Amy Lee made a surprising choice a year ago—she chose to be a car mechanic.
From a young age, Amy has loved playing with cars. She’s always interested in taking them apart. It is fun to see how they work. So it is an easy decision for her. In many people’s eyes, this is an unusual choice for girls. The work may make them dirty and tired, which is a challenge. At first her parents were unhappy with that. They would rather Amy worked for the family business. People love the bread and cakes their family make. But Amy didn’t want to join the trade.
Amy did lots of research into the job. She also worked as a part-time mechanic for a couple of months. Her parents talked to her boss. They knew she was serious. They understood her love for the work, so they decided to support her.
Now Amy has been in the car mechanic school for a year. “Do you find studying car repair difficult?” Many people ask Amy. And her answer is: “Yes and no. On one hand, I have to use computers and operate other high-tech machines. I have to learn a lot about physics and chemistry. On the other hand, I find the subjects interesting. It’s worth the effort.”
Recently Amy won first prize in a car repair competition. She was the first woman to enter the competition and win! “Luckily, the prize proves my choice wasn’t made in a rush. We should always follow our love and dreams, even if they seem unusual. Live life to the full and never regret it!” Amy said with a smile.
1.What is Amy Lee’s future job?
A.Designing cars. B.Repairing cars. C.Selling cars. D.Decorating cars.
2.What does the underlined phrase “the trade” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The family business. B.The unusual choice.
C.Lots of research. D.The discussion.
3.What does Amy think of her subjects like physics and chemistry?
A.Easy and interesting. B.Easy but boring.
C.Hard but interesting. D.Hard and boring.
4.What does Amy’s story make us believe?
A.Never burn the candle at both ends.
B.Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Do you enjoy playing video games? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to design them for a living? Today, let’s talk about Mitu Khandaker’s cool job. Mitu Khandaker is a game developer, someone who codes (编程序) and designs games. And she also teaches games.
Being a game developer is like wearing a lot of different hats at once. One minute, she might be fixing some code. Another minute, she might be solving a design problem, or creating art. The other part of the job is working with people. It’s very collaborative (合作的).
The best game designers are people who have a wide range of interests, because you want to bring those into games. So yes, you might love playing games. But you might also be someone who loves painting or writing stories, or making music, or even just listening to music. For example, Mitu Khandaker loves listening to hip-hop. Whatever your interests are, there is a space for that in games to tell these amazing new stories.
If you want to be a game designer, Mitu Khandaker would say follow your passion and believe in yourself. If you like writing stories, or you like drawing or painting or designing board games—whatever it is—there is a place for you in games. Don’t take no for an answer. That’s how she got to where she is.

For a long time, many parents told their children to get jobs in science and technology. They thought these jobs were safe and had a bright future. But now, some parents are changing their minds. They are starting to think that jobs in the humanities, arts or skilled trades like electricians (电工) might be better.
One major reason is the quick growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI can now do many tasks related to technology. This makes people worry that soon, there could be too many workers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Between 2011 and 2024, the number of university students in computer science grew a lot, increasing by nearly three times. So, is focusing only on tech still the best plan?
A man named Dan Dumont, who is an engineering director, thought about this for his own kids. He even asked an AI for advice. The AI’s answer surprised him. It said that building creativity and people skills is more important than just focusing on technology. This made Dumont think that skilled jobs, like being an electrician, might be safer because AI cannot easily replace them.
Schools that teach hands-on job skills are becoming more popular. For example, in Massachusetts, one in every five students now chooses this kind of school. Some of these schools are so full that students have to wait to get in. Also, regular schools are starting to offer classes again where students can learn to build and fix things, like in wood shop. These schools are popular because they mix basic school subjects with hands-on training. This prepares students for both university and a job right after school, giving them more choices. Parents like this idea. It helps their kids get ready for a future where technology changes quickly, making sure they can adapt no matter what happens.
1.According to the first paragraph, parents are starting to think that jobs in ________ might be better.
A.only science and technology fields B.the humanities, arts or skilled trades
C.developing AI technologies D.traditional school teaching
2.How did the number of university students studying computer science change between 2011 and 2024?
A.It decreased slightly over the years. B.It remained almost the same level.
C.It grew greatly to nearly three times. D.It changed quickly due to new rules.
3.According to the text, why are some schools that teach hands-on job skills becoming more popular?
A.They mix school subjects with practical skills training.
B.They focus only on preparing students for university studies.
C.They mainly help students avoid working with technology.
D.They are easier to get into than regular schools.
4.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Why AI is Making All Jobs Disappear B.The Problems with Today’s Schools
C.New Ideas About Choosing a Future Job D.Why Students Should Only Study Science
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.C

When all this was happening, the store owner observed and listened with great interest to the conversation that followed:
“Madam, I am a poor boy. Can you give me a job cutting grass on your lawn (草坪)?” the little boy asked.
“Sorry, I already have someone to cut my lawn,” the woman at the other end of the phone line replied.

Instead of getting angry, the little boy smiled and put back the receiver gently.

For young people who grow up in villages, a job in the city sounds good. But Ning Fenfang, 34, left the big city to be a farmer.
In 2017, she left her job in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and went back to her hometown of Cili County in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. At that time, much of the farmland there was deserted. Seeing this, Ning decided to be a farmer. She started with growing rice and oilseed rape (油菜) in 2020. She rented the land and hired villagers to work it.
Ning now farms more than 66.7 hectares of land. More than 300 housewives have worked part-time on her land, each making more than 10,000 yuan per year.
“It’s never easy,” said Ning. At first, many people didn’t understand her decision. Farming is often seen as an “unsuitable” job for both the post-90s generation and women in general. Also, she lacked enough farming knowledge. However, Ning loved farming.
“When you’re tired, you can stop and rest and do what you want to do. Every day, you can embrace nature, which is the poetry and far afield (诗和远方) that many people hope for,” Ning told the People’s Courts News and Communication Agency.
Ning has tried to turn farming into a “fashionable” job. Rather than depending on farmers, she advises mechanized (机械化) farming, which means using high-tech machines. She also plans to provide children living in cities with a chance to experience farming.

Since the start of robots, many people have been afraid that robots would take the place of humans in some fields. Now, some scientists say AI robots really are coming for some jobs. A March 2023 report said that AI could do a quarter of all the work that humans could do. In Europe and America, 300 million people may lose jobs because of AI.
But it’s not all bad news. Scientists have pointed out that there are still jobs that AI can’t do. People who get these kinds of jobs have less risk of losing work.
The first would be jobs that are really creative: you need to come up with new ideas and build something new. For example, in science, people whose job is coming up with new ideas may keep their jobs.
The second is jobs with important interpersonal relationships. Doctors and reporters are some of them. These are jobs where you need a very deep understanding of people. It will be a long time before AI has the ability to build relationships with human beings.
The third is jobs that really need lots of ability to solve problems, like welders (焊工). These are the kinds of jobs where you’re dealing with a new situation all the time. They are probably the hardest of anything to be taken place of.
In short, finding a job that needs adapting (适应) to the changing situations is a good way to avoid losing jobs.
1.Who may lose the job easily according to the text?
A.A driver. B.A doctor. C.A reporter. D.A scientist.
2.What does the underlined word “They” refer to?
A.Jobs with important interpersonal relationships.
B.Jobs that are really creative and enjoyable.
C.Jobs that really need lots of ability to solve problems.
D.Jobs that you can do over and over again.
3.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Reasons that AI will develop quickly.
B.Jobs that need ability to solve problems.
C.Jobs that AI won’t take the place of.
D.Ways that we can use to avoid losing jobs.

What do you want to be when you grow up? My answer has always been a vet.
We didn’t have pets growing up because my mother was scared of animals. She transferred (转移) some of this fear to me. It’s not common you find someone who’s scared of animals but wants to be a vet. Still, I knew this is what I wanted.
Vet school was nothing like I had imagined. Within the first few weeks, any fears I had about being a vet vanished. In the fourth year, we were introduced to surgery. I loved it. Stitching (缝) wounds was like a satisfying game of Tetris (俄罗斯方块), where all the pieces fit beautifully together to make something broken whole again. It solidified (使坚固) my belief that this was the right fit for me.
These were the most challenging and rewarding two years of my life, and before I knew it, they were over. I was officially a veterinary surgeon (兽医). Surprisingly, I felt empty after I finished. Why wasn’t I excited to move on? I had completely forgotten to think about what comes next. I felt as if I had spent the last decade of my life writing exams and working crazy hours only to come out on the other side, completely clueless.
There were so many options to choose from. I could start a clinic, work at another practice or even pursue further studies. It was my father who suggested I travel to gain some perspective. I hesitantly decided to spend some time in New Zealand with my aunt who also happens to be a vet.
New Zealand was beautiful! I finally had a chance to think about what I wanted. One of the vets there allowed me to observe their practice. Working with vet nurses really stood out for me. We don’t have vet nurses in India! It is a blessing to have such experienced and dedicated individuals as a part of your support system. After a whole year of what felt like aimless wandering, this experience helped me decide I wanted to work overseas.
So, to all the other confused vets out there who haven’t figured things out: It’s completely okay to feel confused! Most people feel the same way at some point in their careers. Don’t be afraid to try new things even if you feel difficult or impossible.

2.What does the underlined word “vanished” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Erupted. B.Disappeared. C.Increased. D.Realized.
3.How did the author feel after she graduated as a real vet?
A.Lost. B.Ashamed. C.Confident. D.Excited.
4.What does the text mainly tell us?

I studied design in the UK, and now I’m working in London as a food designer. (Li Leyu, 28)
Sun: What do food designers do?
Li: For us food designers, food is not only something for people to eat. It is also a special way of telling warm and meaningful stories to the public. Sometimes we make creative art installations (艺术装置)with all kinds of fresh food materials. Besides this, we may also design unique dining experiences for customers and even take charge of building and managing local food brands.
Sun: What are the differences between a food designer and a cook?
Li: Cooks mainly focus on the taste of food. They care about making food delicious. Food designers may also cook, but they think more about the ideas and experiences around food. So, cooks and food designers often work together.
Sun: What food design projects have you worked on?
Li: People often say home is where their roots are, so I used many kinds of root vegetables, like carrots and lotus roots. We cooked them in different ways and shaped them like a sculpture. Visitors could both look at and taste the design! I also worked on a project about lab-grown meat to encourage more people to discuss this new, eco-friendly food.
Sun: What skills should food designers have?

Amy Lee made a surprising choice a year ago—she chose to be a car mechanic.

A.Jobs with important interpersonal relationships.
B.Jobs that are really creative and enjoyable.
