It seemed like a magic, but it was actually the work of 400 hungry goats. West Sacramento has used goats 48 tall grass since eight years ago. It had let the goats out 49 weeks before the fire. They ate the dry plants of an area as large as two football fields every day. This created a firebreak, which is an open space with no plants. The fire had nothing to burn, 50 it stopped spreading.
Many cities hire goats to help stop fires. And some cities hire goats to clear invasive (入侵性的) plants, too. Take a look at Riverside Park in New York City. Goats have been “working” there 51 three years and they love the sweet taste of the invasive plants there. A worker from the park said, “We’re 52 to have the goats here. Everyone benefits from it. The goats get to enjoy the park’s invasive plants, the park’s natural environment is improved, and people get to see goats in their local park.”
In Colorado, Lani Malmberg and her son Donny Benz have about 1,200 goats. They have travelled to 17 states to create firebreaks and remove harmful plants. Malmberg has 53 helped start the Goatapelli Foundation. It is 54 organization that teaches people how to work with goats in their own communities. Malmberg believes goats are a great tool for 55 fires. She said, “There is no machine out there that can do what a goat can do.”

Every year we are given a volunteer day. On that day we can leave the office and choose to volunteer with an organization of our choice. Last year, my team chose to volunteer as a group at the Royal Children’s Hospital in the cancer ward (癌症病房). The hospital had asked that we should make Christmas cards with the kids, and generally just keep them company, whether waiting between doctors’ visits or staying in their room.
With our day at RCH drawing near, many of us in the team were feeling quite nervous about what we would do when seeing children who were so sick. I tried to deal with these nerves (紧张) by baking the night before as we’d been asked to provide morning tea. Later I was feeling more confident.
We arrived at RCH and our first piece of work was to offer morning tea to the children and their families who were waiting to see doctors.
It seems nothing breaks the ice better than chocolate or sugar! It was then time to start making Christmas cards. We had come with things shiny and fun that can get even those big kids excited!
It was amazing that our nerves immediately went away. By sitting and talking with the kids, and helping them make cards, we realized that though they were sick, they were open and happy.
To say that I did not feel down that day would not be honest. However, we were able to put smiles on faces. Many thanks to the nurses, doctors, parents and children at the RCH for welcoming us, and allowing us to experience the joy that kids bring.

When Keller was eight years old, she began to make care bags (爱心包) by hand. She put daily necessities in them and gave the bags to homeless people. Later, she set up a charity called Keller Cares. She wanted to spread kindness across the world.
Keller got this idea after she saw a homeless woman near her school. She felt really sorry for the woman and decided to do something to help. This special experience made her start to take action.

Kylee entered a new school. In the first week, she had a chance to join the school’s basketball team—Titans.
In April, Titans had a match. During the match, Kylee’s teammate, Irene, didn’t pass the ball to Kylee four times. Irene passed it to other teammates. In the end, Titans lost. The girls were sad and tired after the match.
The next day, Coach Cline met with Kylee in the playground. They had a talk and Cline knew what happened. He said, “Actually, kids who don’t play as a team will not play in this team.” Kylee realised Irene might not play again, but it was a mistake to kick Irene off (踢出) the team. She had to help Irene.
At lunch, Kylee asked Irene why she didn’t like her. “My best friend Beth just moved away. You replaced her in the team,” Irene said. “I miss my old friend.”
“I am sorry. But it’s crazy if we let that stop us from winning. Will you try playing with me?” Kylee asked. Irene agreed.
In May, Coach Cline let Irene play the last match. With ten seconds left, both teams got the same points. Kylee took the ball and she saw Irene was near the net. Kylee passed the ball to Irene. It went into the net just in time. Finally, they won the match because of good teamwork.

Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most amazing natural wonders, lies on the border (边界) between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Africa. The falls are about 1.7 kilometers wide and 108 meters high, making them the largest curtain of falling water on Earth. Local people call them “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, which means “the smoke that thunders”. From May to October every year, thousands of visitors come to see the beautiful rainbow that forms above the falls and feel the power of nature. However, this wonder is facing two serious threats. First, climate change has made droughts more common in recent years. Less rain means the flow (水流) of the Zambezi River, which feeds the falls, becomes weaker. Sometimes, parts of the falls even dry up completely. Second, extreme weather events like heavy storms and floods have also become more frequent. These storms erode (侵蚀) the land around the falls and put visitors in danger when they come too close to the edge.
Protecting Victoria Falls is not just about keeping a tourist attraction beautiful. It is about protecting the local ecosystem and the lives of people who depend on the river. Understanding these problems is the first step to keeping this natural wonder safe for the future.

Language is always changing and developing. This isn’t a bad thing. If English hadn’t changed for a long time, we wouldn’t have words to describe telephones, washing machines, computers or some other new things.
Language changes for several reasons. First, it changes because the needs of its speaker change. New technologies, new products, and new experiences need new words to express them clearly. Another reason for change is that different people have different language experiences. People use different sets of words and expressions, because they have different ages, jobs, education levels and so on.
How does language develop then? On the one hand, many of the languages changes begin with young people. When young people communicate with others of their own age, their language grows in grammar, words and expressions that are different from the older people’s. Some have a short lifetime but others can influence the language for long. On the other hand, we get new words in many different ways. We borrow them from other languages, we create them by making words shorter or combining words and we make them out of proper names.
Languages that don’t change over time are considered dead languages. The fact that English changes so much shows that it’s alive and well.

(25-26九年级上·广东肇庆·开学考试)A.回答问题
请阅读下面短文,根据所提供的信息,回答5个问题。要求所写答案语法正确、语义完整切题。

Dear Tom,
How is it going? I’m writing to tell you something about the Science and Technology Festival. It was held on the playground last Tuesday. It began at 8 in the morning and ended at 6 in the afternoon.
At the festival, some students took part in the robot model-making competition. Many of their robots, which were the most wonderful part of the festival, drew people’s attention. These robots were in the shape of lovely animals such as rabbits, monkeys and dogs. They were doing some simple tasks like cleaning the floor and throwing away rubbish. What’s more, some other students carried out scientific experiments. The students who were present at the festival gave them cheers of encouragement.
I was surprised and glad to feel the beauty of technology. The festival not only developed students’ interest in science and technology but also broadened our horizons.
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours truly
Li Hua
