8. A. lie B. lay C. lied
9. A. her B. hers C. herself
10. A. injure B. injured C. injury
11. A. how we could feed B. how could we feed C. how you could feed
12. A. in case B. in short C. in return
7. C 8. B 9. C 10. B 11. A 12. A
