B
(During the last bus trip, “I” paid for a boy who had no money with him.)
Two weeks later, it’s raining heavily flooding the town.
By the time the bus stops, my black hair is like a wet cloth on my face. I stand at the fare (车费) box, reaching deep in to my pockets for my plastic bag of change.
It’s empty.
Only then do I remember Amelia and I spent it all seeing the matinee. For the movie and popcorn and soda. I forgot to save some for the bus.
Bus riders’ eyes narrow at my empty hand. Someone snorts (冷哼). Someone shakes her head and mutters (咕哝).
I look at the driver helplessly, at his sharp eyes under his thick, bushy brown eyebrows.
“I can’t pay,” I whisper.
His voice is surprisingly soft and full. You already did.
I stand still, doubting my ears.
His hand lifts. He pushes a button, and the fare machine beeps, a beep that says the fare for a child has been paid.
The smallest but warmest smile in the world spreads on his face. He nods to show I should sit down.
Again, I hear a disapproving mutter behind me. Till that time, I notice the sign that says what things aren’t allowed on the bus.
No spitting.
No eating or drinking.
No playing music.
No free rides.
I look at the back of the driver’s head as I realize that two weeks ago he broke the rules by letting the boy ride without paying. Maybe an angry bus rider could have complained (抱怨) to his boss. Maybe he could have gotten into trouble. But he still did it.
A similar small but heartfelt and grateful smile spreads on my own lips.
From now on, I’m always going to carry two fares worth of money in my pocket.
16. When hearing the driver’s words You already did, the writer possibly feels _________.
A. moved B. surprised C. worried D. uncomfortable
17. What does the underlined word disapproving mean in this story?
A. Satisfying. B. Funny. C. Unhappy. D. Worrying.
18. Why is the writer going to carry two fares worth of money in her pocket?
A. Because she hopes to pass on the kindness she received.
B. Because she decides to pay the driver back for what he did.
C. Because she plans to keep the rest of the money for movies.
D. Because she wants to avoid being unable to take a bus again.
19. What can we learn from the story?
A. The driver got into trouble for letting the boy ride free.
B. The writer isn’t the only kid who is helped by the driver.
C. The driver let the boy ride free because of the heavy rain.
D. The writer is a close friend of the boy on the last bus trip.
20. Which is the best title for this story?
A. A Bus Driver B. A Free Ride C. A Heavy Rain D. A Kind Heart
【答案】16. B 17. C 18. A 19. B 20. B
文章开头提到“During the last bus trip, ‘I’ paid for a boy...”,结尾又提到司机两周前让那个男孩免费乘车。
C
① On TikTok, more and more Westerners are “becoming Chinese.” They practice qigong, drink hot water in the morning, eat rice or congee for breakfast, or learn Putonghua on Duolingo, a language-learning app. Some follow Chinese daily routines: early to bed, early to rise. Some listen to Chinese opera in their spare time. Some even post videos saying, “You met me in a very Chinese moment of my life.” This “Chinamaxxing” trend (趋势) has become hugely popular among Western young people.
② So why does it happen? This is connected with the fast rise of Chinese culture and soft power. As China gets more international influence, topics about China naturally appear on main online websites. Many Westerners know little about China, so they have grown more curious about this unknown country.
③ People have different opinions, though. Is “Chinamaxxing” real respect for Chinese culture, or just a fun copy? Some people say it is better than no interest at all. At least it makes Chinese culture more well-known and shows that people want to learn about it. Even if it does not bring big changes right away, it can help build better shared cultural understanding later on.
④ Other people disagree. They say many popular online jokes and posts show Chinese life in a simplified or one-sided way. There is a big difference between polite cultural exchange and copying a culture without real understanding. This sudden interest has also made many overseas Chinese feel uncomfortable. Many grew up experiencing unhappy moments in Western communities. Now that parts of their culture have become popular just for fun, they feel their identity (身份) is being turned into a joke.
⑤ It is good to see closer connections between Chinese culture and the rest of the world. But how long will “Chinamaxxing” last? No one can know. Online trends are often short-lived and fragmented (碎片化的), so they may not change public views in the long run. Still, if people around the world truly enjoy Chinese culture in their own way, it is a positive step toward breaking old images that Westerners had of China.
21. What do some Westerners do to “become Chinese” according to the passage?
A. They learn qigong on Duolingo.
B. They drink hot water and eat rice.
C. They post videos to teach Putonghua.
D. They rise early to listen to Chinese opera.
22. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ______.
What’s more, small parts of daily Chinese life are more attractive and easier to copy, instead of great stories about national power.
A. Paragraph ① B. Paragraph ② C. Paragraph ③ D. Paragraph ④
23. What is the writer’s opinion on this cultural trend?
A. It will change Westerners’ views of China.
B. It makes Chinese people feel uncomfortable.
C. It is a positive step although may not last long.
D. It shows Westerners’ real respect for Chinese culture.
24. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. ① / ②③ / ④⑤ B. ①② / ③ / ④⑤
C. ① / ② / ③④ / ⑤ D. ① / ②③④ / ⑤
25. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To share different opinions on this cultural trend.
B. To tell the reasons for the popularity of this trend.
C. To show the spread of Chinese culture through this trend.
D. To describe the influence of this trend on Westerners’ views.
【答案】21. B 22. B 23. C 24. C 25. A

Recently, Dear You, also known as A Love Letter to Ama, has become the biggest surprise in Chinese cinema. With no stars and conversations almost totally in the local Chaoshan dialect, the film still achieved 9.1 out of 10 on Douban, a popular film review website in China.
The story happened in the last century when many people from southern China left their homes and travelled to Southeast Asia in search of work and chances. This journey became known as xia nanyang in Chinese. There, they worked as traders, labourers, cooks, and shopkeepers. Zheng Musheng, Ama’s husband, was one of these people.
In 1948, Zheng Musheng left his beloved wife Ye Shurou (Ama) behind and travelled to Thailand to make a living. Separated by endless oceans and great distance (距离), the couple could only communicate with each other through Qiaopi, which are special letters together with money.
Many years later, their grandson Xiaowei went to Thailand hoping to find his grandfather. However, he gradually uncovered a secret hidden for many years. In fact, Zheng Musheng had already passed away a long time before. Being grateful to Musheng’s past kindness, a Chaoshan woman Xie Nanzhi kept writing warm letters and sending money to Shurou secretly. She pretended to be Musheng for almost twenty years. She secretly supported two families on her own and protected the old lady’s lifelong wish for her husband’s safe return.
The director Lan Hongchun said the film is not just “a love letter to Ama” but “a love letter to all overseas Chinese and to our homeland”. By mixing a love story with a sense of homeland, the film shows that Chaoshan people’s hard work, honesty, and love for their country are qualities that can move anyone’s heart.
