That idea crossed my mind while I was happily skipping (蹦跳着走), as if I were six years old instead of fourteen, to the other side of the road, where many pumpkins were exhibited. In the sea of pumpkins were many little children. Some were happily appreciating and picking up their favorite pumpkins; some were excitedly cutting pumpkins into the shapes they liked. This scene immediately attracted my eyes. Beside the sea of pumpkins was the Pumpkin Balloon House. When stepping in, you would be surrounded by amazing, unique balloons. Almost every year I would play with the balloons, but this time something was holding me back. When I was watching the house, some voice inside my heart was telling me, “Now that you’re older, you shouldn’t do that.” I fought with that voice and begged my mother, “Can I go into the Pumpkin Balloon House?” “Why?” she questioned. Feeling upset, I glanced around to find a way to convince her that I needed my youth back. When finding my admiration for a little girl who was having fun in the Balloon House, my mother understood my desire and said, “OK.” I was so excited. As soon as I entered the house, I enjoyed myself to the fullest. That day when I stayed in the Balloon House was a truly important and meaningful day in my life journey. It was because on that day I understood youth was about being completely free, not caring about other people’s opinions of you, and never growing too old for fun. 1.What does the underlined part in paragraph 1 probably mean? (no more than 5 words) 2.What scene in the sea of pumpkins attracted the author? (no more than 10 words) 3.How did the author react when seeing the Pumpkin Balloon House? (no more than 15words) 4.Why did the author consider the day in the Pumpkin Balloon House significant? (no more than 15 words) 5.What can you learn from this story? Please explain it in your own words. (no more than 20 words) Passage 2 I remember sitting in front of the TV as a child, watching American Idol. I loved hearing so many beautiful voices, and I always wished that mine sounded like theirs. As an eight-year-old girl, I certainly couldn’t shine like all the talented men and women I heard on the radio, but it didn’t stop me from trying. In the fifth grade, I began participating in the musical theater. I tried out for the play, only to realize how weak and small my voice was. I was disappointed. But I kept trying. One day, fourteen-year-old me was sitting in the car with my father when a song came on the radio. Amy Lee’s voice was strong and powerful, and she possessed elegance. I immediately knew that I wanted to sound exactly like she did. I spent countless hours singing to music like Fallen and The Open Door in my room. I modeled my own voice on Lee’s. I became passionate about finding my voice and spent my waking hours trying to find out how to sound better. I read article after article on how to get my voice improved, but none of them made a difference. I was able to strengthen my voice, but I still possessed few techniques. I remained a shower singer until I joined my high school’s chorus in the second year. Much to my surprise, my chorus director placed me as a soprano (女高音). At first, I was doubtful, but through further exploration I realized that my range was much wider than I had previously believed. I learned to breathe properly and develop my range and tone. More importantly, I removed the word “can’t” from my vocabulary. I learned that the only thing holding me back was myself. My greatest realization was that I must open my mind before I could effectively use my instrument. 1.What was the author’s reaction after she watched American Idol? (no more than 10 words) 2.What made the author disappointed after trying out for the play in the fifth grade? (no more than 5 words) 3.How did the author strengthen her voice? (no more than 15 words) 4.How do you understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words) 5.What do you think of the author? Please explain. (no more than 20 words) Passage When I was a teenager, I used to listen to heavy metal and hard rock music while studying. It allowed me to silence the disturbing sounds of the TV in the living room of our small home. However, as I grew older, I started to move away from loud, intense music, and gradually into slower and calmer music. Then accidentally, I discovered minimalism. As a musician and composer myself, I started my own minimalist adventure. As the years went by, other pieces of the minimalist philosophy started to fall into place: minimalist films, literature, architecture, etc. Eventually, I decided that it was time to part with my hectic life that was full of various things to deal with, important or unimportant. I quit my job and became a writer at first. Gradually, I found inner peace and only focused on what was important. The last piece of the puzzle came when my wife and I decided to become digital nomads We left our house behind, sold the stuff we’d been accumulating for years, packed up our stuff in a suitcase, and moved to a different country: Estonia. There we set up our own business that we could manage without any trouble as we traveled the world. I think the final minimalist achievement is living only with what you can carry with you. Now I travel the world with what I carry in my suitcase. So I live the laptop life. Everything I strictly need is in my bag. Minimalism has taken away piles of things that place burdens on us — psychological ones, emotional ones, etc. Apart from the pure physical accumulation of stuff, there are other circumstances where the “Less Is More” principle can simplify your life. Keeping things simple is useful at work or in our life in general. 1.Why did the author listen to heavy metal and hard rock music while studying? (no more than 10 words) 2.How did the author react after he discovered minimalism? (no more than 5 words) 3.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean? (1 word) 4.What is the author’s life like right now? (no more than 15 words) 5.Would you like to live a life of minimalism? Why or why not? (no more than 20 words) Passage Chen Xingrong won five medals, including a gold; at the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 8th National Special Olympics Games. Born in Hainan Province, Chen Xingrong could not say a word until he was 2 years old. When Chen Xingrong was found autistic (自闭的) , his parents were worried. In2012, his father learned that swimming could help people with autism, so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. When Chen Xingrong was 5 years old, he began to teach him how to swim. At the very beginning, he spent three months teaching his son, but all his efforts failed. To his surprise, after another three months, he discovered that his son had developed the ability to control his breath underwater, which greatly boosted his confidence, and swimming soon became a key activity of the family. His father planned all his exercises for him at first, but then it was all up to him. He decided how many exercises he wanted to do, and his parents respected his choices. It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions. As well as swimming, learning basic life skills is also an important part of life for a teenager with autism. His father hopes that his son can live well on his own when he and his wife grow old. To help the public to know more about autistic people so as to reduce misunderstanding, he once organized about 500 people to watch an autism-themed film. Thanks to his father’s endless efforts, Chen Xingrong has learned to buy food in the market in their neighborhood. He also does voluntary jobs at supermarkets and fast-food restaurants, such as arranging shelves and cleaning dining tables. “He is good at skillfully arranging things. He is part of the community, and I hope he will live a wonderful life in the future,” his father says proudly. 1.How long did it take Chen Xingrong to master breath control underwater? (No more than 5 words) 2.What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 2? (1 word) 3.What led to Chen Xingrong’s success in swimming competitions? (No more than 20 words) Passage My name is Matthew. I’m not someone who has many secrets, because I’m a terrible liar. But there is one huge secret that I kept for years — I failed my driving test. I had never failed a test before, and had never even come close. Driving made me anxious, but my parents told me I had to. They signed me up for driving lessons. I had gotten a perfect score for my written permit exam (驾照笔试考试), but getting behind the wheel was a different story. But when October 30th rolled around, my pride set in. I wanted to be like everyone else at my school, showing off the brand new license they’d gotten. Looking back on that special day, I can’t remember if I was nervous. What I do remember is starting the test, pausing (暂停) at a stop sign after a few seconds, and being asked by the instructor to pull over (靠边停车). I had received an auto-fail since my pause was indeed a pause and not a real stop. I wasn’t upset that I was leaving without a license, but I was scared everyone would know that I had failed. So when I got to class, I told everyone I didn’t want to take the test on my birthday. One Friday a month later, I went to the test spot again and passed. Later that night I drove for the first time by myself, which brought to me an amazing feeling I’ve never experienced — but still, I couldn’t imagine ever telling anyone the truth. So I didn’t. It wasn’t until midway through college that I came clean. It turned-out plenty of my college friends had failed too! And I called up all my courage to speak the fact out. Yes, I had also failed. Now I realize failure and imperfection are two things everyone has to experience, without which one couldn’t make a true man. 1.How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 1? (1 word) 2.Why did the instructor ask Matthew to pull over? (no more than 8 words) 3.What made Matthew feel extremely worried after his first attempt? (no more than 7 words) 4.According to Paragraph 3, what marked the turning point in the author’s growth? (no more than 15 words) 5.What did you learn from Matthew’s experience? Put it in your own words. (no more than 25 words) Passage 6 Curry Pizza Company, a pizza place in California, is offering customers a “Talk to Each Other Discount (折扣) ”. The discount is only suitable for groups of four people or more. And all of them must be carrying a working smartphone. If they are qualified (有资格的) , they will receive a free large pizza that they can enjoy on their next visit, or, if they’re ready to help others, donate it to the homeless in downtown Fresno. “Our goal is to encourage customers to stop using their phones while eating and talk to each other,” a Curry Pizza Company announcement on Facebook states. “If you like, you may receive a free large pizza on your next visit or you can donate your free large pizza to the needy. We donate pizzas to the homeless every month. And we would add your donated pizza along with the many others.” Owner Varinder Malhi said that he was inspired by his own phone usage. Wanting to set a good example for his children, he decided to only use his phone at home for emergencies After experiencing the benefits of a smartphone break, he wanted to stimulate others to try it as well. Malhi added that in order to be suitable for the “Talk to Each Other Discount”, groups must have at least four people, because when the number of customers is less than four, people talk to each other more naturally. All members of the group must carry a smartphone and agree to have restaurant staff lock it up during the meal. To prevent scammers (骗子) from taking advantage of the discount to get a free pizza, a Curry Pizza Company cashier will check all the smartphones to make sure they have service, and are not just old phones. The offer was announced about 3 weeks ago, and so far, the Curry Pizza Company has given away 40 to 50 large pizzas. 1.What do qualified customers must carry? (no more than 5 words) 2.What is Curry Pizza Company’s purpose in offering customers discount? (no more than 10 words) 3.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean? (1 word) 4.Why does Curry Pizza Company have a request for the number of customers? (no more than 15 words) 5.What do you think of “Talk to Each Other Discount”? Please explain. (no more than 25 words) Passage Once upon a time, there was an old man in Basra whose only job was caring for and loving his only son. His son was a handsome young man. The old man invested all his money in his son’s education. The young man was away for a few years and got an education at a well-known university. The day arrived for the son to return from his studies. When the son came and met his father, the old man looked into his eyes and felt great disappointment. “What have you learnt my son?” he asked. “I have learnt everything there was to be learnt, Father,” the son answered. “But have you learnt what cannot be taught?” asked the Father. “Go, my son and learn what cannot be taught,” said the old man. The young man went back to his master and asked his master to teach him what couldn’t be taught. “Go away to the mountains with these four hundred sheep and come back when they are one thousand,” said the master. The young man went to the mountains and became a shepherd (牧羊人). There for the first time he met a silence. He had no one to talk to. The sheep did not understand his language. In his desperation (绝望), he would talk to those sheep but they would look back at him as if to say he was stupid. Slowly but surely, he began to forget all his worldly knowledge and his pride. He became quiet, like the sheep and great wisdom and humility (谦逊)came to him. At the end of two years when the number of the sheep had grown to one thousand, he returned to his master. “Now you have learnt what cannot be taught,” said the master. 1.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “invested” in the first paragraph? (1 word) 2.What did the old man ask his son to do when his son came back? (no more than 8 words) 3.How did the young man’s master educate the young man in the passage? (no more than 15 words) 4.Why did the young man talk to the sheep in the mountains? (no more than 10 words) 5.Do you agree with the master’s way of education? Please explain. (no more than 25 words) Passage I’ve loved to sew (缝) all my life. I started sewing clothes for my dolls when I was 7. My mother showed me how to stitch with a needle and thread, and it was my favorite pastime when it was too cold and snowy to play outside. As a teenager, I began to design and sew my own outfits. I cut out paper patterns to construct dresses and skirts, and I’d sit at the old sewing machine for hours. In my late 20s, I began to buy used and vintage clothes to upcycle and refashion. My favorite places to buy vintage clothes are thrift shops (旧货店) and church rummage sales. However, about 10 years ago, when I was ripping (撕) out the silk lining (内衬) from a beautiful long blue evening dress, I stopped. There was a hidden pocket in the front that I failed to notice as I merrily ripped at the seams (线缝). I pulled out an old photo of a young woman wearing the very same blue evening dress. A long silver chain necklace hung gracefully down the front of the dress, and she was holding a black purse. She had a soft smile, and she looked to be in her early 20s. Somebody else wore this dress many years ago. Who was she? Did she wear it to the theater? To a fancy dinner party? And I was now tearing it apart. I felt guilty. I mentioned my concerns and guilt to my daughter. She said, “Mom, you should be proud of your upcycling and your sewing creations. You are keeping clothes out of the landfill (垃圾填埋场), and you’re creating new fashions. Consider it a bonus if you find objects in the pockets. The clothes are talking to you!” I decided to pay respect to this upcycling discovery — and the many others I’ve found over the years — by displaying them on a bulletin board in my sewing room. These discoveries have made me enjoy refashioning and upcycling clothes even more. But I have learned to be a little gentler when I rip seams open with my scissors, and I approach pockets more carefully. 1.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about? (no more than 10 words) 2.How did the author feel immediately after discovering the photo in the dress pocket? (no more than 2 words) 3.What does the word “bonus” mean in Paragraph 5? (no more than 2 words) 4.What does the author do with her upcycling discoveries made over the years (no more than 15words) 5.If you found a personal item in second-hand clothes, how would you deal with it? Why? (no more than 20 words) Passage Before Christmas last year I found a charity that was looking for workers to show care to the elderly. I wrote to the charity and asked if I could send gifts to some elderly people of their choosing, and some Christmas cards to more elderly shut-ins Thankfully they consented. I left the cards unsealed (未封口的) so the recipients could read the messages. I became really enthusiastic about the project designing colorful decorations on the cards to make them personal. I signed my name and the charity’s name to avoid any confusion about who I was. I left it to the charity to decide who would best receive a card. This was so much fun! I loved sending these cards to elderly people who might not receive much attention during the holidays. If I had had more money, I would have given more gifts, but I could only send about 20little gift bags containing candy, special soap, towels, and other items. Despite this, it was a great pleasure for me. The charity kindly wrapped my gifts with the paper I provided and delivered everything to recipients all over the area. According to them, the gifts were much appreciated. I hope so. But I know I was the one who benefited most. It was a joy trying to cheer up strangers who I knew would be shut-ins due to illness during the holidays. To me, it was truly a glorious experience! Such a little thing to do, but maybe it made at least one person smile. I truly hope so. That was my intention — to spread love and hope for the best. Reflecting on the experience, I realize how meaningful it was. The joy of knowing that I might have brightened someone’s day, even if just for a moment, was incredibly fulfilling. It reinforced the idea that small acts of kindness can have a big impact. I look forward to continuing this tradition and finding new ways to bring joy to those who need it most. 1.What is the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 1? (1 word) 2.What kind of people did the author want to send his cards to? (no more than 10 words) 3.Why did the author sign his name and the charity’s name on the cards? (no more than 10 words) 4.Why did the author think he was the one who benefited most? (no more than 15 words) 5.How does the author’s story inspire you to help others? Please explain. (no more than 25 words) Passage In 2015, Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old woman, became the first Chinese scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Born in Ningbo in 1930, Youyou’ was named after a verse in the Book of Songs. When she left Ningbo and headed to China’s capital to further her studies in 1951, Tu chose medicine. After graduating from the School of Medicine at Peking University four years later, Tu started to work at China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (now China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences). Then she got married and settled down in Beijing. In 1969, everything changed when Tu was tasked with searching for a new malaria treatment in nature. She went to Hainan, where the disease was widespread. In the hot and wet rain forests of southern China, Tu studied the disease. It was in ancient Chinese medicine that Tu found the key to beating the disease. Back in Beijing, Tu and her team examined hundreds of books about traditional Chinese medicine and interviewed many experienced Chinese medical doctors to gather the necessary information. She collected over 2,000 prescriptions, summarising 640 of them in a single collection of anti-malarial prescriptions. After long hard research Tu’s team found the answer in an ancient medical book, written by Ge Hong  (284—364) of the East Jin dynasty, which stated that sweet wormwood (Qinghao) was a treatment for malaria. Tu’s team started running tests on the plant. At first, the results were mixed. But after much persistence, they found something in the plant that could treat malaria — artemisinin. They tested it on animals, but were not satisfied as the results were not conclusive. In order to speed up the process, Tu decided to test artemisinin on herself. “As head of this research group, it was my duty,” she said. The treatment worked and was safe for humans. Artemisinin became an important tool in the fight against malaria in Africa and Asia. Thanks to this discovery, millions of lives were saved. “Of course, the discovery was a really happy moment in my career as a researcher,” Tu said. A modest person, Tu speaks of her training in Chinese medicine and the help of her team as the reasons for her success. However, it was her passionate commitment to finding a cure that made the struggle worthwhile. NOTES 1. “Youyou” refers to the sound that a deer makes to call other deer. 2. Book of Songs, also Classic of Poetry, is a collection of ancient Chinese poetry. 1.What did Tu Youyou study at Peking University?(no more than 5 words) 2.What did Tu Youyou and her team do to find a treatment for malaria? Please give an example.(no more than 15 words) 3.What does the word “persistence” mean in Paragraph 6?(no more than 2 words) 4.Why did Tu Youyou decide to test artemisinin on herself? (no more than 15 words) 5.How does Tu Youyou’s story inspire you in pursuing your goals? Please explain in your own words.(no more than 20 words) Passage The world is becoming less livable because of climate change and the loss of nature. What do you think would help you and your friends change your lifestyles and do something to make a healthier planet? How can we empower young people to help protect the Earth? Education might help. For years, experts have developed environmental education programs with the goal of helping people understand the natural environment and what we can do to protect it. Many environmental education programs are developed for young people like you. You have more power to make a difference than you might think. Why? You have a long future ahead of you. This means that how you choose to live now will make a big difference over the course of your life. Your lifestyle choices can even inspire your parents and grandparents’ generations. Environmental education programs seem like a very good thing. But do they really work? The short answer is yes. By searching large online databases of scientific studies, we found that environmental education programs deeply influence people’s knowledge: Young people who take part in environmental education learn a lot about nature, the climate, and what they can do to protect the environment. We also found that environmental education has meaningful effects on attitudes: Young people feel positive about the environment and motivated to protect it. Finally, environmental education encourages environmental behavior: Young people who have taken part in environmental education are more likely to do things to protect the environment, such as recycling waste or taking shorter showers to save water, carrying a reusable water bottle, or turning off the lights when leaving a room. Overall, we found the benefits of environmental education programs can be very broad. They help young people know about, care about, and do things to protect the environment. Environmental education can be a powerful way to prepare young people for the future. It does not only help young people understand what environmental problems we face — it also encourages them to act. But still, some important questions remain. For example, what is the best way for teachers to teach environmental education? Which activities (for example, learning in class or going to a camp) work best for children of different age groups? There is no right answer — the most important thing is to learn from each other’s perspectives. 1.Why is the world becoming less livable? (No more than 10 words) 2.What is the goal of environmental education programs? (No more than 15 words) 3.What does the underlined word “motivated” mean? (No more than 1 word) 4.What are the benefits of environmental education programs? (No more than 15 words) 5.According to the passage, what activity can you design for an environmental education program to influence young people? What are the influences? (No more than 20 words) Passage As towns grow and humans use more land, wild spaces get smaller. Feeding grounds, shelters and migration routes for wild creatures disappear. Animals are increasingly having to put up with sharing their natural habitats with humans. Other creatures find that their territory has been cut in two by a road, and they risk their lives trying to cross it. Around the world, however, people are creating clever ways to help humans and wild animals avoid conflict, and live side by side. Earlier this year, work began on a wildlife bridge in Gloucestershire, England. At 37 metres wide, about half a jumbo jet’s wingspan, it will cross eight lanes of traffic. Hedgerows (灌木篱墙) either side will help guide bats and owls, while grass and trees will provide cover and food for other animals. Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy a peaceful and safe traffic-free route. Bridges, tunnels and rope crossings are popping up, showing that when people protect animals and their homes, everyone benefits. In some cities, tall tower blocks are being designed to help animals and humans live peacefully together. These green havens (保护区) have roofs covered in plants, built-in bird boxes, flower-filled balconies (露台) for pollinators (传粉昆虫), and even special spaces for bats to sleep during the day. In Milan, Italy, there are two of these amazing tower blocks, which are wrapped in over 800 trees, 5,000 shrubs and thousands of plants, helping wildlife flourish in the Italian city. You might not know it, but you are already helping wildlife to live with humans peacefully. Simple acts of kindness, like carefully tapping snail’s shell and lifting it to a nearby bush, or blowing a money spider from your hand to safety, all help create a better world for animals. From the tiniest bug to the largest beast, every little act helps us all share the planet peacefully. 1.According to the first Paragraph, why are the wildlife habitats getting smaller? (no more than 10 words) 2.How does the wildlife bridge help in Gloucestershire, England? List two examples mentioned in the passage. (no more than 25 words) 3.What does the underlined words “popping up” mean in English? (1 word) 4.According to the third Paragraph, what’s the purpose of designing tall tower blocks in some cities? (no more than 10 words) 5.What do you think of the ways of helping animals mentioned in the passage? Please explain in your own words. (no more than 25 words) Passage Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (捕食者) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest. Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else. Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don’t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them. Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. Chimpanzees are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimpanzees find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food. As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature”. But maybe you can’t trust her, either. 1.According to the passage, why do many animals behave dishonestly to fool others? (No more than 10 words) 2.How does a plover deal with it when a predator approaches its nest? (No more than 15 words) 3.Who often feed cuckoos’ baby birds? (No more than 3 words) 4.What does the underlined word “sneaky” in paragraph 5 mean? (Only 1 word) 5.What kind of animals mentioned in the passage do you like best? Why (No more than 20 words) Passage In January, some special artworks were shown at Lillian M. Jacobs School in Hull, Massachusetts The sculptures are made entirely of rubbish collected by sixth-graders! The school is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In February 2024, the students spent a cold day cleaning up a nearly 1-mile area of Nantasket Beach. They collected more than 40 bags of rubbish. “I often go to the beach and don’t notice the rubbish,” says Derek DeGallo, who is now a seventh-grader. “But when I looked for it, I realized how much there was.” Every year, billions of pounds of rubbish end up in oceans all over the world. The students found many things on the beach, from fishing lines to old shopping carts. Most of it is plastic. This waste makes beaches dirty and can hurt sea animals — many get stuck in the plastic or eat it by mistake, falling ill. After their beach cleanup, the students sorted the rubbish into groups like glass, plastic and foam and counted each piece of rubbish. They sent the data to the Center for Coastal Studies, an organization that helps protect the ocean near Massachusetts. Then, a local artist named Jackie Ranney and the school’s teachers helped the students turn the rubbish into sculptures of fish and other sea creatures, like whales and seahorses. The artworks show people how important it is to take care of the earth. “I hope kids see these artworks and think about how they use plastic,” says Ranney, the local artist. “They might ask themselves, ‘Do I throw away and recycle my rubbish in the right way?’” Derek, now a seventh-grader, feels proud that he and his classmates helped stop rubbish from getting into the ocean. “Our town’s beaches are wonderful,” he says. “We want to make sure they stay clean.” 1.Where did the students collect the rubbish? (no more than 5 words) 2.What harm does the rubbish cause to sea animals? (no more than 10 words) 3.What did the students do with the rubbish before making art? (no more than15 words) 4.What does the underlined word “creature” in Paragraph 6 mean? (One word) 5.What do you think about the students’ activities? Please explain. The shark came right up under him and sank its teeth into his lower leg. As Mike struggled to free himself. the shark bit harder, shaking him violently. Mike followed his instinct: he punched (拳打) the shark in the face, again and again (which happens to be what the experts recommend) until the shark released him. Swimming to shore, Mike noticed his lower right leg was gone. His friends quickly applied a tourniquet (止血带) using his board leash (皮带), which doctors later said likely saved his life. It was another day before the“fog” lifted, at which point Mike opened his eyes and realized he was in hospital - a below-the-knee amputee For the next few weeks while resting in bed, Mike spent time with his family, researched prosthetics (义肢) and considered the future. Once Mike was given the OK by his doctors, he did what many might consider unthinkable: He started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. But Mike was unshaken. Instead he was curious — why was he attacked? He remembered a fishy smell in the water that morning. Was that what attracted the shark? Mike’s curiosity led him to research sharks, and while he never figured out why he became a target, Mike did learn something that would change his life.·“Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around,” said Mike.“I watched a documentary called Sharkwater, and I learned about the demand for shark fin soup and the fact that 70 million sharks a. year are killed for their fins alone.” His unique situation as a shark survivor enabled him to give sharks a voice. He began working with the Hawaii state legislature (立法机构) to help pass a ban on shark-derived (鲨鱼衍生的) products. He partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and they headed to Washington to urge senators to create a nationwide bill protecting sharks. He was also selected to speak to the United Nations about the importance of shark sanctuaries (保护区). 1.How did Mike manage to get rid of the shark? (no more than 10 words) 2.Why did Mike return to the site where he had been attacked originally? (no more than 10 words) 3.What shocking fact did Mike learn about sharks? (no more than 20 words) 4.What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph? (no more than 3words) 5.What do you think of Mike? Please explain. (no more than 20 words) 【答案】1.Stopping 2.Little kids were having fun with pumpkins 3.The author doubted whether she was too old to play with balloons 4.Because the writer had a better understanding of youth on the day 5.Do something we like, no matter how old we are, because age should not hold us back. 由第一段中“Youth, something so great, is to be welcomed, and the fun you create should last forever, rather than coming to a halt due to others’ opinions.(青春是值得欢迎的,你创造的乐趣应该永远持续,而不是因为别人的看法coming to a halt)”可知,青春是值得欢迎的,你创造的乐趣应该永远持续,而不是因为别人的看法停止,coming to a halt意为“停止”,即Stopping。 2. 由第二段中“In the sea of pumpkins were many little children. Some were happily appreciating and picking up their favorite pumpkins; some were excitedly cutting pumpkins into the shapes they liked. This scene immediately attracted my eyes.(成片的南瓜堆旁聚着不少孩童,有的满心欢喜地观赏挑选心仪的南瓜,有的兴致勃勃地雕琢南瓜造型,这番景象瞬间吸引了我的目光)”可知,吸引作者的是孩子们开心地玩南瓜的场景。 3. 由第三段中“When stepping in, you would be surrounded by amazing, unique balloons. Almost every year I would play with the balloons, but this time something was holding me back. When I was watching the house, some voice inside my heart was telling me, “Now that you’re older, you shouldn’t do that.” I fought with that voice and begged my mother, “Can I go into the Pumpkin Balloon House?”(踏入屋内,各式各样别致精巧的气球便将人团团环绕。往年我总会在这里尽情玩耍,可这次却心生迟疑。望着气球屋,内心有个声音不断告诫自己:年纪大了,不该再玩这些了)”可知,作者内心纠结自己是否太大了不能玩气球。 4.考查推理判断。 由最后一段中“It was because on that day I understood youth was about being completely free, not caring about other people’s opinions of you, and never growing too old for fun.(正因那天我懂得,青春便是彻底随心自在,不在意他人看法,玩乐之心永远不会因年龄消逝)”可知,是因为作者那天对青春有了更深的理解。 5. Passage 2 I remember sitting in front of the TV as a child, watching American Idol. (no more than 20 words) 【答案】1.She wished she had a beautiful voice like theirs. 2.Her weak and small voice. 3.She strengthened it by imitating Amy Lee and practicing a lot. 4.She began to believe in her own ability. 5.She is persistent, because she never stops trying for her dream. 根据第一段“I loved hearing so many beautiful voices, and I always wished that mine sounded like their.(我喜欢听到那么多美妙的声音,而且我一直希望能自己的声音也能像他们的一样动听)”可知,作者看完《美国偶像》后希望自己能拥有像他们那样的美妙嗓音。 2. 根据第二段“I tried out for the play, only to realize how weak and small my voice was. I was disappointed.(我参加了这部剧的试演,结果却发现自己声音是那么微弱和无力。我感到很失望)”可知,作者在五年级参加这部剧的选拔后感到失望是因为她声音微弱且单薄。 3.考查细节理解。根据第三段“I spent countless hours singing to music like Fallen and The Open Door in my room. I modeled my own voice on Lee’s. I became passionate about finding my voice and spent my waking hours trying to find out how to sound better. I read article after article on how to get my voice improved, but none of them made a difference.(我花了无数时间在房间里伴着像《堕落》和《敞开的门》这样的歌曲唱歌。我模仿李的声音发音方式。我热衷于探寻自己的声音特质,并且在清醒的时间里努力摸索如何才能让自己的声音更好听。我一篇接一篇地阅读关于如何提升嗓音的文章,但没有一篇对我有帮助)”可知,作者通过模仿艾米·李并大量练习来增强自己的嗓音。 4.考查句意猜测。根据最后一段“I learned that the only thing holding me back was myself. My greatest realization was that I must open my mind before I could effectively use my instrument.(我了解到,阻碍我的唯一因素就是我自己。我最大的感悟是,要想有效地运用我的乐器,我必须先打开自己的思维)”可知,作者开始认识到唯一的阻碍就是自己,所以开始相信自己的能力了。故划线句意思是“她开始相信自己的能力了”。 5.考查开放题。根据“你觉得这位作者怎么样?请作解释”结合全文多次受挫仍坚持练习声乐可回答:她很执着,因为她从未停止为自己的梦想而努力。 Passage 3 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 When I was a teenager, I used to listen to heavy metal and hard rock music while studying. (no more than 20 words) 【答案】1.To silence the disturbing TV’s sounds. Or: Because it allowed him to block out the TV noise. 127.He started his minimalism adventure.   Or: He followed a minimalist lifestyle. Or: He decided to try minimalism. 128.Busy./ Occupied./ Engaged. 129.He lives a simple lifestyle where he has what he strictly needs. Or: He is living only with what he can carry with him. Or: He sticks to the principle of “Less Is More” and keeps things simple in life. 130.Yes. I think minimalism helps me focus on what is important and remove unnecessary burdens. Or: Yes. Because it simplifies life and reduces stress from too many belongings. No. I prefer a life with plenty of stuff so that I can enjoy a varied and colorful life. Or: No, because I find comfort and joy in having personal items around me. 由文章第一段中“It allowed me to silence the disturbing sounds of the TV in the living room of our small home.(它能让我隔绝小家里客厅里令人分心的电视噪音。)” To silence the disturbing TV’s sounds. He taught his son swimming and helped him live independently. My name is Matthew. Failure is a way to grow up. Passage 6 Curry Pizza Company, a pizza place in California, is offering customers a “Talk to Each Other Discount (折扣) ”. (no more than 25 words) 【答案】1.A working smartphone. 2.To encourage customers to talk to each other. 3.Encourage. 4.Because fewer than four people talk more naturally. 5.I think it’s meaningful because it encourages communication and helps the homeless. 根据第二段“Our goal is to encourage customers to stop using their phones while eating and talk to each other(我们的目标是鼓励顾客在吃饭时停止使用手机,互相交谈)”可知,餐厅提供折扣的目的是鼓励顾客互相交流。 3. 根据划线词所在句“After experiencing the benefits of a smartphone break, he wanted to stimulate others to try it as well.(在体验到暂时放下智能手机的好处后,他想stimulate其他人也尝试一下)”结合上下文,老板自己受益后希望他人也尝试,stimulate意为“鼓励、激励”。 4. 根据第四段“Malhi added that in order to be suitable for the “Talk to Each Other Discount”, groups must have at least four people, because when the number of customers is less than four, people talk to each other more naturally.(马利补充说,为了符合“相互交流折扣”的条件,团体人数必须至少达到四人,因为当顾客人数少于四人时,人们相互交流会更加自然)”可知,规定最低人数是因为少于四人时人们本就会更自然地交流。 5. Once upon a time, there was an old man in Basra whose only job was caring for and loving his only son. (no more than 25 words) 【答案】1.Spent. 2.To learn what cannot be taught. 3.He sent the young man to the mountains to herd sheep. 4.Because he had no one to talk to. 5.Yes, because it teaches humility and wisdom through experience, not just book knowledge. 根据第一段中的“The old man invested all his money in his son’s education. The young man was away for a few years and got an education at a well-known university.(这位老人把所有积蓄都invested到了儿子的教育中。 根据文章第二段中的““Go, my son and learn what cannot be taught,” said the old man.(“去吧,我的儿子,去学习那些不可教的东西,”老人说。)” 根据文章第三段中的““Go away to the mountains with these four hundred sheep and come back when they are one thousand,” said the master.(“带着这四百只羊到山里去,等它们变成一千只时再回来,”导师说。)” 根据文章第四段中的“He had no one to talk to. The sheep did not understand his language. In his desperation (绝望), he would talk to those sheep but they would look back at him as if to say he was stupid.(他找不到人说话。 Yes, because it teaches the value of humility and wisdom through life experience. 或者 No, because it's too harsh and lonely for most people to bear. I’ve loved to sew (缝) all my life. Why? (no more than 20 words) 【答案】1.The author’s love of sewing and upcycling. 2.Guilty. 3.Extra surprise. 4.She displays them on a bulletin board in her sewing room. 5.I would keep it as a reminder of the previous owner’s story. 根据第一段“I’ve loved to sew (缝) all my life. I started sewing clothes for my dolls when I was 7.(我一生都喜欢缝纫。我7岁时就开始给我的娃娃缝衣服了)”以及第二段的“In my late 20s, I began to buy used and vintage clothes to upcycle and refashion.(在我快30岁的时候,我开始购买二手和复古的衣服来升级和改造)”可知,这两段主要讲述作者对缝纫和改造二手衣物的热爱。 2. 根据第五段“Consider it a bonus if you find objects in the pockets.(如果你在口袋里找到东西,那就把它当作bonus)”可知,女儿说如果在口袋里找到东西,可以把它当作额外的惊喜,bonus在此意为“额外的收获/惊喜”。 4. 根据第六段“I decided to pay respect to this upcycling discovery — and the many others I’ve found over the years — by displaying them on a bulletin board in my sewing room.(我决定通过在我缝纫室的公告板上展示这些发现,来纪念这一升级回收的发现,以及多年来我发现的许多其他发现)”可知,作者把这些发现展示在缝纫室的布告板上。 5. Before Christmas last year I found a charity that was looking for workers to show care to the elderly. (no more than 25 words) 【答案】1.Agreed. 2.Elderly shut-ins who might not receive much attention. 3.To avoid any confusion about who he was. 4.Because he felt happy to cheer up strangers during the holidays. 5.The author’s story inspires me to help others by showing that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact. 根据第一段中“I wrote to the charity and asked if I could send gifts to some elderly people of their choosing, and some Christmas cards to more elderly shut-ins (不方便出门的人). The joy of knowing that I might have brightened someone’s day, even if just for a moment, was incredibly fulfilling. It reinforced the idea that small acts of kindness can have a big impact. I look forward to continuing this tradition and finding new ways to bring joy to those who need it most. The author’s story inspires me to help others by showing that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact. In 2015, Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old woman, became the first Chinese scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. 2. The world is becoming less livable because of climate change and the loss of nature. It can help young people understand the importance of trees, care more about nature, and take action to protect the environment. 由文章第一段中“The world is becoming less livable because of climate change and the loss of nature.(由于气候变化和自然环境的丧失,世界变得越来越不适宜居住。)” Because of climate change and the loss of nature. 2. 由文章第二段中“For years, experts have developed environmental education programs with the goal of helping people understand the natural environment and what we can do to protect it.(多年来,专家们开发了环境教育项目,目的是帮助人们了解自然环境以及我们可以做些什么来保护它。)” To help people understand the natural environment and what we can do to protect it. 3. 由文章第三段中“We also found that environmental education has meaningful effects on attitudes: Young people feel positive about the environment and motivated to protect it.(我们还发现,环境教育对态度有积极的影响:年轻人对环境持积极态度,并motivated保护环境。)” 由文章第四段中“They help young people know about, care about, and do things to protect the environment.(它们帮助年轻人了解、关心和做事情来保护环境。)” Helping young people know about, care about, and do things to protect the environment. 5. I can design a tree-planting activity. It can help young people understand the importance of trees, care more about nature, and take action to protect the environment.(开放性试题,回答合理即可。) As towns grow and humans use more land, wild spaces get smaller. (no more than 25 words) 【答案】1.Because towns grow and humans use more land. 2.①Hedgerows help guide bats and owls; ②Grass and trees provide cover and food for other animals; ③Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy a peaceful and safe traffic-free route. 3.Appearing/Emerging/Flourishing/Thriving. 4.To help animals and humans live peacefully together. 5.(Open.) e.g. I think they are very effective and helpful. They can help humans coexist peacefully with wildlife. 根据第一段中“As towns grow and humans use more land, wild spaces get smaller. Because towns grow and humans use more land. 2. 根据第二段中“Hedgerows (灌木篱墙) either side will help guide bats and owls, while grass and trees will provide cover and food for other animals. Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy a peaceful and safe traffic-free route. 故答案可为:①Hedgerows help guide bats and owls; ②Grass and trees provide cover and food for other animals; ③Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy a peaceful and safe traffic-free route. 3. 故答案可为:Appearing/Emerging/Flourishing/Thriving. 4. 根据第三段中“In some cities, tall tower blocks are being designed to help animals and humans live peacefully together. I think they are very effective and helpful. They can help humans coexist peacefully with wildlife. Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. Why (No more than 20 words) 【答案】1.Because dishonesty often helps them survive. 2.It pretends to have a broken wing and leads the predator away. 3.Their adoptive parents. 4.Dishonest. 5. I like scrub jays best. They are clever to hide food from thieves. 根据第一段“Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Because dishonesty often helps them survive. 2. 根据第二段“When a predator (捕食者) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing.(当捕食者靠近它的巢穴时,鸻会把捕食者引离巢穴。 It pretends to have a broken wing and leads the predator away. 3. 根据第四段“When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.(当雏鸟孵化出来后,它们的养鸟父母会喂养它们。)” 故答案为Their adoptive parents. 4. 根据第五段“After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.(打架后,输的黑猩猩会向对方伸出手。 I like scrub jays best. They are clever to hide food from thieves. In January, some special artworks were shown at Lillian M. (no more than 20 words) 【答案】1.Nantasket Beach. 2.They get stuck in the plastic or eat it. 3.They sorted the rubbish and counted each piece of it. 4.Animals. 5.Meaningful. Because they help stop rubbish from getting into the ocean. 根据第二段“In February 2024, the students spent a cold day cleaning up a nearly 1-mile area of Nantasket Beach. They collected more than 40 bags of rubbish.(2024年2月,学生们花了一个寒冷的日子清理了近1英里长的楠塔基特海滩。 根据第四段“This waste makes beaches dirty and can hurt sea animals—many get stuck in the plastic or eat it by mistake, falling ill.(这种废物使海滩变脏,并可能伤害海洋动物——许多动物被困在塑料中或误食塑料,生病了。)” They get stuck in the plastic or eat it。 3. 根据第五段“After their beach cleanup, the students sorted the rubbish into groups like glass, plastic and foam and counted each piece of rubbish.(在清理海滩后,学生们将垃圾分类为玻璃、塑料和泡沫等组,并数了每一块垃圾。)” They sorted the rubbish and counted each piece of it。 4. 根据第六段“Then, a local artist named Jackie Ranney and the school’s teachers helped the students turn the rubbish into sculptures of fish and other sea creatures, like whales and seahorses.(然后,一位名叫杰基·兰尼的当地艺术家和学校的老师帮助学生将垃圾变成了鱼和其他海洋_____的雕塑,比如鲸鱼和海马。)” 根据倒数第二段“Derek, now a seventh-grader, feels proud that he and his classmates helped stop rubbish from getting into the ocean.(现在上七年级的德里克为自己和同学们阻止垃圾进入海洋而感到自豪。)” Meaningful. Because they help stop rubbish from getting into the ocean。 In late October 1997, on a typical fall morning, Mike was attacked by a tiger shark near his home on the island of Kauai while surfing with friends. (no more than 25 words) 【答案】1.By punching the shark in the face again and again./He punched the shark in the face repeatedly. 2.Because he was curious about why he was attacked. /Because he was curious about the reason for being attacked. 3.Humans kill 70 million sharks yearly for their fins, making humans far more dangerous to sharks./He learned the fact that humans are far more dangerous to sharks by killing them for their fins. 4.Collaborated/Cooperated. 5.1. Open/He is caring. 2. He showed empathy to sharks despite being attacked./He is a brave person. Because he saved himself from a dangerous shark attack and started to ride waves again. 根据文章第一段“Mike followed his instinct: he punched (拳打) the shark in the face, again and again (which happens to be what the experts recommend) until the shark released him.(迈克凭借本能:他一次又一次地击打鲨鱼的脸(这恰好是专家们的建议),直到鲨鱼放开他。)” By punching the shark in the face again and again./He punched the shark in the face repeatedly. 2. 根据文章第三段“But Mike was unshaken. Instead he was curious — why was he attacked? He remembered a fishy smell in the water that morning. Was that what attracted the shark?(但迈克没有动摇。 Because he was curious about why he was attacked./Because he was curious about the reason for being attacked. 3. 根据文章第四段“‘Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around,’ said Mike. ‘I watched a documentary called Sharkwater, and I learned about the demand for shark fin soup and the fact that 70 million sharks a year are killed for their fins alone.’(“人类对鲨鱼的危害远比对鲨鱼对人类的危害要大,”迈克说。“我看了一部名为《鲨鱼水域》的纪录片,我了解到了对鱼翅汤的需求,以及每年有7000万只鲨鱼仅因为它们的鳍就被杀死的事实。”)”可知,迈克了解到的关于鲨鱼的令人震惊的事实是人类每年因为鱼翅而杀死7000万只鲨鱼,这使得人类对鲨鱼的危害比对鲨鱼对人类的危害要大,故答案为Humans kill 70 million sharks yearly for their fins, making humans far more dangerous to sharks./He learned the fact that humans are far more dangerous to sharks by killing them for their fins. 4. 划线词前面的句子“He began working with the Hawaii state legislature (立法机构) to help pass a ban on shark-derived (鲨鱼衍生的) products. 以及划线词所在句“He partnered with other like-minded shark attack survivors and marine biologists, and they headed to Washington to urge senators to create a nationwide bill protecting sharks.(他与其他志同道合的鲨鱼袭击幸存者和海洋生物学家……,他们前往华盛顿敦促参议员制定一项全国性的保护鲨鱼的法案。)” 划线单词“partnered”意为“合作”,相当于“collaborated/cooperated”,故答案为Collaborated/Cooperated. 5. 通读全文,结合最后一段“His unique situation as a shark survivor enabled him to give sharks a voice. He was also selected to speak to the United Nations about the importance of shark sanctuaries 可知,迈克尽管被鲨鱼袭击,但他对鲨鱼表示同情,开始为鲨鱼发声,由此可知他是一个富有同情心的人;结合第一段“Swimming to shore, Mike noticed his lower right leg was gone. His friends quickly applied a tourniquet (止血带) using his board leash (皮带), which doctors later said likely saved his life.(游到岸边时,迈克发现自己的右腿不见了。 和第三段“Once Mike was given the OK by his doctors, he did what many might consider unthinkable: He started riding the waves again.(一旦医生同意,迈克就做了许多人认为不可能的事情:他又开始冲浪了。)” 1. Open/He is caring. 2. He showed empathy to sharks despite being attacked./He is a brave person. Because he saved himself from a dangerous shark attack and started to ride waves again.
